View Full Version : blue screening lappy... ntfs.sys
Got the sister-in-law's lappy here... XP, blue screens on boot up, even in safe mode.
Also blue screens when booting from CD  Just after the "Starting windows" message on the blue background.
Error after safe mode and cd booting is the same and states :
STOP 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF89BE6DC, 0xF89BE3DB, 0xF817EF81)
ntfs.sys Address F817EF81 base at F812F000
safe mode loads mup.sys and after that loads 2 AVG related .sys files then blue-screens
hard drive borked ??

sounds like the HD to me
is the HD found in bios ?
hdd detected fine in BIOS.
it's a Tosh Satellite Pro L10 btw :)
Run the makers test utility from a standalone CD
Had this problem a few before - its almost always turned out to be the ram.. If its doing it even when booting off a cd, then I would guess at ram this time too.
Can you try a couple of different sticks in different slots? And check your ram voltages?

seems Toshiba don't make one  Will have a look at some recovery stuff tomorrow (knoppix, ubcd, etc)

Cheers for the idea, lappy has 2 sticks of 256mb - tried it with just 1 stick, blue screen, tried it with the other, blue screen (normal, safe, and cd). At least it's eliminated the RAM :D

Tosh are so annoying to fix i hate them usually have most issues with them
have you tried the HD in a different machine? see if it boots

Try Hiren's boot CD. It has just about everything you will ever need. All the disk utilities are there under the DOS utilities then:-
Boot it to XP and run the Bluescreen utility and load the dmp from the disk. This utility not only lets you see the BS as it was, it also shows the content of the dump in a readable form so you can see what it was doing when it crashed.
If you need help with the dump, PM a copy to me or post a link to it and I'll check it for you.
cheers all, will be having another "play" with it this eve
Had this problem once and fixed it with a chkdsk /r
Might work in this case x
quick update...
ram is fine, either stick in either slot produces the same error.
Tried the hard disk in a 2nd lappy (HP) and got the same ntfs blue screen booting off cd.
Trying a few tools on the Hiren's... SMART is okay, Tosh hdd util says the disk is fine, surface scan 100% ok...
Guess I'm gonna have to try fiddling with MBR's, or just go for a reinstall :(
shame I can't get it booted to a prompt in order to run chkdsk

good m8 well done
And if you had booted the Hiren's into XP you can run CHKDSK on it from that.
