View Full Version : Windows Home Server
Hi All
Im using the trial of this at the moment and i have to say it looks quite good!
Its based on Windows small business server 2003 so you can still do the usual tasks such as internet hosting and remote desktop.
But the great features of it hide in the add-ons. They make it so simple to host a website or image gallery, Or even sync a folder to your flikR account!
Check out http://www.wegotserved.co.uk/windows-home-server-add-ins/ for a quick run-down of what you can do with it.
The only problem im having is installing my X800 drivers. It just wont have it!
Now the question is will microshaft bring out a 2008 version to go with server 2008 out next week.
I could just about afford home server from Aria (£80:sad:) but no way am i going to be able to get 2008, Estimated at about £500!:|
Nuts:O

Have you not read about the corruption issues?

Oh jesus!
I have now! Thanks for that.
Might have to hold out a little longer untill they sort it out:sad:

its been going on for a few weeks already, with no signs of a fix :O
Bloody hell. And they expect us to pay for the software!?
If i bought a car and say the cup holder came off. Would i live with it? No, I would take it back. Microsoft should recall all of them as its a fault. Idiots!
How the hell can Microsoft get this wrong, data corruption on a file server, lol. Thats like the NHS releasing a vaccination for polio and then telling everyone 'whoops, it actually gives you polio'.

Its the worse thing that could happen to the software!

@M4T VW
did you loose anything or have you been lucky?
Im not using it yet, Just having a play with what it can do.
Ive spent all day trying to set up my All in wonder X800 card on it. Full of errors and it just wont install the software!
Also as it has a TV tuner ive seen no mention of that on the PC at all. Nothing to set it up or anything:sad:

Ok, thats good then, personaly I will stick to my Server 2003 standard edition with a legit Key
I have a copy of Server 2003 but home server seems a little more user friendly for me.
I love the look of the add-ins and basic 2003 cant do that.
Having a nightmare installing the ATI drivers!
wonderlust
24-02-08, 20:58
have you tried exracting the drivers and just using the .inf?
Yup. Im unsure what card i have really. I bought a All in wonder X800, It says that on the box (OEM not retail). On the manual it says 2006 PCI express edition, Powered by X1300
There are seperate drivers for all 3 of those and none of them work. They install but when you try to use the other ATI software if says (Not correct device driver" or somthing:sad:

Have you tried GPU-Z?
For those that haven't heard of it it is CPU-Z for graphics cards.
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
Well ive nearly got it installed. But using the stupid catalyst software version 5.4 when the current version is 8.2!!!
But the "Ati WDM TV Driver" installs but has a yellow mark over it and it says the device cannot start.
I really dont know what to do. 2003 is based on XP but the XP drivers just wont have it or any of the current drivers anyway. 5.4 was made in about 2005!
How about turning off driver signing then it will be forced to install.

Strange, I know its not in the same league as your card, but I have an X300SE (bought for under a £10 on Fleabay) in one of my servers, and the drivers installed with out a hitch,
Just a quick thought, have you .NET installed? The ATI drivers are a pig if you attempt to install them before .NET
How about turning off driver signing then it will be forced to install.
It installs them ok...But they are not the correct ones for it.
I have installed net 1.1 2 and 3. Didnt seem to do anything.
It seems everyone on the net has the same problem and no one gets to the bottom of it. I knew i should have gone Nvidia...
Im thinking its somthing to do with IRQ's..but not sure what...
Found my problem

Yes, More M$ beta software:twisted:
Thats the one!
Ive not solved it yet. The link went to the ATI FAQ just saying "we are working a fix for this problem" So its not just me!
I found out last night that windows home server is built around Vista now and not XP. So i will have to give the vista drivers a try.
All fun and games:|
Good luck! I have a ATI X800GT AIW and had problems installing in Vista... got the card to work but the tv tuner wasnt detected in Media Centre :(
Jon
How long has this card been out? They should have a fix by now?
Well the Vista drivers didnt work but it did let me install the XP package without any errors!
All installs fine but when i restart it says " Catalyst control centre cannot be used with this driver version" or somthing like that. I dont know why though becuase its in the same driver package and its on the disk!
Kinda messed up my plan really as i wanted to stream the TV to my laptop:sad:
I'll give it a go tonight, see what I can do.

