handbrake,

but i think you still need to decrypt the disc, which i can't talk about

You are on dodgy ground here as it is currently illegal to rip pre-recorded DVDs.

handbrake is fine for the conversion process... I specifically didn't mention what to rip with.

If it's you own DVD you made of family clips and what not that you would like to view on your iPhone then that's fine.

You should be more specific.

Indeed it's only copy protected and pre-recorded which you cannot.

Fair use states that you're allowed a backup copy of your DVDs as long as those copies won't violate the copyright (which if they're for personal use and not being distributed, they won't). The illegal part is backwards engineering or circumventing the copy protection on the DVDs, protection which is close to illegal in and of itself (seeing as it prevents you from exercising your rights). Bit of a tricky situation.

Strictly, Fair Use is a US Law, doesn't apply to us.

We have the concept of 'fair dealing' as described in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, but it's all a bit wooly and vague really.

I believe that as stated by others above, backing up your legally owned media for personal use is legal, but only if you do it without making any modifications whatsoever, and since basically all DVDs etc come with some form of copy protection this means that any backup which would actually work would as a result probably be illegal.

Of course the chances of the CPS actually prosecuting you for backing up media which you own legitimately is basically zero, unless you start trying to distribute these copies to others.

Obviously backing up non-protected content you own is fine.

Fair use is in UK law too...
