View Full Version : Good PC2-6400 for moderate overclocking
So I assembled a system with a system with an e8200, asus p5bse and 2gb aria pc2-6400 and I'm looking to buy some better RAM, because I get the feeling that it's likely whats limiting the over clocking.
5% OC is stable enough, but at 10% I get BSOD as soon as windows starts. Ideally I'd like to get up to about 3.4 or 3.5Ghz (from 2.66) which works out about 437.5Mhz (at 8x) or 875Mhz at DDR.
So.... can anyone recommend (from experience or you've seen a good review) some good PC2-6400 that will comfortably run at 400-450Mhz? (i.e. DDR of 800-900) I'm looking for a 4gb (2x2gb) kit, and hopefully don't want to spend much more than £70.
I've seen some corsair cas 5 sets, but the reviews haven't been brilliant. Is OCZ RAM any good?
Cheers

I have these #26802 they have an EPP profile of 500Mhz 5.5.5.15.35.2 @ 2.3v
Though I have run mine at 450 4.4.4.12.35.2@2.2v with out issue

Best memory by far bang for buck. most people i know has this stuff and i got this running at 900mhz with 4-4-4-11. @2.10v
see my sig for rest of pc spec ;)

Beat yah too it!
same as above :) mine runs 900 @ 4,4,4,12 2.2v

I have the GeIL Black Dragon Cas 4 without looking (not at home) it's around 900 @ 4, 4, 4, 12 @ 2.1v... 2x1 GB but a friend has the 2x2GB and has it at the same speed as me... I think 2.2v on his though...
Only thing is, it doesn't come with heat sinks, and does get quite warm... Do heatsinks on ram really make that much difference? I would think it would help with a fan pointed at the RAM, as it's a smoother surface for the air to flow over, but if you don't have a fan aimed at it, does it really help?
Yeah, patriot looks good - but am I better getting 4x1Gb or 2x2Gb? (I have 4 slots)
if your board has a max of 4gb then 4 x 1gb is good if it's supports 8gb then get 2 x 2gb
incase you wanna max the mem out later ;)

Are you running a 64 bit OS or planning to?
It is possible to use 4Gb but can be troublesome on 32 bit os

i have 4 x 1gb on a dual boot vista ultimate 32bit / winxp pro 32bit . yes they wont see the full 4g , but not had any probs

Thats good, I have heard some people having serious issues with a smiliar config, although mainly on older systems

It is a little pointless having 4GB if using the 32bit OSs if you have a graphics card with 512MB or 1GB ram, as the OS maps anything over 3GB for that... also, if you have certain TV tuner cards, and I think certain soundcards (X-Fi with the "X-RAM").... would it not run just as well with 3GB but have to be 2x1GB and 2x512MB to use dual channel for all of it?
@ GM8 What size is the RAM on your Grfx card and what other stuff do you have in there? Just curious as to how much of your 4GB is useable (I've been looking at getting another 2GB of RAM while it's so cheap, even though I use XP Pro 32bit)...

have 512mb on the 8800gt , prob dont need more than 2gig but the price at the moment made it too tempting . good thing is that all 4 sticks do 900mhz@4,4,4,12 prime stable so no speed loss
using the onboard sound on the giga board
Think I've decided on the 4gb (2x2gb) version of the Patriot mentioned above - the only thing I need to double check is the voltage. My motherboard only seems to do 1.8v or 1.9v - will this affect the overclockability of the memory?
Yes, 2.1 is the preferable voltage for the memory. Look for a bios update?

I'm on the newest bios already, maybe just a limitation of the board? Will memory such as
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR2/DDR2+800+%28PC6400%29/Patriot+4GB+PC2-6400+C5+Extreme+Performance+%282x2GB%29+?productId =26803
run on 1.9v alright?
It will run at `1.9v, but it will not necisarily give you the best timing at a lower voltage.
So if I only have 1.9v, will the memory run at the full 800mhz?
The aria ram doesn't seem to want to run any higher than 667mhz, surely there must be some RAM that runs at 800mhz if they market the board as supporting PC2-6400 ?
Yes this ram will run at 800, as long as you set it correctly, but the timings wont be as tight as if it had more voltage.
Cheers, thanks for the help. I just ordered the 2x1Gb CAS4 Patriot set; I was getting sick of Vista - so back to XP and it's 2Gb ram limit, but 2gb should be fine for a while yet.

@ 1.9v , 5,5,5,16 @ 800mhz should be no prob
Just out of interest, how has the 2Gb Aria pc2-6400 been working for anyone else? Has anyone got decent performance out of them? (I know this is a daft question for unbranded ram)

It's not unbranded I thought, isn't it A-Data? Not as big in Europe or the states as it is in Asia, but CPC got some huge overclocks out of it, and highly recommended it when DDR2 was more expensive...
I bought the Patriot 2x1gb pc2-6400 kit, but it still shows up as pc2-5300 667mhz.
I tried changing the RAM setting in the bios from 'auto detect speed' to 800mhz, but then it wouldn't boot. I reset the CMOS and its working again at 667mhz.
I think I might need to edit the CAS settings, but I'm not sure what settings to use because the maximum voltage my motherboard will give memory is 1.9v.
Attached are some screens of what CPUZ says is happening. Anyone know what kind of settings I should use to get them going at 800mhz? Cheers

You need to set the memory timings to 5-5-5-5-15 i believe, under your voltage, with the ram speed at 800, see if that works.
Looking at your memory, it looks like its already overclocked, unless its unlinked?
looking at those screenies its the "Tras" setting that is probably causing the problem as its set to 10 @ 667mhz but needs to be 15 for 800mhz, go into the bios and manually set the timings for the appropriate memory timing setting in the bios as per "JEDEC#3" in this pic
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/6466/memory2ov9.th.jpg (http://img138.imageshack.us/my.php?image=memory2ov9.jpg)
Thanks mac, but looking at my bios - there isn't anywhere to change 'tras' or 'trc', are they usually with the CAS settings?
(If it means anything, I'm using an ASUS P5B-SE)
Have a quick look in this thread http://forums.aria.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3411 it tells you how to overclock a P5B deluxe, which is the same as my P5B E+ and vanilla P5B, soooo it could well be the same as your P5B-SE, no need to go the whole hog and overclock it, but it might help finding the settings your after. The memory timings are found under the "Advanced > Northbridge" settings on my P5B's
Cheers, thats a useful thread. Seems that I don't have all the memory settings you have, just the first 4 I think.
I might play about with some settings later on, but the temptation to just play a game might be over powering.

In theory that's good, but having 4 sticks of RAM puts the northbridge under more stress as it tries to deal with all the addressing, which can limit overclocking headroom.
