View Full Version : BT Infinity
Basically, we're on the option for unlimited downloads/phone calls etc. Usually get around 35MB P/S average. 8MB Upload average. Had to re-download my steam and world of warcraft twice (-.-) Since then I can't do anything at all. Web-pages take a while to load, Flash player won't download, Bittorrent just doesn't work at all. Online gaming is near impossible. Did a non flash based speedtest and got 200KB a sec.
What's the actual limit for fair usage for BT infinity? Anyone know?
I'm guessing this is most likely the reason for this.....?
Anyone got any suggestions/tips/possible symptoms? I'm sure I've been throttled..

The limit for infinity is 300gb a month now I think. They throttle heavy users so it might be just that you downloaded valot in the space of a day.
They also throttle during peak times. Bit of a skank really, we have infinity and in the evening its alot slower.:(
Edit: just tested and I'm getting 37mb/s now so its not been throttled tonight. Sometimes they slow me down though, might be just when I've been downloading alot.

Well I have just downloaded like 60GB in a day... If this is the case then I'm very annoyed lol :(

I understand the point in throttling but why take someone down from 40Mb to like 0.02Mb.
Just bring them down to 5/10Mb, at least then the internet's usable.
Be glad you have Infinity- I barely get 2.5mb/s if I'm lucky!

I'm on a good ISP thankfully (XILO) so I get a solid 4Mb/s all the time.
But 4 is hardly mind bogglingly quick, however - it's a damn sight better than 56k and having to drop internet connection every time someone wanted to use the phone.

i would phone them up. Pretty sure ofcom has some stuff to do with throttling, do to with certain limits etc.
I would say you have some sort of fault there. No way should they take you from 40 down to <1
That's pretty poor service

Did you know you don't actually have to "install" WoW? Just copy the files to another drive and run it from there :thumb:
I think the WoW install that my wife and I both use was originally installed about 5 years ago, 3 computers ago... we've just copied the directory between machines for years :D

Yep, I'm going to look into this for Steam aswell. But my internet is still knackered. Going to have to put in a call To BT. Definetly something seriously wrong here.
You get 35 mb/s?
I only get like 18 :(

Read the thread fully first mate. ;)
I've got flashplayer downloaded now, was going at 2kb a sec... Speedtest's indicating 30MB Download, 5MB upload. Seems okay. Will go on black ops later and see.

Distance from street cabinet will effect speeds.
Since it's VDSL it drops off at a much quicker rate.
I only get ADSL atm (4Mb)
If I got ADSL2+ I would get 9-11Mb
If I got Infinity I would get 9-11Mb just because of the distances.
My street cabinet is 2x closer to me than the exchange, but VDSL gets slower 2x faster than ADSL2+.
So it's 6 and 2 1/3 really.
:o English please
And yeah I read the thread just surprised he normally got 35 mb/s.
Seems to be fixed now. Definetly was throttled. Hopefully won't happen again.. I'm planning to fill a 500GB drive with films lol :weeee
Its bt, course it will be throttled again..
I was going to sign up, but decided my 4mb was actually capable of downloading more than 22mb with bt... As it has no noticable traffic shaping.

BT throttle usage for p2p they make this clear in their terms and conditions and im pretty sure thats how steam and blizzard get you to download their clients
from steam support:
Known Issues with Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Important:
If you notice that your Steam connection only has issues during certain hours of the day (usually in the evenings between 5pm and 11pm), it is probable that your ISP is blocking or "shaping" your connection. Please test your connection at other hours of the day and contact your ISP directly if you believe this is causing the connection issue.
There are several ISPs which block ports required for the proper operation of Steam and Steam games:
012.net (Steam traffic blocked)
Bluewin (Firewall blocks Steam from provider side - must be disabled through provider's service portal)
Dutch Telecom (Steam traffic blocked)
ISPFree (Steam traffic blocked)
Micronet Broadband (Steam traffic blocked)
TalkTalk (bandwidth throttling reduces download speeds)
