So due to the festive season annual migration f family to our place, the office takes its usual role of jun... er storage room meaning my lappy is the only servicable pc in the house. so of course it breaks...
the power jack broke so it won't charge. it's been on the way out for a while but i haven't repaired it yet as it involves TOTAL stripdown...

That's going to be tricky with one of those "grainy" laptops. Makes it hard to see what you are doing.

Hasn't happened to anyone else that I know of....... and this is mikeyuk3 (http://forums.aria.co.uk/member.php?u=19945) we're talking about XD
You had to strip you whole laptop down to get to the power plug?
Also, isn't that the hardest way to get into a laptop, I've always gone in through the bottom.
I've always gone in through the bottom.
Oh yes? :surprised:

Hahahaha! @smifis.
Anyway, the power socket is on the mainboard and soldered right through and to get it out means everything has to come out

No, since it was NYE last night and my head is still pretty broken. No handling of soldering irons for me today.
lol are you sure you dont want to try xD let me guess if you get hold of a solerding iron your try to solder a cat!

That was a hilarious comment - but it explains a lot ;)
But also, having to strip down the entire laptop to get to a power socket to resolder it is quite common. I've found Acer ones are particularly annoying for positioning them like that!

I too have a loptop that needs taking apart every now and then, its a Fujitsu Siemens). The cpu fan / cooling ducts gets clogged with dust and the laptop then gets rather warm and keeps shutting down. Then its just a case of removing the fan assembly and cleaning it.
This is done by removing the keyboard etc and going in from the top (no bottom entry for me ).

It's true mikey, you are a bit dopey :P
I've never worked on an Acer laptop so thanks for hte heads up. On on a few ASUS laptops, it was pretty standard. webbooks (heads a bit fuzzy) are a breeze
Yeah - some Acer ones can be a pig to get to.. Although I think the most annoying ones to work on that i've come across have been certain Vaio laptops. I replaced a hard drive in one a while ago, and it needed pretty much the entire top half removing to get to it!!

The operation is complete!
SHE RIDES!
the fuzzy head cleared and i finished the job off, but now it won't recognise the adapter as a proper dell one. it'll power on, but won't charge... :(
probably damaged the psu ID chip when the the socket broke...
Didn't think there was some sort of id chip in the psu?
If the battery has been flat for a while, it will take some time before it recognises it and start charging.

no only a few days.
i have discovered that Dell put ID chips in so that the laptop can determine if the PSU is correct.
they have a 3 pin conncection to the lappy, + - and a data line.
the laptop gives me a warning that the PSU cannot be identified and so won't charge the battery.
here's info about the id chip: a couple of posts down
