watcha campers!

right, i have caught the bug and have built another setup:-

Asus p5vd2-vm-se motherboard, e2140 1.6GHZ dual core Intel CPU, coolmaster CPU cooler, 2GB Arianet PC5300 667mhz RAM, seagate barracuda 160GB HDD, NEC DVDRW, Soundblaster audigy card, 340W generic PSU, Akasa exhaust fan, OS Vista. (everything brand new)

the installation went well, vista was running perfectly. when i installed the wireless adapter it went a bit weird. i got connected to the net and tried to update windows to get the latest drivers etc. but it stopped and gave me a error code. tried again after solving the problem using windows and it came up with another error. then explorer failed and closed. it restarted and defender came up with an error, then everything went crazy. i just kept getting pop ups saying that variious programs were failing or had stopped working.

after about 10mins the screen went black and blue but all fuzzy. it then crashed totally and rebooted. i then went through letting it check for system errors etc and the tests completed with no problems shown. once i logged in on windows it started going wrong exactly the same as before and crashed, it then rebooted again with the same blue and black screen coming up.

i started it up with the windows disc in and did a memory diagnostic check as i thought a stick may have failed or been faulty but that came back with no problems and windows booted perfectly. i then logged in and it stared all over again. everything stopped working until eventually it froze and rebooted.

so i tried a system restore to the point before i installed the wireless adapter but that then failed too with and error.

i then rebooted and it started and ran perfectly. logged in with no obvious problems as before except defender had stopped working. i then tried once again to do windows update and the screen went blue and black instantly.

that was 20mins ago and i turned it off to give up for the night.

if anyone can help me with suggestions as to what it could be i'd really appreciate it because tonight i'm at my wits end with it!!!!

only problem is it still wont download the windows updates. it just keeps searching but nothing happens!

I've had windows not install correctly in the past, due to dodgy ram. Things ran fine for a while, then the fun started. Changed one stick of ram, after narrowing it down, then reinstalled windows, been fine since. This was with xp pro though.

id guess the wifi has caused some kind of error in the update and that the issue, can you wire it up and rerun the updates? or even reinstall and update thru a wire.

got it all running smoothly now although its now only on 1gb of ram. which is a ****er as the ram was brand new from aria and it cant be faulty cos it works fine with either one installed just not with both at the same time?!?!

does anyone know how to overclock the p5vd2 board as i cant find any settings for it. the multiplyer appears to be locked on 8 but i cant find any options to change the fsb or ram voltage etc

any ideas?

Sounds to me like you may have a faulty board. Both ram slots won't work together correctly? You can't unlock the multiplier on a E2180?

Hmmm............
Tried updating or resetting the bios?
