try

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

should restart the entire gui (assuming you are using gnome).

No idea lol, but if it's not running how it should the first time around then I personally would immediately blame it on a installation problem and reinstall it. I think trying any other route will probably be long or just a waste of time. As for how it messed up I have no idea, is that a actual install or a virtual install? 32bit or 64bit?

It a real install on my laptop. And it's 32bit.

Going to see if it is the ISO and do a virtual for tests.

Seen this before. It usually happens because compiz AND gtk-window-manager launch or something similar.

Could you try pressing Alt+F2 or opening a terminal and typing:

compiz --replace ccp

and if that fixes it, put that in your startup programs.

if cc isn't installed, you need to install the build packages...

apt-get install build-essential

I need to be in root to do that.

But IDK the root password...?

I need to be in root to do that.

But IDK the root password...?

just add sudo to the beginning of that line and it will execute it.

--------------

If you haven't set/changed root password upon install then its going to be an md5 hash i believe. Just do

sudo passwd

and it should ask for a new UNIX password. Thats the root password. Then its just

sudo su

to login as root.

On a different note, all sudo does is execute the command with root capabilities without being logged in as root. If something tells you to use apt-get install something then just add sudo on the font of the line to save the hassle of loggin onto the root profile, also visa versa, if you are on the root profile, simply remove sudo as you already have root permissions.

I did the

"sudo apt-get install build-essential"

and it does something and asks to install ~50Mb of data.

I then do the

"compiz --replace ccp"

But I get th same error.

Try just using :

compiz --replace

you may be using an old version of compiz as you use ubuntu.
