Friends internet problem

Ok so here is the problem im trying to use team viewer to remote connect and i cant as his pc is stating some problem team viewer cant connect to the server.
Skype is on and working IE wont connect and he cant use any tools that connect to he Internet to download files, firefox is working.
Internet setting in control panel are set to automatically detect settings and also the same is set in IE no proxy server checked.
He is using windows xp sp3, any ideas? > got to go out so ill drop in tomorrow.
Just forgot to mention the pc is virus free its been scanned with avast, firewall is fine.

sounds like one of those spyware or trojans that locks down IE and the such but firefox does work need to get something more than avast for that try malwarebytes to start with

Thinking exactly the same thing avast came up clean cant install spybot for some reason, if i could remote connect i could fix the problem.

I had a similar problem trying to fix my friends dads laptop a while ago, firefox was working, but ie wasnt but meant skype wasnt working. i disabled norton straight away then tried endless other things but to no avail, in the end after many hours i uninstalled norton and it instantly solved the problem.

Yes i do believe Norton was on the laptop, I will try to use the uninstaler to clean up the mess its probably left.

Fixed it , it was some Norton stuff left over used the Norton uninstaller to remove all the hidden stuff and all working as normal now.

Norton is more trouble than its worth to be honest, only protection i use these days is malwarebytes, it seems to be failry decent.
