View Full Version : msi p35 neo 2-fr won't boot
Hi
I've just built a PC using a Msi p35 neo 2-fr mobo with a Q6600 G0 stepping cpu, BFG Geforce 8800GT graphics and Crucial Ballistix 8500 DDR2 RAM. It's a good spec but unfortunately it doesn't POST. There are four red error lights on the mobo at startup which signify an incorrectly installed or faulty cpu. Bearing in mind you can't really insert the cpu incorrectly I'm wondering if I've got a duff 'un. Any thoughts?
Check the CPU socket for any damaged pins... they get bent very easily!

Sounds like a DOA CPU or some of the pins are bent.
Thats rediculous, 775 cpus dont have pins...
Think he might mean the pins on the board, as I did.
There are no pins on the board either.....
its a 775 BGA socket.
BGA = ball grid array.

I belive you are mistaken, it is a land grid array (LGA).
They are indeed tiny little springy pins. If one gets bent or deformed, no go for CPU.
what power supply do you have, the easiest and most effiecent way to test is to use another CPU if possible, if not RMA time :(
need bios update for quad ?

No they support the quad on delivery.
I think it's either going to be a faulty CPU or a/few bent pin(s)
Oops! Sorry guys. Thanks for your suggestions but it turns out the cpu power lead was not seated properly. Doh:lol: Cool PC tho... just ordered a Zalman to keep the graphics card quiet.
PS) There are NO pins on the CPU or motherboard (they're more like small blocks on the processor that fit into dimples on the mobo)

 at least its working now

Good choice of board, if/when you start to look at over clocking move the boot strap jumpers to 266 first, they affect the memory timings etc. If you wish to go higher then switch it to the 333 setting.
In my case I have it set to 333 and thats all I needed to do to hit 3Ghz. Didnt have to change anything else.
Tnx. I'm planning to overclock to 3GHz soon so will bear it in mind
