ok so i installled vista onto my pc last month. ive had experience with it all before so i stopped services and removed stuff i didnt want. all works fine. but 3 weeks ago after logon my desktop doesnt start. black screen. solve this by runnung explorer.exe in task manager. but recently its been taking 30 mins to configure updates, restarting multiple times whilst doing this for the updates to fail...

latest 18 failures.

does this with over 200 updates.
Code 80071A90 for these ones but its not always the same.
please help...

thanks for that but i have sp1 and it was a clean install. and i dont see how a selected start up would help. anyone else?

tired all the above on the "quick google" rubbish. read it closer next time.

If you have removed features or disabled services then tried to install updates which explicitly require those features or services in order to function you are going to run into problems like this. In any OS you cannot remove dependencies and still expect everything to function. Either reinstall the removed components and enable those services and use the trial and error method of tracking down the problem, or reinstall Vista and pay more attention to what you're disableing in futute. On a side note, if you had SP1, there wouldn't be anywhere near 200 updates to download as SP1 contains cumulative updates for updates previously released through Windows Update.

Tried repairing with the Vista DVD? It's actually fixed a couple of problems for me in the past!

i had the same problem i still cant work it out now, i tried everything and still got no where in the end i just installed xp again

thank you mike for the light at the end of the tunnel...alexnifty that was my last resort. if i do the repair what will i loose? programs? settings?

You shouldn't do. All existing programs and documents should be left intact.

Yeah the repair option will just look at your registry settings and make sure your windows installation is correct. It wont delete your stuff.
