Anybody tested Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) yet?

I've been using it for a fortnight now and it's really excelled itself. Better and better features, faster, better hardware support, and much more user friendly.

It also features WUBI (http://wubi-installer.org/) on the CD (or available for download), which gives anyone the option to try Ubuntu. It utilises a Windows-based Ubuntu installer, and then gives you the choice to boot it up when you turn your PC on, much faster than using a live CD, and can be uninstalled through Add/Remove programs just like any other app.

Certainly a good choice for anyone apprehensive about moving to Windows Vista!

Very nice. I've only used 7.10 personally. That was back in December when I did some charity pc fundraising. Seemed like a very nice OS. Might give 8.04 a go when I have time.

I have used it, but i found the wireless drivers and management is very lacklustre, so i havent bothered with it really since then.

I had to day it came out. Its very goooood!

What you want to try is Linux Mint. That is (dare I say it) better than Ubuntu because they are less strict on there 'open source only' rules e.g. for drivers.

Anyway for Ubuntu Wireless ^ Try install WICD to start with. You may need to get your windows based driver installed with ndiswrapper but all is easy with that application.

Simple add a software source to your list in /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://apt.wicd.net gutsy extras

^ Replacing gutsy with your ubuntu version (dapper, edgy, feisty, gutsy, hardy)

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install wicd

:)
ndiswrapper is the way to go, esp for dell laptops
ps i have found opensuse 10.3 to be far more complete than ubuntu, but you can't beat linuxfromscratch just lock yourself away for a week or two, its worth the effort

BANG IT IN :)
if you like it have ago with openSuSe
it will happily install side by side with windows

its defult wifi can be lame, but you can do some voodoo to fix it
oh and out of the box it won't do codecs for media that might be rip off, 3rd party sorts that out ( it kinda points you in the right direction . . )
