Broadband companies offer clarity on connection slowing

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12730440

The UK's biggest broadband providers are to give clearer information about how they slow down users' connections to maintain their network performance.

BT, Virgin Media and Sky are among the companies that will publish details of their "traffic management" policies.

The firms say they want to help customers understand why they need to vary connection speeds.

Critics claim the practice will lead to a two-tier internet where some services pay for faster access to their sites.

LIKE - file-sharers shouldn't be holding us those of us who don't use 100000TB of bandwidth per second!

People who watch youtube and use iplayer use just as much badwidth, whether the files are legit or not make no difference to the amount of BW used. And if your paying for that connection, are you not allowed to use it? wtf

It's like saying "We have to restrict you because it's your fault for using it."

I'm with BT, unfortunately no Infinity and only 6.5meg download :(

Checking their rollout plan it doesn't even look like they are planning on our exchange anytime soon either! :(

Theres a reason I have Sky Broadband Unlimited.

I download loads of MSDN stuff, and development stuff for work, as well as using all day 5 days a week for calls, email, support and a cap wouldn't work for me.

2GB of Data would last me no time at all.

My thoughts is, if you want unlimited....pay for it.

is sky Broadband Unlimited though or is there FUP?

Yeah - when you check all there online meters - it almost says 'your unlimited so we don't record you' - I guess If you went really mad someone would have a word!!

about time
i downloaded 3 drivers in 1 day and my speed went from this
http://speedtest.net/result/1178145323.png (http://speedtest.net/result/1178145323.png)
to this
http://speedtest.net/result/1205678248.png
and when i phoned BT up they said i was considered a "heavy user"

it is beyond a joke tbh
to the people of above saying they are going to BT dont
they are ****, a bunch of ants could be a better ISP than them
and the unlimited FUP only applies to their high-end infinity package nothing else
their 20meg unlimited one still has 100GB FUP (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1205678248.png)

random hyperlink^^ not sure how that happened

Sky slams Virgin's 'broadband con' ads

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/digitaltv/news/a311010/sky-slams-virgins-broadband-con-ads.html

Sky has launched a legal challenge against Virgin Media's "broadband honesty" advertising campaign, arguing that the ads are "grossly misleading".

Lawyers representing the satellite broadcaster have called on the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to run an investigation of Virgin's "Stop the Broadband Con" online ad campaign.

Any ISP's that perform traffic shaping should be included in the investigation. Including Virgin :p

BeThere broadband have no limits... Or throttling... You can download TBs of data every month without worrying about some crappy FUP :thumb:

The problem with the ISP's is that they like to proxy stuff. That allows them to sell more bandwidth than they can provide. Also remember... ISP's bandwidth promise goes as far as their network does...and a lot of people tend to forget that.

I'm with Virgin Media (cabled) and stream a lot of HD content on iPlayer/YouTube as well as that I stream all my music (Spotify) and do a lot of video conferences for work.

I normally get capped around 2pm and is really really starting to annoy me as the capped speeds make HD content buffer a lot.

Seriously thinking of switching because of it.

i thought virgin media have always been open about thier "fair usage policy", it has its own webpage etc.

but it does suck, if i buy a game from steam like i did for homefront the other day, i cant download it during the day without hitting the limit, then my speed gets cut by 75%, Great!

I'm with TalkTalk and was totally fine until the past few days when my speeds went from:

to this:

Yes I download a lot, but it is an unlimited package that I get, so I am defo not happy at all about this. It's taking about 20 mins just to load a youtube video at the moment...

All you guys who get hit with speed limits after downloading what your ISP considers too much need to switch to O2 or BeThere ;)

Really miss Be tbh.

Liking BT Infinity so far though, I get full speed on it, stuff comes down from Usenet at 4.55MB per sec. Cannot complain.

FUP is being dropped this month for option 2 users.

I don't care about P2P shaping on torrents, I don't use them. Infact I have no idea why anyone still uses them.
