View Full Version : What motherboard..
ok, so its looking like my new build might finally be happening - but I'm just stuck on what motherboard to get. I've been waiting for the Q9450 to become available, but that looks like its not going to be for months, so I'm going to go for an E8400 as a stopgap, and see how that goes, and then maybe get a Q9450 at a later date.
So the question is - what are the the best overclocking motherboards available at the moment. Maybe in price brackets - One Sub-£100, one in the £100-£130 range and one £130+..
:)

i took a bit of leway on the prices :D
But will those all work with a E8400? considering the problems with flashing.
P35 and X38/X48 natively support Wolfdale and will at least allow you to boot.
Sub £100 - Goes to the MSI P35 Neo2 Fr and Gigabyte P35 DS3R
Good clockers, reliable and supports 45nm Duals and Quads. Neo2 Fr has a better feature set and a BIOS that's shared with more expensive models.
£100-130 - DFI LanParty DK X48 T2R. Brilliant board. Overclocks well, excellent feature set and tidy MB design. DFI Enthusiast reputation. Can be had around £130
£130+ - DFI LanParty LT X48 T2R. Similar to the above board but with a better power regulation design, colour scheme, better NB cooling and a serious overclocker. Should have very good end user support across various major global tech forums. Can be had around £165
neo2 is back in stock so i would add that to my list too.

i got to agree with your list they sound the best specially the DS3R thats my personal choice
i heard of someone getting a Q6600 to 3.7 on that board and it also takes the E8400 and Q9450 out the box
yep, i will concur about the p35 ds3r, i got one of these rev 2.0 that aria have in stock now and iv had 525 fsb out of it with very little increase of voltage to the mobo with my 8200.
shipped with bios f7 and it works fine.
Well, it just comes down to getting the best bang for the buck.. In my mind I had the gigabyte board as an option (along with the Neo2 somewhere in the list). I hadnt really considered a DFI board, although I've always liked them in the past, so I may well take a quick look at those before I make a choice - but I'm still open to more options :)
Thanks so far :D

if it makes and bearing on your option gigabyte and asus are doing good at the minute with a good choice between the p35, x38 and 780i/790i chipset mother boards
personal i picked up a DS3R for 3 easy reasons first it has a p35 chipset which i hear it is good for gaming with (and OCing), second thing is it takes the Q9300 / Q9450 / Q9550 out the box
lastly it support's ddr2 1066mhz ram and it states on the box as overclockable to 1200mhz so it can take the fastest ddr2 going, i dont need to state the price on ddr3 over ddr2 with only a 5% boost in some areas

Just looking at this board, and alot of places only spec up to ddr800 memory - is that right?!
And also, what do you reckon to the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5?
X48 chipset natively supports DDR2-1066 and there'd be no reason for DFI to cap this on a high end board. I suspect it's nothing more than a spec error.
On another note, the X48 DS5 is also a good board to consider yeah.
Right, I reckon i'm gonna go for the Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5, an E8400, an 8800GTS 512mb of some flavor and 4Gb RAM - probably something like this:

might even order it tomorrow.. :)
How about

Also whats this talk of Q9450 not being available for months? have intel withdrawn it again?
I was actually just re-looking at motherboards and was looking at that one again.. I'm doing the whole "decide>go to spend money>re decide>re look>decide>go to spend money" loop.. hehe
And no, just alot of sites are listing it as not being in stock till july-ish, so I thought i'd go for something now instead :)
cracking board, my current choice everytime for a quad, wolfdale, core 2 build
ok, I think I've decided.. finally. I already have a Lian Li PC7+ and a Silverstone DA850 PSU (Thanks Mac ;)), 2x160Gb Drives, optical drives, etc etc.. so I'm adding:
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 PRO
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 Socket 775 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz (Retail 775)
OCZ 4GB PC2-8000 Platinum XTC (2x2GB)
MSI GeForce 8800GT 512MB
500GB Samsung Spinpoint SATA2 16MB
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64 OEM
1. Will the board support ddr 1000? it states 1066 would it be better to buy 1066?
2. Good choice of board
3. good gfx
4. good heatsink
5. i'd go for this drive on WSS http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/500GB+Seagate+Barracuda+SATA2+32MB+ST3500320AS+720 0RPM?productId=29640
6. great cpu choice
Thanks! (http://forums.aria.co.uk/member.php?u=611)
1. Will the board support ddr 1000? it states 1066 would it be better to buy 1066?I couldnt see any 1066 modules in stock.. And yeah, it should do as far as I know.. If not, it should just default to the next lowest speed. I was originally going for 800 Ram, so i'm not overly bothered. It'll be a good experiment anyway! hehe!
Thanks! (http://forums.aria.co.uk/member.php?u=611)
  :p
Just did a quick look on the aria website and there are these two questions and answers posted:
Planning to build new rig with this ram on a gigabyte GA-P35-S3G MoBo and a D2C E8200 1333FSB. Is this ram compatible and will it run at the full 1000MHz ?
Thanks

Your motherboard supports 1066Mhz RAM modules. If it can supply to correct voltage of 2.1V, the RAM will run at 1000Mhz. If not this RAM supports 1.8V too and will run at a lower speed.
I am planning to buy this memory for a build with the above motherboard with the AMD 6400+ AM2 processor. The description of this memory says it is 1000mhz, and the board supports DDR2 800 and 1066. Will this be ok?

Yes, that will be fine
