i have a compaq n1005v laptop

it boots up but has no picture so

i have changed memory (no good)

i am about to change hard drive but cannot see where the service manual is on the net,
the HP website appears not to show how to change hard drive on the manual site,

the laptop also has weird "allen key type" screws on the base of the laptop,

so does any one know how to change the hard drive on this particular laptop please,

Terry

The correct term for the "allen key type" is torx screws, that'll help you find the right screwdriver for undoing them. They are normally quite soft, and if you try without the correct tool you will make it very difficult as most likely it will round them out and then you are .... well ..... ermmmmm screwed

Does the laptop have picture to an external screen, if you are not getting error beeps when you boot it's not likely to be ram or HD, more likely to be the screen or motherboard.

As said above, forget the hard drive, for now, test by connecting to an external monitor. It sounds more like a screen or inverter problem.

the laptop works via external monitor

i take it that means it must be the inverter has gone ?

could any one please tell me if they are hard to fit ?

or to find for that matter?

any advise would be good please

It will most likely be under the screen surround. Pull off any rubber covers off the screen surround, should be screws underneath, remove them and the surround should clip off.

The inverter should be at the bottom of the screen, it is usually plugged into the screen by a pink and a white wire at one end, and plugged into the laptop at the other end.

Usually Ebay is the best place to get this type of parts.

There should be some service manuals on the internet of how to replace the inverter/take apart the laptop. Sometimes you just have to remove rubber protectors from around the screen and unscrew the bezel around the screen, and you should be able to access the inverter.

When you power on the laptop, can you see anything on the screen if you shine a light on it, for example?

However, every laptop is different when it comes to replacing parts. You're lucky it wasn't the graphics chip that had broke, otherwise it would've been time for a new laptop. But the fact it works on another monitor means you'll be fine with the inverter :)

i have just rang a laptop engineer

he says with there being no light at all on the screen
it is unlikely to be the inverter
it may be the inverter cable or the screen it self

please keep coming with your advice

Yes could well be the screen, loose connector or inverter. As Sarky said above, if you shine a light on the screen, is there anything on it at all?

If there is nothing whatsoever, then it will be the screen that is faulty or a loose cable.

Screens are pretty cheap and relatively easy to replace.

would it be easy to take the bezel from round the screen

as in just undo the 4 screws and have a look ?

is this where the inverter/cable is ?

i have looked on the HP website

i cannot find any details on how or where to repair this sort of problem

It would be fairly easy yes, but first shine a light on the screen when its switched on to try to make out if there's anything displaying. It'll save from buying one thing when in fact its something else thats broke.

If you can make out the Windows Desktop, then its the inverter.
If there's nothing on screen at all, and you can't see anything, then its the screen itself or the screen cable.

The inverter is usually under the bezel, at the bottom of the screen and the cable for the screen is taped to the back of the screen.

if you hold the screen at ANY angle can you see evidence of any picture at all? If not then I seriously doubt it is the inverter for the backlight.

for the service manual just grab one for the n1020v from here as it is the same chassis anyway

the hard drive is the panel on the bottom opposite to the battery btw

to get to the inverter you remove the 4 screws on the screen bezel and then carefully prize it away although it may well be stuck on the bottom and sides with some double sided tape which can be a right pain to get it free of, If it is I find a scalpel blade works best but if you want to be safe a thin steel rule will also work

but as said try shining a torch or holding the laptop near a bright light to check the lcd is actually displaying an image first
