... OK so I just got a nasty bill for £150 for going over my fair-usage policy and am now looking to move providers (not sure who my current provider is, i think its a fairly small company / my mum signed up with them). we currently like in Shrewsbury and are getting around 7MB/s D/L on an ADSL2 line.

I've looked at a couple different companies and everything seems to be BT or SKY or TalkTalk.

now my dad was previously with Pipex and we have never had an issue / over-usage bill from them before but I'm now told you can't go with Pipex any more so I was passed across to a different company called Opal.

Now Opal can give me a business broadband deal -
OPAL line rental @ £13.45 per month
OPAL Broadband @ £10 per month
Credit of £5 per month for the first 12 months (this is a limited time offer only and expires at the end of today)
Please adjust the price as required for call builders stated below.

Total cost: £18.45 Per Month for the first 12 months and £23.45 thereafter

I was told this is a contention ratio of 20:1 & that there is no download limits and no fair usage policy, (the gent said it used to be 100GB but now there is none and he said he personally downloads about 250gb per month)

does anybody have any experience of using this company?

TalkTalk, Carphone and Tiscally are the ones to stay away from.

I am currently with Plus.net

Very good provider and i have had no downtime.

They are UK based so no :censored: when you talk to them... No person from India is what I'm getting to here.

The thing with Opal,,, Well it is practically TalkTalk.

They are horrid to stop calling you, They try and get you to upgrade 24/7 .....

Also they change the TOS all the time and don't notify you.

One example is that they change the *Unlimited* broadband to 10GBs a month

And yes they did't tell me or anyone about it. Thus equalling a massive BILL at the end.

( Witch I still haven't paid and won't ! )

So if you want to be screwed over. Yes go with TalkTalk...

Much as we moan about Virgin Media, and their various problems.

They do NOT charge extra with their fair use policy, they throttle the speed back, so there is no danger of you getting an inflated bill

Tiscalis business products are actually very good it is only their home products which are not great.

We supply Tiscali LLU connections to numerous customers and the quality has been excellent.

the part where you said you supply tiscali makes me feel your opinion may be slightly biased ;)

I would imagine ANY business package would be far superior to a home package, especially w.r.t. customer service and fixing connection issues. I would assume it would come with an actual SLA too  :D

As far as home broadband is concerned, for ADSL2+ I would definately recommend BeThere, however the business package you have listed above looks excellent! Worth enquiring about static IP's too if you plan on hosting anything at home.

Talk Talk are superb. Erm, Jackster - Talk talk don't have a 10GB per month package FTR. Phone support is what you expect from most companies. Better than BT but it isn't great. Their forums are great for sorting things out, it's manned by staff who can do almost anything to your package/line/account.

You can also opt out of marketing calls...it's not rocket science.

thats what i thought when looking at the package, plus i dont need any of the extra options.

Trust me if they didnt provide a good service and good quality connections we would not be using them, it would be more hassle than its worth to do that.

We supply, install and maintain telephone PABX systems (namely the IP office) - but we also provide business broadband to our customers, as well as line rental and least cost routing solutions.

TalkTalk, Carphone and Tiscally are the ones to stay away from.

Aren't they all the same thing?

Likewise Pipex.

Certainly something to avoid if there are other options.

There was a piece on the radio today about TalkTalk getting it in the neck from Ofcom for appalling customer service.

TalkTalk wanted to get on air to tell people how to get the best out of broadband over Christmas. When the BBC asked if it would also talk about Ofcom's complaints, TalkTalk suddenly found that it had no one available.

I can confirm that while TalkTalk's internet service may be fine when you don't have problems, it is rubbish at dealing with technical problems. It took them a year to acknowledge an obvious line problem on my phone line and to send in BT to fix it.

Their "back office," billing and so on, is also dreadful.

They will fail to take your money and will then send in the debt collectors because you haven't paid. This happened to me even before the current fuss. Radio 4 reeled off far more horrifying sagas.

if the number of grumblings about home broadband packages continues at the current pace, and it will, if it doesnt get worse as all these extra things like tv's and games consoles consume more and more bandwidth and ISP's whine more and more about it.... Then i could see your business taking a healthy shift in the direction of specialists supplying business grade broadband to homes

Nah, there's hundreds of small broadband providers, all those crappy mobile phone companies that thought they had the experience/ability to break into this area of the communications business ... and were seriously mistaken

Talktalk + Tiscali + Pipex/Bulldog are ALL merged and are now operating as one big company using the name TalkTalk. TalkTalk is owned by the Carphone warehouse so Carphone Warehouse and TalkTalk are pretty much the same. I have been with Tiscali and I have had my internet automatically changed to TalkTalk after the merge. To be honest I've never had any problems with Tiscali apart from their slow internet speeds I've had much better customer service from Tiscali than Virgin Media (my first ISP). Also, I am some times put on the Pipex servers when I connect to the internet, some other times I'm put on the old Tiscali servers and very rarely I'm put on TalkTalk servers.

I don't know much about Opal but if they have something to do with Pipex then they are probably part of the TalkTalk merge and I wouldn't be hesitate to join them if they are offering you a good deal.

My TalkTalk business package - LLU broadband, Free calls to the UK 24/7, uncapped download, £26/month is superb. I was with Zen prviously, who were great but slow speeds - my d/l was around 3-4 Mbps. Switch to TalkTalk and now it's around 14Mbps, never goes below 10 Mbps. Rock solid and reliable.

Their customer service, however, is total shite!

LOL ... it does seem we can't have good service/experiences on both halves of the equation !
