Why 64bit if you have only 2GB RAM?
thats just the one i bought to be honest mate. still a beginner so didn't realise. running 64bit on this pc i'm typing on now with only 2gb too, runs fine.
was looking at ram again earlier though and will be getting more asap.
anyway, have you got any ideas why the screen keeps freezing? could really do with your help

Have you had anything running on it before ? got another hard drive to try?
It could be the CD. Is it a legit copy?
Are you trying to upgrade the XP install or a clean install of vista?
I LOVE your MK1 btw..
Im a VW man myself8)

nope. new build. haven't got another hard drive although that is brand new. looked in bios and everything is detected with no problems at boot, it just seems to be when i try to install windows at the green loading bar screen it freezes.
Hmm. Try taking a stick of ram out, So only the 1gb. It will be a little slower but vista has a few problems with ram. It wouldnt detect my USB flash drive with 3gb. I had to take one out!
Other then that you could look at making a streamline disk and put SP1 on it. They may have a fix. Google for somthing called v-lite.
I find the microsoft website good help.
http://support.microsoft.com/
p.s just ordered OCZ 4GB PC2-6400 Vista Performance Gold (2x2GB) as i definately want to run Vista 64
if you think of ANYTHING that could stop it freezing up let me know mate ;)

btw it is legit. freshly ordered last week!
p.s MATT you obviously have VERY good taste. VW's are the best cars ever. dont get me started though i could talk about them all day and would probably bore you!!!!:lol::lol:
p.p.s now off to take out a stick of ram then ;)
I could talk about them all day yes. I have a lupo myself8)

Vandal, writing your name on walls Mat :P
very nice. startin to get a love for lupo's. remind me of a modern day mk1. my mates missus just bought a white lupo 16v. really nice. he's got a corrado storm and we just G40'd his polo last saturday.
fingers crossed will be starting my new mk1 project in the summer. going to stick a 16v in it on carbs as a track day car.
you should check out the local forum www.ec-dc.co.uk (http://www.ec-dc.co.uk) or go on www.edition38.com/forums (http://www.edition38.com/forums) i'm on there alot too ;)
p.s do you have any pics of the mk3 24v v6? sounds awesome!!! is it white?
I know most of the forums. Ive bought and sold on E38 but not really a member of it as i think its too big and get lost on there.
Im mostly on club GTI and the Lupo forum, Volksdevil too:mrgreen:
Will put some pics up of the Mk3 when i turn my desktop on next if i can find them:)
Its dark blue..
dont believe it!
took the 2nd stick of ram out so that it was running on 1gb and it started up and installed vista perfectly. i then updated all the drivers etc, was running amazingly fast. very happy!so i shut it down to re-install the 2nd stick of ram. did that and put the outer casing on for the 1st ever time.
went to start it up.........NOTHING
power light on the motherboard comes on and evrything is plugged in properly but nothing will fire up at all.
any ideas anyone?
p.s i've been working on a anti static mat all this time and wear the wrist strap every time, what the hell have i done?!?!?

Try the second stick in the first slot if that doesn't work it's DOA

will do. by DOA i take it you mean its knackered?
if yes does that mean my CPU, graphics cards etc etc will all be ruined too?
i feel sick i'm so gutted.

Nope, if you put the second stick which causes the system to not work in the slot with the working stick in and it works then it's a dodgy motherboard. If it doesn't then it's the RAM and you need to RMA it. You're other components will all be ok...

as long as my CPU is ok i dont mind! its £120 for a new one!
i ordered 4GB of OCZ gold ram earlier tonight anyway and about 1 hour ago ordered a new motherboard. i will definately be broke for the next couple of months and wont be buying a new geforce 8800GTS or a new monitor but i HAVE to get this going.
the thing that annoys me the most is that i had it running perfectly and didn't actually need to install the other stick of ram as i had ordered the new 4gb set as i mentioned ^^^ above.
just want to thank you again Pete for all your help and time.
i just wish i knew how i caused the static damage even though i had my earth wrist strap on etc!
Check out microsoft, i THINK there is a patch to improve vista 64 compatability with more than 2gb. Can't search for you myself as i am at work atm.
Yes as Mac says there is a patch but if i were you i would download Vista 64 SP1 and install that. It has all the fixes regarding that kind of thing in one pack.
I dont think you would have shorted anything. It quite hard to do that straight away as it works down over time, Not just go straight away.
I would stick the other ram back in and try it. If that works put the other back in and if not its bad ram. Make sure you use the same port on the MB or try them all if you have time.
You wouldnt have spiked the ram. If its new it could just be a bad batch.
If none of that works it could be your case. Did you use the fibre washers behin the screws? Make sure you didnt get a standoff in the wrong place and its shorting out under the MB. Easy mistake...
The last time this happened to me (No power to it) i forgot to plug the CPU power plug in...I would boot for 1 second and then turn off.
morning everyone
right, when i took the first stick of ram out to install vista i didn't remove the other as there was no need. so nothing had actually changed. i didn't undo any plugs or move any wiring inside the casing.
the same applies for when i shut down the system after sucessfully installing vista 64 and all the drivers to re-install the other stick of ram i had just taken out 30mins previously. i switched off at the mains and on the psu, put on the wrist earth and slotted it back in the where i had taken it out from. i then put the case cover on and wired up the monitor/keyboard/mouse etc and tried to start it again. that was when nothing happened.
i did put fibre washers behind the screws.
so basically the current situation is when everything is plugged in and the power is on all that happens is the light on the motherboard comes on but when i press the power button it stays exactly the same. nothing even attempts to boot up

