View Full Version : GTX 580 cards not performing
Hey everyone..
I recently bought the GTX 580 SLI Gladiator system from Aria. I changed the case to a XL fractal and finally go it delivered on Friday. It looks beautifull and the build is great...
But...... the GTX 580 cards are barely hitting 20 FPS in games. Lowest to highest in game settings only give me 19fps in Mafia 2 (with and without physX, min and max settings). 20 fps in Crysis lowest settings. 3D mark vantage scores are shocking. I get 15 fps in the Jane Nash benchmark.
What gives? The cards feel 'capped' as I get the same fps across the board. Ive updated all drivers, and tried swopping the cards and running them individually. But the same thing occurs.
Is this a motherboard issue? Drivers perhaps? This machine was £2000 and £800 of that was GPUs. I know these cards can play these games but currently it is unplayable..
Please could someone from tech give me some help?
I have emailed Gareth as he was my point of contact within Aria. But I hoped I could hurry this along via the forums.
Many thanks
james
I wondered... Is the overclocking done in the BIOS?
i.e could I just re-install windows and still have the overclock. And see if the cards come to life?
welcome to Aria. hope your problem get sorted asap.
yes, re-install windows won't break your overclocking. overclocking is done on the motherboard, windows has nothing to do with it.
Hey wuyanxu....
thanks for the quick respone. Are you wuyanxu from Bit-tech forums? Saw you replied on my thread yesterday.. Hoping I can get this fixed, and unleash these cards!
windows re-install would be a last resort but it couldnt hurt?
Have you checked to see what gpu-z is reporting the clocks to be?
I would definately say to download something such as msi afterburner so you can check what the clock speeds are and also look if it is overheating.

What resolution are you at?
GPU-Z shows he clocks are 50mhz when on the desktop and go to 772mhz when playing games. So they are running at correct speeds? (Palit GTX 580 reference cards)
Furmark came installed on the system, and they dont get hotter than about 85..
Its like buying a porsche that can only do 30 mph! My bootcamped imac can run mafia 2 better than this. Im not moaning for the sake of a few fps.. im literally getting unplayable rates :(
EDIT: resolution 1920x1080 so not taxing at all fo the 580's
Are there any benchmarks installed on the system? Could run one of them to see if it scores correctly.
Odd really that the gpu's give you such a low fps at 1920x1080, you should be getting masses more.
Im not at my PC this afternoon but I do have the link to the 3dMark vantage score I did last night. I did 3DMArk11 also but dont have the link to the scores.

Check out the FPS for the Jane Nash benchmark...15 fps!!!! WTF? People with one card reach 90 fps easy...
Ive tried cards out of SLI mode and they come in at the same score
Definately something bottlenecked there.
Random stab in the dark... perhaps the CPU cooler has become dislodged during transit, and the cpu is throttling back to keep temps in check... which is bottlenecking the whole system.
It's a long shot, but can you fire up CPU-Z and maybe CoreTemp to check CPU speeds and temps ? They're free downloads if not installed :)
@Spaceboy i'll have to run CPU-Z once I get back from work.
I asked for the heatsink to be shipped seperately and fitted it myself (with a friends help who makes the CG workstaions for us at work, so I trust we did it right)
What figures on CPU-Z would suggest overheating or a problem with cooler? It definately feels like something is capping performance rather than a fault in either card. Ive had no crashes on the PC or any graphical oddities...
Have you tried benching one card on it's own and then swapping them out to see if they are preforming ok.
Something is really odd with that. p11364 with two 580's and a i7 950 at 4.2GHz......I really don't know what the problem could be...

Altough it does seem that you have one of the newest drivers for GFX, it may worth reinstalling it. It does sometimes causes problems on multi-GPU configurations.
Tried benching them indiviually and they both hit a 3D mark11 score of 3007/9. So they are both functioning at the same level (a very low level!).
Just spoke with Customer Care, and they suggested a clean Windows install first. Ive only had it since Friday so there's not much on there. They also said the CPU could be overheating and throttling the cards. So ive gotta double check that too..
I hope I can get this sorted soon as poss. This machine should be eating games up, but as it stands it cant even handle lowest settings...
my 580s are  slooooooow
My money is on the cpu throttling the whole system... really hope it's something obvious and easily sorted when you get to the bottom of it :)

unlucky mate, hopefully you'll be able to say "my 580s are sooo fast" by the end of this.
my gtx 580 score over 6000 points in 3dmark 11, so your cards are definitely not working correctly.
yes same person from bit-tech. was going to do the evil twin but can't be bothered to type witty remarks. :coffee:
Cheers for the replies guys..
I'll update tomorrow after ticking a few of these suggestions off tonight..
Soon I will able to unleash the 580 SLI behemoth on these games, and then we'll see who's boss. Cus right now the games are laughing at them...
Very odd indeed, hope you get it sorted soon, also I'd recommend getting a 3D monitor :D, can play Mafia 2 maxed out (W/o physx) @ 60hz for each eye in 3D, very much worth it imo :).
@ Pullen..
I bought a 3D monitor especially! Got the BenQ xl2410t. Thats why Im so eager to get this sorted. I had a quick go on Metro 2033 in 3D.. Looks awesome. Just choppy as hell due to my problems. I want to play mafia 2 through again in 3Dvision and PhysX on full! Thats what I bought this machine for!
Greedy I know, but it was a present to myself..from me!

