View Full Version : Connecting Xbox 360 to Router.

The above sounds easy, or so I though.
I'm trying to help a friend, he's trying to connect his 360 Arcade to his router using a 4m Patch Ethernet cable.
His router is the Sky Sagem model.
We've connected the cable to either end, tested the connection on the Xbox 360 and it said it couldn't retrieve an IP; we reset the router, same issue. We tried a static IP, still couldn't connect.
We got the laptop and connected that with the same cable in the same port, it worked flawlessly.
So after an entire hour of debugging I'm still no further forward with why the Xbox is just refusing to connect.
Please don't make any "Because Xbox 360 sucks" comments - It's not my Xbox, I didn't buy it, it's just unhelpful...
So, anybody got any ideas?

are all the network settings on the 360 set to auto ?

Try the xbox with a different router and/or cable just to rule out any compatibility issues.

I've tried auto and manual - read the OP fully.

Doesn't have a different router and/or cable.
The router and cable worked fine with his laptop though.
Is it a crossover cable rather than a straight cat5 cable? If one or both of the router or xbox isn't autosensing, then it won't work with a crossover cable.. Worth checking at least :)

It's all in the OP Aaron.
But thanks anyway.
You just say patch cable - I've heard MANY people say that referring to both xover and standard cat5 so thought it was worth asking.. :)
i use to have the sky internet with that model of modem if i remember there was certin ports that could not be used "effectively" with out the firm ware upgrade because they was originally going to be using them for different purposes but i think the plan caved in. and have you checked the firewall on the routor and allowed the ports need for Xbox live.
edit// and have you tryed to conenct the xbox to the laptop via Ethernet and then bridging the connections on the laptop so that the laptop is sharing the internet to the xbox to make sure at the xbox is working correctly.

Port allowance isn't a problem - it's not even getting an IP yet.
No point trying to fix the firewall when it's not even reaching the router properly.
Phone the technical support?
Well, if you know everything else is good, and you're sure you've checked everything and its all correct, then the only thing it could be is a dodgy network socket on the xbox....
If its banned form Live does it still connect to a router?
Have you reset the Xbox?
any good?

Is it brand new? If not how were you connecting to it before?
To connect your Xbox to the internet using wires you’ll need an Ethernet cable. This is the yellow cable that came with your Sky Broadband set-up kit.
Plug the Ethernet cable into one of the sockets at the back of your Sky Broadband wireless router and put the other end into your Xbox 360.
To check the connection is working select ‘ System Settings’ from the ‘ my X-box menu’ then select Network Settings. A wired network connection should appear with a tick in the top right hand corner. Press A to select this, then test X-box Live Connection, and then press A to confirm.
That’s it. You’re ready to go.
Any update on this Toon?
Was it a 2nd hand XBox?

I gathered that many years ago :P

He said he had an old Xbox 360 that he never hooked up to the internet, but that got the RRoD and he got a new console from MS but it doesn't seem to connect.
Sounds like BS, probably banned.
I fail to see MS not checking the xboxes that leave the repairs.

Doubt it, to get banned you need to use some hardcore hacks (savegame or JTAG).
It took me a while to explain what an IP was and why the Ethernet cable would not work in the ADSL port.
I doubt he knows how to hack.
Maybe he was unlucky on one of the sweeps or something.
It should just connect, no problems, its all pretty much automated.

Is the xbox being recognised in the windows 7 network settings? Have you got a setting there to allow it to media stream?

Microsoft might have given him a refurbished console that had previously been banned (probably because it had been flashed). I doubt MS actually checks to see if a console is banned when it gets refurbished.
They wouldn't refurb a banned console though would they as it needs to opened and MS would notice.

Surely banned or not banned it would still connect to the router.
I dunno thats what i was asking as they use the Mac code (i think) that's tied to the motherboard on the ethernet port to make sure its banned.

if its banned that just means its banned from the MS network it would still get an IP from the router and be able to stream from the pc
i have to quickly skimmed over the thread I think I read it don't even get an IP
would try a new cable and try it on another connection ...take it to a friends for more testing

Depends. They would definitely know of it had been JTAG'd or had a mod chip but most flashed consoles are just disk drives loaded with custom firmware, so there is no physical evidence.
I still vote for dodgy Ethernet port.. Seems like Toonshorty has eliminated everything else as he's tested everything!
Either that, or the other guys are onto something when they say its been banned, but I don't see how that would stop it getting an IP from the router..

when xbox ban you they ban the MAC and the console serial number nothing more
a banned console can still connect to the home network an stream from other pc's
I would try a factory reset on the console if possible.. other than that if its been tested with another cable and router it has to be the ethernet socket as Aaron says
I have heard that the Sky modems have 2 ports that are not enabled (useable) so this could be why you are not getting an IP address.
Have you tried setting up a static IP address on the xbox? I would recommend doing this anyway as it makes things a lot easier when configuring the router to allow for better NAT settings on the xbox for access to xbox live
People really need to start reading the OP better.
If you assign the xbox a static IP, then plug it into the router/switch, you should be able to discover the xbox on the network, if you can discover it, then my bet would too be on a borked ethernet port, does the router have built in wireless?

Yeh this problem seems really odd. Only thing I can think of is static ip or, try direct connect to the modem if thats possible.
You may also try a restore on the router, but I can't see it being the routers problem

sounds like a dodgey network port possibly, try using a wireless xbox adapter if you can borrow one to test maybe??
They are about £25 to buy pre-owned that i have seen.
If the console was banned it would still see the network and computers on the network with no problems it just would not sign in to xbox live so i dont think this is the problem.
How old is the xbox? there is a manufactured date on the back of the xbox, if its within 3 years of manufacture its still under warranty
Connect to the router's IP, does it register it at all?
