22 ASWELL, HAD MY PINK CARD FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS NOW.
I WAS GETING QUOTES AROUND 2000/2200 NOTHING AS MUCH AS THAT THO.
TESCO SEEMS A SURE BET FOR PRICE THO :)
I just couldnt imagine paying out more in insurance than the car is worth - and a 15 year old Clio must be worth a couple of hundred!!
I know this is the norm for new drivers now but the most I have ever paid in insurance is a tad over £800 and that was for my Nova and was whilst living in Nottingham (8/9 years ago).

Well, I guess even the roughest banger is still capable of writing off all the other shiny cars on the road ;).

I know, but theres no need to keep shouting about it :)
Can you find out what TPFT is as your excess is likely to be as much as if not more than the value of the car, so it might be better to go that route.

Sounds about right. Ive just had a quote of £1800 on a bmw 325i with an sp50 endorsement on my license but 0 points. Last year the insurance on the same car was £900 a year, i know the sp50 isnt helping my cause but it seems the insurance rates are through the roof right now.
At this rate i'll be forced to insure the fiat seicento in my driveway :o
The worst one I had was when I was quoted over £14500 (thats £14.5k - not a typo!) to be insured on a 1.1 - don't remember what the actual car that I was looking was, but I definitely remember the price! That was when I was 25! In the same set of quotes, the best price I got was £400. Some places just dont want your business!
The funny thing is they all use the same under writer so the only thing that changes is the amount of profit they make out of you
go through topcashback / quidco to get x % off price, or £x off price.
Just got £85 back from topcashback for my Aviva policy
Insurance seems so random tbh. My father-in-law had a crash recently, his car was written off.
Today he recieved two letters from his insurance company. One said he would get nothing at all, the other said he'd get £1000.
Guess which one he's going to reply to :P.
what's price of 3rd party?

lols.
At 21 I paid £800 on a e36 328i (2.8 200bhp RWD) :D
At 23 I paid £550 on a e36 318iS (1.9 140bhp RWD) :D
At 24 insurance on the 318iS will be about the same if not more as everyone's insurance is just stupid this year. :(
Admiral direct are a very good company, look for midrange cars, small engine golfs, or kias are cheap.
another tip is to put one of your parents as other user of the car (under their own policy) this brought mine down by £200!

Has anyone seen the EU ruling on insurance thats happened today though? Apparently, to keep things fair, women must now be charged the same as men for insurance. Which I think is ridiculous. All it means is that women will now pay more, rather than men pay less.
But surely that defeats the whole object of insurance statistics? If they are going on equality, then everyone should pay the same. People in manchester should pay the same as people in Devon, Women should pay the same as men, and premiums should be based on age rather than on risk.
Stupid really.

This is the example given to explain this rule better.
You have twin 18 year olds, 1 boy and 1 girl, they both live in the same house, both passed their tests on the same day and both get quotes on the same car. Under the old rules even though the only difference is the sex of the applicants the girl is quoted £1500 and the boy £2700. Under the new rule they would both get the same figure.

Which is fine, statistically the male is more likely to crash with a higher cost to the insurance company than the female is.

Notice how they increase it for women to pay as much as men rather than men pay as much as women the cheaper rate. Its an excuse to rinse us all of yet again more money.

As has been said on another thread - discussion of illegal activities is not acceptable on this forum. Please don't suggest this again. :)

Exactly.
Also, my point about the breaking in thing was this.
Statistically, a male is more likely to crash than a female. And yet, due to 'equality', they are now going to have to pay the same - which will be women paying more, rather than men paying less.
Insurance premiums are caluculated on the risk factor. Statistically, someone in areas of Manchester are more likely to have their car broken in to than someone in the middle of Devon. If everything is equal, then surely that should be as well, and everyone should qualify under the same risk factor as the most crime filled area of the country.
The EU ruling makes no sense with the insurance system as it is. If they are going to rule as they have done today, then they need to revamp the entire UK insurance industry and start everyone with a clean slate, and everyone pay the same first premium which only goes up or down depending how many accidents you do or don't have..
The EU ruling also makes guys insurance go down by around 10%
there were stats on it like woman under 30 on average pay half of what a guy does but with the new ruling womens insurance goes up by 25-30% and mens goes down by 10%.
£200 off £2k ent bad.
just means women have to pay a tad more lol.
im 16 and im 17 in may, im hoping to get a car and have finished my tests by late july into august but tbh its gonna be hard being able to afford a car with the insurance and MOT and also increasing petrol prices. etc but im happy its all starting to go down a bit :).

more political correctness gone mad. EU laws need banning to be fair.
Also Massimo why are you going fully comp for such a cheap car? go third party!

