Hi all, just wondering if I'm intending on using 4gb of ram, am I better with 4 sticks of 1gb or 2 sticks of 2gb?

4 Sticks of 1Gb for better timings and for the dual channel x2. More sticks do limit overclocking in some cases to bear that in mind, if you overclock 2x2gb is best.

i'd go for 2 x2gb it leaves more scope for upgrading

Ok, it's just that 2*2gb of patriot ram is £70, whereas 4*1gb would cost £60.
I know it would only be saving £10, but it's senseless spending money you don't have to. Cheers for your help guys.

Well say that I had no intention of overclocking, and 4gb would be all I was using for quite a while, would I be better off going for 4*1gb in that case?

Long term for the sake of a tenner and performance I would still go 2x 2gb

there are reasons to go either way, i went 2x2 so i could add more if needed but i will most likly be on ddr3 before that happens.

the only downside to 2gb sticks is they dont tend to clock as high as 1gb ones.

with all 4 dimms full tho you do often need to reduce the timings to lessen the stress on the memory controller.
