so i had a brain wave today. you know when your over clocking and a few times the pc will just crash and windows doesn't like this.

so how about a portable Linux that has a integrated stressing tool and monitoring tool. thus not killing windows when trying to find the best clock?

thoughts?

Should be fairly easy to set up a 'live' thumbdrive install of ubuntu or similar with this on it.

LinPack works on Linux AFAIK.

How about a utility that you can choose your linux and it does all the work of building the stick for you??

Well there is one and it does work. I've done it using version 5.2 of Puppy Linux just to test it.

It builds a bootable(or not) Portable Virtualbox running the Linux you choose. see: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ (http://www.linuxliveusb.com/)

It is useful in that you can (as well) run exactly the same install under VirtualBox from the USB as a totally Portable app - including the portable virtualbox. So you could (if allowed) use it at work at lunch time without interfering or rebooting your Work's Windows.

AH HA. one step ahead of you their. already running it, its a great little tool. brilliant for taking the first Linux steps.

now to take it a step further if it could then install programs to the selected version now that would be cool.

I'm sure that with a little fiddling you could get it to work with a pre-built virtual machine. In any case I prefer to install the programs myself as I tend to use different locations than the defaults (especially for data so I can share it between OSs)

Nice! I built myself an arch linux live disk with mprime and lmsensors but this is much better.
