one thread is enough Terry :)

The seller on ebay is talking complete rubbish, imo. Do you get anything at all, bios screen, flash screen? Anything?

Which model number? Which auctionnumber ;) ?

Also, how did it die exactly? Is it working at all? Is there a restore partition/can you access it?

sorry about 2 inserts

i got the laptop from ebay,
there was a few screws from base missing,
the keyboard clips were not tight to laptop,

i got the laptop,it was full of his stuff,
it had about 10 items coming on the bar at base of screen

so i decided to try and reformat hard drive, which was ok
and reinstall xp pro using an original xp disc

it installed fine
towards the end of the updates it would not restart
no life at all
mains or battery

it is a ibm thinkpad r40 2618

the seller has said that he is a windows certified engineer
and says that i have done the damage myself
as the thinkpad will only run by ibm xp already installed on the laptop
the fresh install of xp has caused the problem

i actually rang ibm tech dept and they have stated that it is perfectly fine to reinstall any OS you choose,

Sounds very dodgy to me - I would say you want to send it back and get a refund, and tell him what IBM has said. If he refuses, raise a dispute with ebay, and also speak to your credic card company if you paid by credit card. Get the money back from them, and then he'll have Visa chasing him which is a lot more scary than a person!

I'd also ask him for his "certified engineer" number and report him to wherever he got it from, somehow.. :)

"Microsoft Certified System Engineer + CCN 1 + 2 and 30 years in the business"

this is what he says he is,

i have sent him an email from ibm tech dept,

they state that i can install any OS i choose on any of their systems,

i have now put a paypal claim in for not as advertised item,

ebay were a waste of time again,

Personally I'd never buy a laptop off ebay, let alone a used one.

I'd just raise a dispute saying it was faulty - e.g. very slow etc and now it doesn't work. If its still within the 7 days and you bought it BIN then you should be able to return it quibble free.
