A tracking program that will come in handy if your PC/laptop gets stolen. It looks quite promising, anyone used it?

What do you mean?

There is a better program called LoJack, but has a licence cost. I think Prey looks quite good for a free program. :)

as in, there is a program that can externally access your computer and take pics, send out keylogging etc...isnt this what prey says it is?

I was told by a forensics guy when we got burgled and our computer equipment stolen that they had recently caught a thief who had stolen an apple mac when the owner used some kind of application like this.

Personally rather than phone the police i'd rather find out their address and go round there retrieve my belongings myself, look on their face would be priceless.

this video can show you some things that you wouldn't have though of with this kind of software: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksiIo&feature=player_embedded (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4oB28ksiIo&feature=player_embedded)

in a quick run down.
if you have no passwords to log on = data safer
no passwords on internet connections = data safer
auto complete passwords = safer from keylogers.
lock a pc = it will be formatted.
lock the bios = it will be sold, and keep on moving around or be scrapped. = data lost.

I would rather that my machine was completely bricked than people got access to my data. I have good backups anyway.

If any thief stole your computer stole your computer they would think it's broken as they don't recognise the OS lol.

if you totally lock down the pc, then it will be formatted.

if you only lock the data you want hidden and keep it deep in the files thus it wouldn't normally be found with out knowing where it is, then your data has more chance of surviving.

you could install your own keylogger, no?

Can't you password protect your Hard drive from the BIOS? That'd secure your data.

i thought if you did that, they would just wipe the drive

This deserves a classic :D

I think you need to jump ahead 2 - 3 mins before the story really starts from memory

Seen it a while ago. Very very funny. Its worth starting from the beginning though.

Yeah, but most people back up, so it doesn't matter. If the data is that important, you'll have several backups. :)
