View Full Version : top 5 mma people of all time
Hi guys,
dunno how many people here are into there mma but I wanted to see if you could settle an argument here.
I was just wondering how you think the top 5 mma guys of all time are?
The argument is have they all fought in the UFC or not i think the ones that have not fought in the UFC are a bit overrated.
What is MMA/UFC?
Mixed Martial Arts / Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Oh right, thanks. Not a clue sorry I dislike fighting.

Just sort of started watching bits of MMA here and there, hard to disagree with your choices for 1,2 & 3. I don't really know enough to go beyond that, but Bruce Lee is the daddy and Fedor looks a beast from the clips I've seen.

Fedor is a monster, watch him against the likes of Brett Rogers (A mamoth of a man) and Hong Man Choi (a 7ft 2 man-bear) and he still beats them in an impressive manner.
He's harder than a coffin nail mate :thumb:
The thing with Fedor is to me, he never beat a big name that was at the top of his game an in the right weight class so I always wonder about him. (same with overeem right now)
Added after 2 minutes:
oh and @ el wanyneo as a NUFC fan love the joey barton comment........ he has been slightly better this season

There arent that many 'big names' in strikeforce as they all get drafted by UFC & WEC.
'big names' dont always mean big fights and big named fighters can under perform too (look at penn vs edgar recently).
and that is why i believe that is why fedor never came to the ufc though so he didn't have to fight the big names, he could just stay as a big fish in a small pond, maybe he would have done really well against the ufc guys but maybe not seems like we will never know

I've seen the fight against Hong Man Choi (that guy doesn't look real), he absolutely mauls him. Would love to see him against some of the UFC big guns, just to see once and for all

more to do with the politics of being a UFC fighter, the UFC want the fighters to go on talk shows, expo's, press conferences and sign away thier namesake for merchandise - whereas Fedor just wants to turn up on the night, beat someone up and go home again.
yeah scottmac he mauls a guy with an mma record of 3 fights and 1 win
both parties have to agree to fight for it to happen - Choi probably fancied his chances due to the obvious size differences and Fedor wanted a challenge

Like I said, I've only ever seen bits so have no idea who has what record, but mauling a 7ft 2 Korean at least looks good, even if it turns out he's not the greatest opponent.
I've always enjoyed Boxing/MMA etc.
People I enjoy watching in MMA are:
Anderson Silva
Mirko Cro Cop
Wanderlei Silva
Fedor Emilianenko
Chuck Liddell
All are excellent to watch and have held titles in their respective divisions.
hall of fame post :)
shame to see Liddell reture but at least hes raking it in as executive of ufc business development
ok my top 5 are
Anderson Silva
royce gracie
Matt Hughes
GSP
Chuck Liddell
honourable mentions to fedor and couture ...and a few others i cant think of right now
Matt Hughes is a good shout, always good to watch and quite a versatile fighter
the ufc also want to monopolise your career once you are under contract. people like overeem and fedor enjoy competing in the likes of k1 and samba tournaments respectively and the ufc would remove their rights to do so.
the strikeforce heavyweight division is good and the tournament that has just been announced will hopefully be epic.
Actuallly Uyr thats only half true, with fedor they would have made him the highest paid fighter for one fight and let him carry on in other tounements, but they (fedors agent) wanted half of the ufc. this is because fedors agent part owns M-1.
Out of interest, why do a lot of peole say Bruce Lee is/was the daddy ?
Sure, he was a great film fighter and choreographer but he was never a world renowned champion, never actually won anything like say, Chuck Norris did.
Not quite a correct analogy but you could say he was the Jesse owens of his time, excellent but would get it handed to him now by average modern day athletes.
Personally, though not answering the OP, i think Jackie Chan would do Bruce Lee with little effort if it came down to it :D
Oh the reason most people say that Bruce Lee is the daddy is because for the sport he is/was the daddy he was the person that came up with the idea of mixing martial arts to make one that will really work in a fight, or at least thats what i belive happened.
Bruce Lee developed the concept of mixed martial arts and dubbed the concept "Jeet Kune Do" which means "The way of the intercepting fist".
The idea was originally founded by Huo Yuanjia but later expanded and developed by Bruce Lee, who many consider (myself included) as the father of mixed martial arts.
"absorb what is useful, discard what is useless"

He's often thought of as the father of MMA because he was one of the first people to work seriously on taking the best elements of the various formal martial arts and combining them into a new, 'mixed' system. His main philosophy was "the style of no style" i.e as BigIan said keep the most effective parts of each school but don't be limited by them.

Chuck norris on Bruce Lee:
Lee, pound for pound, might well have been one of the strongest men in the world, and certainly one of the quickest. Whether doing one-handed, two-finger push-ups, or horizontally holding up a 125-pound barbell, Lee was impressively strong for his size, especially at only 140-145 pounds.
However, many today don’t realize he never competed professionally. If he had, I believe he would have been a world champion.

Perhaps now, but when Bruce was actually alive, he wouldn't have had a chance :P.