It seems to me to be very strange.
Microsoft has been making Server OS for years, what on earth did they do to make this mess?
Its not as if this is a ground upward new system, its built on old technology.
Hiya,
I'm just installing home server on my media centre (using a new hdd) so I'll give it a go when it's finished... mite not be till sunday/monday though.
I'm using the RC version not the released version,
Thanks Jon, Good luck with it!
The X800 has an analog tuner too...It seems to have installed that but i cant get the software installed on the PC to try it!!!:|
Right,
I've got it installed, installed the connector software on to my laptop... and thats all I've had time to do. I will carry on later on during the weekend.
How many restarts did it do to get going??!! whats that about!
Looks brill, I like it lol

Jon, What version of catalyst did you use?
Can you confirm that it installed lots of other things too like ATI WDM Teletext, ATI WDM Tuner, ATI WDM AVSTREAM etc.
Those will be found in the sounds and devices part of device manager.
Cheers
Mat:|
I didnt get round to putting any ATI software on, I just used the built in drivers, but as soonas I get in on Sunday I will put on the ATI stuff.
Gave up on WHS but i would really like to use it if i could get the X800 to work!
Now installed the server 2008 trial...and still having problems installing!
To hell with ATI:mad:
And to hell with microsoft:mad:
To hell with all this crap:mad:
Clean install of Vista Ultimate 32 and!.....
Still doesnt work!
Installs the first driver ok but doesnt install the secondary or any others.
The catalyst setups dont work properly, Always errors:mad:
Still not sure what driver to be installing...
When i booted vista for the first time it had installed "radeon X800" drivers but its a all-in-wonder X800 card, And on the manual it says "powered by X1300" So not sure.
Whats the cheapest Nvidia TV tuner card?:(

So it is an X800 not an X1XXX card.
but that doesn't help with your driver issue of course...
Nope. Both X800 and AIW X800 driver dont work...

They are aware of the errors as it has them on the site...But not doing anything about it!

thats dire, who do they think they are Creative Labs?
Hi Mat.
I'm trying to install the drivers off the cd, but it just seems to hang. I also had a problem installing them onto Vista 32, so I went back to XP Home and it works fine :(
Jon
Update:
I've got the software from the cd installed.
All the drivers have installed fine.
But at the moment I cant get it to do anything...
No TV, no DVD, no radio :(
Jon
Yup. Thats as far as i can get!:|
I'll have another play around with it tonight and see what I can do...
Cheers
Dont worry about it too much though. Ive tried every trick in the book and it just wont work:sad:

