View Full Version : FAO: 2GB Patriot PC2-6400 Extreme Owners
Hope you're all having a good weekend so far.
Picked up my new 2GB Patriot PC2-6400 Extreme Performance set from my local Royal Mail and installed it. I don't tend to boot straight into windows with new RAM but instead assign the appropriate Memory Timings and Voltage in BIOS then run Memtest86+. This is after my last RAM kit change where I managed to corrupt my Windows XP Installation.
Anyway, around 56% in on the first test, I was greeted with 6 memory errors at rated timings and voltage. I wasn't too sure whether it was faulty memory as such because someone else who ordered the same kit is suffering the same problem. A quick read on google suggests that this is a common problem, often shared by other sets of memory using the same Memory IC's (Micron D9's of some variant) and is normally due to the Voltage being set too high.
I have now dropped my voltage to 2.1V and so far has lasted memtest86+ longer than at 2.2V.
Now then. I'm not sure whether anyone's aware of this and whether previous batches of the RAM are also affected. It's not really a fault s such but more of the fact that 2.2V might not be the optimum voltage for this kit at PC2-6400 speeds at 4-4-4-12.
For those that own this set of memory, I'd be interested to know how yours are configured and if you havn't yet, apply 4-4-4-12 timings, 2.2V, burn an ISO of Memtest86+ and try and run it for 5 passes without errors.

I'll continue to update you all with my findings.
Cheers,
Mul
I'm the other chap that Mul mentioned, my kit fails at 2.2V, and passes at 2.0V, I've not tried 2.1V.
I have found cases of other memory acting like this, Including an old GeIL Ultra Kit I have (Old enough to be micron D9 based I think).

If you are talking about the 2Gb kit (2x1Gb) then I have had no issues with mine,
I was running at 2.2V but I tend to run them at 2.1v as on my board it takes it out of the red unreccomended settings.
Any chance you could set yours to 2.2V and run Memtest86+ for us?
Update from my kit, I've passed one loop of memtest86+ now at 2.1V so this kit is definitely more stable below 2.2V
Another update. 5 passes with memtest86+ and no problems whatsoever. Can certainly conclude now that at least this recent batch of Patriot prefers lower voltages. This shouldn't be considered as a bad thing though.

Yep, as soon as I can dig out my ubuntu disk

1st run - pass
Just to confirm Specs:-
Q6600 @ 3Ghz
MSI P35 Neo2-FR
Memory at 2.2V
Thanks for that. Looks like it's something in the recent batches.

Done 2 passes now. Memtest86+ v1.7
Ram was set at 4.4.4.12 trfc 35, twr 6 twtr 12 trrd 12 trtp 12
just in case my voltages are
3.3v - 3.408v (From Bios)
5v - 5.087v
12v - 12.056v
5v sb - 5.040v
Yep I have read someware this ram is not what it was,
they have changed the chips on this years batch,
will try to find the review link.
They seem to be a fairly good set. Just don't seem to overclock as well as they used to, that's for sure.
Makes me wonder though. The set comes with an EPP profile for DDR2-1000 5-5-5-15 but the set doesn't seem to be capable of that. Max I've managed so far is DDR2-950.
i got emal from ocz a few weeks back about the volts i run thru mine, although they are designed to run with upto 2.2v we know reccomemd only 2.0v they also said that if i had any problems running my sticks @ddr1000 i should set the trfc to 48 or above. i have never gone above 2.1v running what both this bios and that of my asus claimed to be 2.08v i have only had issues when i play with the sub timings.
they also said somthing about trfc above 48 mul try that and see if you can get ddr1000. does you mobo support it tho?

Mines working nicely at 999 with the FSB @ 333
Just to clarify is it this kit?

and does it run ok @ 800mhz 4-4-4-12?
Yup, thats what I've got mine running at :)

Yes, but it also has a EPP of 1000Mhz 5.5.5.15.35 @ 2.3v
Heres what I found, http://www.custompc.co.uk/labs/120991/patriot-pdc22-g6400llk.html
seems it will do what it says on the tin, just dont expect it to be a great overclocker.

Shame there is no way to identify the chips installed.
I am not prepared to attempt to remove the heatsinks
How much *real* performance gain can be had though by going above the stock 800mhz 4-4-4-12?
lots, conroes love the membandwidth.

well that is the best way but it could be;
PC2-6400LL
PDC21G6400+LLK / PDC22G6400+LLK
4.0-4-4-12 @ 2.1 ~ 2.2V
Elpida AG-6E-E
Micron D9GMH (B6-3)
Micron D9DQW (BT-37E)
Micron D9DQT (BT-3)
Yeah, where the D9GMH's the best out of the bunch, followed by the Micron's then the Elpida's.
Honestly, while Conroes like their mem bandwith, real world performance between stock and overclocked RAM is incredibly small. Was just trying to overclock it for the sake of it. Yes, my board does support up to DDR2-1066 and the chipset allows for true Async memory overclocking.
So far, it seems to be working fine at DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 2.0V. 2.1V seems to result in lock ups and 2.2V errors out in memtest86, never tried in XP. Still pleased with the set given the price.
for most things you right as the 6gb/s(give or take) will be more than enough to keep their machine happy, but if your re encoding a movie or f@h and other cpu intensive tasks the step up from 800 to 1000 (8gb/s) will be noticed.
I run mine at 4-4-4-12 @ 2.2v and never had a problem with them :)
I have this RAM and when i let my board run it on automatic settings, which were the right ones, it rebooted the system every few days with 2gb and every few hours with 4gb. No change when I manually set them and when i tried to overclock... *shudder*.
So they'll be going in the bin and I'll get some shiny new Ballistix or something :)

lol don't bin em, send em to me :D

On another note I'm still getting BSOD's. Will have another play with the voltages and with a bit of fine tuning they should be ok. What's for sure is that the new chips on the Patriot kits seem to be a little bit finnicky.
Try 2.0 to 2.1V? An ISO of Memtest86+ will come handy too. Also, you're well within your rights to RMA them if you're sure they're faulty. Don't bin them!