Yay, now I'm not the only guy on the forums with a 3D set-up ^_^.
Check my out my Mafia 2 Benchmark Thread:

It was before I got my second 580, but if you look at where I use my 480 for physx, the results are similar between that and when having a 2nd 580 in SLI with physx on "auto-select" (In the nvidia CP).
surely you can plug directly into your Apple iMac, assuming it's the 27inch iMac.
bigger size + higher resolution is better than 3D :p

Yeah you're right, but I would of needed an Atlona AT DP400 which costs £200 bucks to plug it in the imac! Plus to power that resolution 2660x1440 would take some horsepower (which I think ive got)
I figured Id bump the £200 up and buy a 3D monitor instead. It seems that all the major companies are pushing 3D this year, so I thought Id jump on the wagon too :)
Im pleased I did as its very impressive. And If I find some more money down the line I'll buy that converter and try the 27inch screen out..
wow that's expensive.
i can assure you that you've got more than enough horsepower to power 2560x1440. because i run it with one card :D
i also thought about getting iMac 27inch on its release. went into Apples store and asked on how to connect iMac to computer, the Apple noobs were so confused they asked around and came back saying you can't....... then i gave up on that idea when i found out the operating system have to be running for the monitor to work. that means about 80w for the monitor instead of 40w.
so i bought the Dell U2711 instead. :weeee same panel, except it's a proper monitor with OTT amount of inputs. you could have done similar, Mac Mini + gaming desktop to Dell U2711 :D
That would be a nice set-up..
When I bought the imac it cleared me out of funds. It met all of my work needs for Photoshop and Maya modelling/texturing. But then one day I bootcamped it and started playing some PC games that Id never been able to try before..Crysis namely.
That gave me a taste and I when I saw the PhysX trailer for Mafia 2 I knew I needed a dedicated gaming rig..
And now I find myself here. With a huuuge PC on my desk waiting to tear up some games... but untill I sort this problem. its a dud!!
Any developments on the issues asked? Got anything tested?

Gonna remove the overclock tonight!
'IF' this solves the GPU problems, how much 'horsepower' from the CPU do i really lose. Enough to impact gaming?
Id be dropping from 4.2 to 3.2. But because it hasnt worked at all i wont be able to tell a difference ..
Obviously these questions are mute if removing the o/c does nothing
i cant see how an overclock cpu would hold the gpu back :/
i think its software related, be it windows or drivers. i would start with drivers taking them all off and putting the latest of each back on. if thats no better i would try tweaking those drivers before i would look at installing windows again.
does setting the nv cp power management to max performance do anything for you?
We have lift off people!:weeee
I saved Arias overclock in the BIOS and loaded defaults. Went straight to Mafia 2 benchmark, and immediately got an average FPS of 49 with PHYSX on!!
Booted up Crysis straight after to make sure I wasnt dreaming, and now I get a buttery smoooth 60ish FPS..
Finally!!!!! :P I can play these games! Its been tough waiting, but last night I stayed up late as I could playing Mafia 2 in 3D with all the effects of PHYSX.
Im really happy this has solved it. But cant understand why an overclock profile could cripple the cards..
Time to speak to Aria about what to do with this dodgy overclock profile...
Thanks for your help everybody!! Might not hear from me for a while, as Ive got some serious catching up to do with my gaming!! :D
Glad you have it working now :D
Run a benchmark, even if its just to compare to your runs with the overclock and oggle in the improvments.
Its strange that the overclock was the cause of the gpu throttling. I can understand that if the CPU didnt like the overclock it could throttle its self under load so as to keep the temps down, but I have never ever seen a situation like yours where it effected the gpu.
Very glad to hear the hardware is basically sound :thumb:
Shame about the overclock though, I still reckon it's overheating and throttling back, bottlenecking the whole system...
Might be worth installing CoreTemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ and checking temps while playing (or running Prime95 for example)... and then loading the overclock profile and trying again to compare temps :)
i wonder if the oc downclocked the pcie lanes?
i wonder if the oc downclocked the pcie lanes?
twas my first thought as well
What's interesting is that were 3 Aria o/c profiles already saved on the BIOS.
I might try loading these in turn and checking results. If I can squeeze that CPU back to 4.2 with no problems, it cant be a bad thing...
jam check the profiles and see if the pci e clock is set at 100mhz or on auto.
only other thought is if it needs more voltage to it but as its all on dye now so im not sure which it would be.
For those that are interested, here's a before and after 3Dmark Vantage score. They're side by side so you can compare...
http://3dmark.com/compare/3dmv/2891833/3dmv/2897083
Jane Nash leaps from 15.08 to 97.15 fps. Pretty crazy increase, and shows just how bad my cards were performing.
Yesterday the PC wouldnt start, untill I powered down completely. And then it went to post screen and said overclock failed! But I was using default settings.. I loaded defaults again and everything was fine. Does the computer try to load the profile at the top of the list?
thanks
Mine sometimes fails to start (fail to load overclock) If I have overclocked quite high an made it unstable and then removed it.
That's a massive increase in score. Even the CPU score increases despite the overclock being dropped.
What's with this ?
Memory 1536 MB 0 MB
Core clock 772 MHz 0 MHz
Memory clock 2004 MHz 0 MHz
Looks like the overclock is killing the detection of the gfx cards, and thus the ability to use them at all
Thats with the run that scored correctly though.
