I had a lot of fun fixing up one of these a couple of years ago!

http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/3620/viakt400a600pl7.jpg

That's a 4-y-o Via KT400(A)/600 chipset made by Matsonic with typical VIA 3 RAM slots. Athlon 2400+ (166 GHz X11) and 6200 AGP graphics, apparently compatible on 3.3V (AGP2X) and 1.5V (AGP8X) according to the two keys on card and motherboard slot. Rumbling/Blue Screening HD is an IBM "Deathstar" which was still made in Portsmouth North Harbour as recently as 5 years ago. Added newer 40GB Seagate boot drive. Power supply was a filthy dirty FSP 300W 12A with a fan set up to blow air down on the motherboard. Most strange. Replaced it with a FSP 350W 14A for good measure and put a 80mm casefan down on the right in that box. Gave everything a careful brush and hoovering and wipe with a damp cloth.

Memory was shot and giving errors in memtest86+ and freezes. Replaced with working OCZ Platinum. VIA KT400 chipsets are really picky on memory and I found out why. Default motherboard speed on original DDR400 3-3-3-8 Elixir memory was an unlikely 233 MHz at 2.5-2-2-6. Setting manually in bios to 200 MHz and fast OCZ SPD of 2-3-2-5 got everything running OK. All drives now running CS jumpering on UDMA ribbons.

It's actually a quite serviceable PC and will run Doom3, if you like that sort of thing. :)

Going back 3 years, just dug up another fixed VIA KT400 from the system7 annals:

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/7811/ecsl7vtafixedjz1.jpg

When my friend Jeremy told me his PC had a bit of a virus problem, doubtless from following all those spam Pron links in this forum, and wouldn't boot, I naturally offered to have a look. Big mistake. It was the lost weekend for me... :(

This is a 3yo ******** ECS L7VTA Athlon 1800+ photographed after I cleaned it. It was completely encrusted in brown tar from smoking, and full of fluff.

Here's how it panned out:
Scratched Windows XP and Drivers disks. Unusable.
Dismantled and cleaned CPU heatsink and fan, added voltage reduction cable to quieten it.
Intake fan grinding, and graphics fan failed.
Replaced flaky Maxtor 80GB HD, reading at 20% of normal speed.
Failed LAN chip. Ran internet off USB.
Both Opticals hardly able to open for grime.
Floppy needed hoovering.
Cleaned power supply.
Reinstalled Windows after disabling LAN in bios and created ghost cloned backup partition.

Otherwise, I was quite impressed, especially with the power supply and cooling. Anyway, it's running fine now. :)

LOL!

well system7 has one of these 'long time' members from NT and the forum was his baby, she obv he did whatever he wanted, it was a much kinder time, he was always there and people just accepted that and didn't think of it in any other way.

Here, he'll just get trampled if he's not careful however he does have a wealth of knowing of of 775 socket irrc.

I can view them just fine, and OP is Original Post (The post that starts the thread). I wish I'd gone back and done a older build too, that was all I had knowledge of from when I was young but decided to make my first real build pretty top of the line ish.. There's always time I suppose :D

Best of luck on your build Dominic, look forward to seeing how you get on.

The unknown plate is a joystick/game port. Normally connects to the sound card. This port was also used with the correct cable for MIDI.

You don't really need it unless you have something to plug into it.

you have 2 different types of RAM there - only sticks 1,2 and 4 can be used... notice the "notches" in the bottom of the sticks.

Otherwise, good luck :thumb:

Good luck mate, although I couldn't help but notice that you don't have a PSU (power supply unit) in any of your pictures?

Enjoy it mate, I recently learnt how to take and put back together computers by a similar method, dis and reassembly ! :

EDIT: and presumably you have a processor not pictured aswell.

its the perfect way to start on pc's.

in fact this is what we do at college start with the older kit just to know the basics then go up a level.

only thing you wont learn by your self is how to dispose of electronic waste and data protection and all of that.

Don't do what 75% of the buyers of this kit does, that is get any old crap job just to pay for new PC hardware so you can sit on your hide and play games and cause the odd nerdstorm when you upgrade.

Not talking from experience, honest.

I did tech support for years and worked for some gawd awful companies. The final straw was working nights in a call centre, explaining DOS commands to poor folks trying to repair botched recovery partitions on nasty Packard Bell machines. EVIL EVIL EVIL job.

Hi,

Just tried to build the computer with a friend using a new motherboard and guess what happened. I pressed the power button and.... ........ IT TURNS ON!!!!!

It now has Ubuntu (latest version) running on it perfectly. Now that I know I can build my own computer for the future

Thanks

Awesome, it's a good feeling isn't it? :)

I started when I was fifteen (only a year and a half ago) and I jumped in the deep end and bought £1,000 worth of stuff, didn't have any confidence when I started building it, but luckily everything went my way and I only made a few mistakes lol. As soon as you turn 16, get a part-time job to fuel your inevitable addiction to upgrading :D.