Try the second stick of RAM in the first slot to rule out the motherboard
Try the second stick of RAM in the first slot to rule out the motherboard
just done this^^^
nothing. once again the motherboard light comes on but nothing happens when i try to power up
psu still doesn't even turn etc
If the PSU isn't turning on, then I would check to make sure you haven't accidentally knocked out any of the cables that connect the power button to the motherboard. If the motherboard light is coming on, then the PSU is supplying power to the board, and it seems like its just not switching on..
Have a look and see what you can find! :)

i thought this aswell so unplugged every wire earlier and plugged them all back in just in case i had touched or knocked something but still no luck!
is there any possibility that i've knocked out something like the psu? i'm used to working on cars and the majority of the time with problems like these its a fuse but there aren't any in a PC! there doesn't seem to be anything that i can physically look at and spot a problem.
god dam it i am useless! lol
So it powers up fine with stick A in slot one but not stick B in slot one, this is one stick at a time?
Just so we are clear you tired each stick on its own?

yes mate. tried each stick on its own. and it will not power up with EITHER of them.
it powered up once with stick A in slot one (when i installed all software) but when i tried to start it with both sticks in it wouldn't start. the problem has continued since then
Hmm, Its a tricky one. Even with no Ram in it should still fire up but then beep at you to say there is no ram.
Is there an earth cable on the PSU?
Before you do this, I just wanna hear other peoples opinions... But the other option is to try starting up the PSU without using the power button, by shorting 2 pins on the motherboard connector.. You'll find out if the PSU is working or not then, but its slightly risky, as some PSU's need to be put under some sort of load otherwise they will release the magic smoke and wont work again..
Mac, what do you think about that?
not that i can see matt?
aaron, i'll wait for other peoples opinions before i do anything else
If you were running it out of the case before how were you switching it on?

think you've misunderstood me mate. i just had 1 side off of the casing whilst working on it. its been in the case all along. been powering it up with the on/off switch on the tower.
wish i had some spare parts to test if its the psu or whatever. know what i mean?
Ah i see. Yeah i needed some parts for trial and error too!
One thing to try just to make sure its not the on/off switch is put the reset switch on the on/off jumpers. So swap the on/off and reset switch round

You could try shorting the power pins on the motherboard this will rule out a duff switch on the case.
Psu's that require a minimum load certainly wont release the magic blue smoke if powered up off load (as Aaron put it) they just wont power up, or will power up then down immediately.

That linky will tell you how to power up a psu that is disconnected from the pc and you can check certain power rails by connecting up case fans / optical drives, assuming the drives open / close then its safe to assume the power to them at least is ok, the 3.3v is slightly harder to diagnose and needs either a proper psu checker or volt meter of some kind.
It is very hard to diagnose dead systems without replacement parts but it does sound like something might have died if it appeared to work once and allow you to get vista installed and hasn't posted since.
Any friends who would be willing to plug your parts into their pc?

IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!! MATT YOU DIAMOND!
some how the on/off switch has lost its connection. spade connector must've come loose or something.
you cant imagine how chuffed i am!!!!

i'm just glad that nothing is broken. i couldn't sleep last night cos i was so gutted about it! lol
the PSU only arrived last week from Aria so i'm glad i didn't send it back to see if i had balls'd it up.
anyhooo the pc is now up and runnnning, just connected to the net and am updating drivers etc. now running with the 2GB of ram again which is cool too.
by the way, i have got 4GB of OCZ Gold ram arriving tomorrow to run Vista 64. should i put it in along side the current 2GB to run 6GB altogether or should i just swap them around and keep it at 4GB?
Sorted, nice one, a rodgered power switch i had one of them on one of my old cases, pc would power up / off at random which was most annoying when it decided to power up at silly o'clock in the morning and wake me up.
Sorted8)
Regarding the Ram, How many slots does your MB have? Or have you bought 2 x 2GB strips?
Its always best to keep the memory matched so i would use all the 4GB and keep the extra 2GB for your next build. It wont be long before you do another, I can tell:mrgreen:

i'm over the moon mate!
now actually replying to you from it! its a shame the switch has gone a bit tits up as its a brand new antec 900, also only arrived last week! lol i'll check it out tomorrow

watcha matt
i have 4 slots. the OCZ gold ram i've bought is indeed 2x2GB
i will definately be building another, been on the blower to my brother earlier and he's already asked me to sort him out a setup when i'm free!
definately going to start been a regular poster on this forum too8)
THANKS ONCE AGAIN EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

Why wouldn't the second RAM stick work when it was actually working though?
Strange eh
If the switch is knackered (not just a lose connector or something daft that can be repaired yourself), assuming the switch is easily removed from the case email Antec see if they can get a replacement sent out as it would be a right pain to rma a case just because of a switch.
