Hi

I currently have a wireless network via a BelkinN1 wireless router but the signal is too weak in one of my rooms. I was looking at connecting a homeplug to this, and at the other end connecting the other homeplug to a D-Link DIR-635 Wireless-N Broadband ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dir_products/dir-635/DIR-635_manual_10.pdf which has 4 wired connections at the back for my xbox and pcs etc. Before i buy all these can someone please let me know it it will work?
Also is 85mbps fast enough for xbox live?

Cheers

200mbps would b better. With powerline/homeplugs the maximum speed listed can be effected by distance, wiring etc and you rarely get the max rated speed. It will also help if u intend on using more the one device at the same time through the homeplug.

Do u own a dir-635 or is that one of the things u are looking at buying? Really, u only need a switch and it should b cheaper.

router ->homeplug -> switch ->>>>

p.s. in actual fact a similar question was asked on the product page http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Networking/Switches+and+Hubs/TP-Link+10%2F100+5+Port+Desktop+Switch?productId=4104 6

85mpbs is fine for xbox live as you'll always be limited by your internet connection speed which even at the max available today is only 50mbps ;)

homeplugs are good but not perfect ;)

cheers for the reply!

Probably will be using xbox live and surfing net at same time. I need to buy the dir-635 (or something similar) so i can use the wireless signal for my netbook.

sorry for the thread hijack but i had a similar questions except id like to know if the situation would work to a repeater rather than a switch like

wifi router -> home plug -> wireless repeater >>>>>>>>>>

They should both work fine :)

The only thing about the situation in the OP - is the DIR-635 a modem as well, or purely an access point with 4 network ports?

It can cause a couple of setup issues when using a modem as an access point, if it doesnt have that mode. Thats not to say its not possible though :)

You can get homeplug devices with built in WiFi. I've used the Solwise ones on a couple of jobs, always work fine.

Due to Virgin giving them away a dir 615 can be bought for next to nothing. Unlike the 635 it can be flashed with ddwrt and used as a bridge, bridge repeater, or a wireless repeater.

85mbps might b enough for just internet but u never get the rated speed (i get half on mine) and if u ever wanted to use it later down the line for transferring files, streaming media etc or even adding a second homeplug client in another room I'd personally choose the 200mbps plugs.