It'll be the cost of injury claims the industry is trying to cover with the horrific insurance for young drivers :censored:
My '92 Carina II (1.6L, 16V) cost me £1,200 to insure but I thought that was due to the performance and lack of airbags!
On a lighter note, has anyone else got tonnes of girl racers springing up around them in little French and German grot boxes that don't seem to be able to stay on their own side of the white line, can't mirror-signal-manoeuvre and don't understand the 2 second rule? :censored:

where do you live?
Yes. I nearly had one go into the back of me the other day.. My drive is off the main road through my town. I was actually watching this girl behind me - she had a car full of all her friends too.
So I indicated that I was going to pull in to my drive on the right, across the oncoming traffic. This was about 30 seconds before I actually stopped, so a LONG time. I then braked slowly (because I was concious of this driver behind me) and came to a stop. A few seconds later, I heard a big screech of tyres, and the car behind me vanished into a cloud of tyre smoke. She was clearly too involved with the stereo/makeup/friends to bother concentrating on the driving.
And then to top it off, she then drove around me, and made a 'hand gesture' at me because it was 'my fault'.. Shocking driving....

Currently paying £25 a month for 1.9 TDI, but got £75 cashback from top cash back so = £225 a year fully comp. Passed test in 97.

Part of the reason for that large quote is your choice of car. It is the chavs favourite to buy knackered and then cover in cheap body kits, drill holes in the exhaust, then crash while drunk or drugged up.
Have you plugged your details in the the quote engines with a selection of other, less chavvy cars??

Car crime is down all over due to the fact that newer models are more difficult to steal. Just cant see how they can justify charging these silly high premiums.
Most of the people i know who own higher cc motors or sporty cars have had silly renewal prices this year.

I always thought that the boy racer cars with ones with tags such as... type-r, vtr, vts, gti, gsi, vxr, gte, sri, etc etc.
Cant imagine an insurance company assuming that a clio 1.2 fits into the boy racer category unless its a renaultsport version or the v6.

The hike in van prices is because people had noticed that a ford escort van was a lot cheaper to insure than a ford escort, or escort estate (ditto Astra etc); so were buying and chav'ing up the van version.
Come on, you have all seen them flying around in vans with mega wide alloys and lowered suspension in recent years.

Any of them are classed as boy racer cars. Clio, Saxo, Corsa etc etc.. Anything thats easily moddable and is likely to be driven into something by a new driver at some point. But its the 'moddable' bit that tends to have quite a big bearing on whether its a boy racer car or not..
KarlHungus
08-03-11, 22:00
Every car is moddable to an extent but usually you have to declare mods which make your insurance void if you dont. Still doesnt explain why people are seeing huge increases on premiums. Friend of mine has an astra gsi turbo, he's just had his renewal quote and its gone up by £200.
All in all you have to start somewhere, a good first car would be one under a group 4. You can check on parkers insurance to give you an idea of the small cars in those groups under 4 which would bring your insurance quote prices down slightly just dont expect massive decreases given that all the insurance premiums are sky high right now.

there is an absolute mass of 1-1.2 litre banged out corsa's /clio's that chavs fit a big bore exhaust too and black out the windows. They'll race you at every set of lights and fail.

Sorry, wrong there bud. The major insurers all use different underwriters, some underwrite their own risk aswell. Every insurance company rates on different risks - no one insurer is cheaper on everything than anyone else, if they were, they'd be out of business in a couple of days.
People also forget that a young driver with a full licence is more risk than one with a provisional, simply because they are allowed out alone on the road with no supervision.
Prices also rise because of claim-farming by no-win no-fee blaggards, aswell as the aftermath of the global financial meltdown.
Unless its absolutely necessary, dont bother with a car, get a bike or use public transport instead.
