in just going to buy a sata hdd for my m8's dell laptop and am a little unsure on the about the jumpers. any advice will be appreciated

Satas dont need any jumpers unless there is a aproblem.

thanx lynx, so it should just be a case of slotting the neww hdd in and running xp installation disc

Yeh it should, i would be sure to check about if you need a floppy with any drivers on for that SATA controller, or if the XP disc will run straight off.
