Buy a second-hand beast for around £400 then upgrade with decent sized SSD and stuff?
Probably not desirable 'cos warranty can be so important on a lappy... Check out Dell I guess?
Never met anyone who was disappointed with a shiny new D,E Double hockey-sticks lappy.

Nice lappy, without the ssd but with 2gb extra ram and an OS, would fit the budget :)

The Dell Inspiron's are usually pretty good. I know it's Dell but their laptop range does not seem to be overpriced like most of their desktop range. Just run a search for "dell inspirion i5 4gb" on google, I'm sure you can get it for under £600.
