Im reconditioning an ACER lappy, its a P4 1.6 or something similar (centrino). What should i put on it? I need to spray paint the exterior, and am going to put on Ubuntu and xp, should i use nLite xp and full 7.04 ubuntu?

nLite XP, taking all of the drivers off that you don't need, slipstream the laptop drivers. I'd go for openSUSE 10.3 rather than ubuntu.

The thing is that im used to Ubuntu, but if there is one that is considerably faster than the other, i will take it, all i want is a quick system for web browsing that if hibernating, will load back up in about 30 secs.

hmm, i've never compared speeds before. openSUSE is just my personal fave :D

recondition batteries? Usually discharging them fully and them recharging them several times sorts them out.

If the bios is an 'AWARD' Bios you can hack it with this tool