I assume you have tried the compatibility modes?
I was going to try that tonight if I get chance as I'm going to be doing a bit of system building (swapping my motherboard for a different one)...
Jon
I assume you have tried the compatibility modes?
Yup. Although that has never worked for me on any system before!
Ive not used it properly before so you can still try that Jon:mrgreen:
Will do as soon as I get in from work. Shame it wont work, looks like a pretty good peice of software.
After I'm done with this experiment I'm going to put my new 160gb SATA2 (which I got for 20quid) drive in to my main pc. :)
Jon
I dont think its going to work :( I've been doing a bit of googling, seems that ATi arent going to update the software for Vista/Home server :(Jon
I thought you might say that!
Well thats me stuffed then:sad:
I now need a TV card that has server 2003 drivers to be able to run it.:|
The X800 has external TV inputs. Do you know how to view them as i could use an old digibox i have laying about as the TV tuner...
I dont know why im trying to set up the TV anyway as my wireless G wouldnt take it!
lol, thats a man thing! hmm, good luck! I've just wiped the hard drive I was using, and am now installing good old XP Home SP2 :)
Installing XP pro at the moment to test the card. I think it will work so its down to home server really:|
HA! Just tried running the installer from the disk as have the same error as home server "Please install standard VGA driver and run setup again":O
Hmm. Seems XP doesnt like it either.
Ive noticed a few things. I need to install the display drivers for the AIW X800 GT..The GT version!
Other then that the ATI software doesnt seem to install on XP very well. Ive just installed MMC and rebooted and it says "MMC does not seem to be installed"....Ive just bloody installed it!
Must have a different card to me as mine is an X800GT AIW... Works fine on good old XP :)
Thats what mins says it is too...lol
In device manager Jon. Has it installed lots of stuff in the "sound, video and game controllers"?
The ati driver doesnt like other graphics cards installed. If you have any onboard graphics. or any nvidia cards installed, i would suggest unistalling them first, and trying again. Took me days to get my x800 AIW installed because i had a 7950GT in another pci-e slot. They still dont like working together and i've had to build a nice shiny new media centre.
Yup, everything shows up in device manager, i'll take a proper look when I get home
Thanks Jon
Totem-Nope no other cards installed and the P5B doesnt have onboard grahpics...Well i cant see a vga port for it anyway!:|
Sorry, I didnt get round to checking last night. I was a bit busy overclocking :) I need a beefier processor now to go with my 3gigs of RAM.
Anyone know any other TV cards that work with WHS? Im itching to buy a copy as its just what i need...:|
Ah man im so close. I have 99% of it installed using old 5.4 drivers but ive found out its the WDM drivers causing me problems.
They all install ok apart from ATI WDM TV Tuner. Says the device cannot start (Code 10)
I just cant get it working!
So close yet so far:sad:
Nope thats it. Im done, Given up on it. Can i call an RMA on it or has it been too long now?
Thats the last ATI product i ever buy. Have you seen the ammount of problems people have with ATI out there!?
Doesnt work on any system i try.
Gah:mad::(
So close to buying a copy of WHS and a new TV card today. But i thought i better read up on the curruption issues first. Seems the the problem is just too bad to think about buying a copy at the moment. You can get round the issue by having only 1 drive installed but whats the point in that?
Im trying to weigh up the pro's and con's of WHS and Server 2003. WHS is much more user friendly but no doubt server 2003 can do the same things, Just a bit more involved.
I think it might be a case of using server 2003 untill microshaft sorts themselfs out.
Now lets hope i can find a TV card that works with server 2003:(
You wont believe this but ive got it working!!!!!!!
Only on server 2003 atm but that what im using untill WHS sorts itself out.
Using the brand new catalyst drivers (released last week!) but without CCC as it still doesnt work.
The WDM drivers are now all moved into on driver called ATI T200 AVstream.
Using MMC 9.14 as the new one didnt work.
Jobs a goodun:mrgreen:

Yes i am watching TV, Freeview for that matter on server 2003:mrgreen:
Now i just need some software to stream it over my network...But free.
The best i know of are sagetv and beyond tv but there not free
Ive tried GB-PVR but i cant get it working with my card but im sure i will, Hey i got a X800 working on server 2003...Theres nothing i cant do!
Nope not heard of it but will check it out tonight
Cheers
Mat8)
That looks like a whole linux OS to me. I want somthing a little more simple...
Whats that? myorb? last time I looked it was software that streams tv signals to mobiles/other pcs :)
Found it:mrgreen:
http://www.orb.com/en
Wow, Orb is really good. Not sure if its just what i need yet but looking into it.
I need software to do it more locally though rather then over the net. A bit like media centre but getting it all from the server.
Also what other ways are there to connect to a server? All i know of are files through the network and remote desktop, Nothing like TSweb like on server 2008:S
What a *******! Now the TV card is playing up again. Says it cant start the digital part of it. Grrrr.
Im thinking i dont need server 2003 if i used orb. I could use XP MCE:lol:
Maybe it'll save you going grey :)

Now there is something I would like to see reviewed here!
You have no idea how popular these things are!
Popular? As in server 2003 support and work with XP no matter what?
Just in terms of the number that get sold :P
Doh:lol:
Does that mean there good or is it just becuase they are cheap.:|
Probably a bit of both tbh :) Plenty in stock if you want to give one a try... will cost ya tho

First thing i've seen which is PCI-e x1
I might order one tonight and give it a go. Hopefully it will work:(
Does the pinnacle card come with the cable to connect the s-video and composte inputs Jon? Just wondering being OEM:)
Nope, you get a card and if you're lucky the picker may give u a software cd... they're in the same box but not in the actual bag
Oh..
Any idea what cable it would be? Looking at hooking up a CCTV camera to the card....If it works:|
None on ebay at the moment:sad:
Will check tomorrow for you, cant remember whats on it off the top of my head
What connector does the camera have? These have co-ax and an S-Vid input
Ive not bought it yet but it could be any of those, Even an RF feed.
Was just wondering if i would be able to get hold of one:mrgreen:
Should be able to, tried Maplins?
Good point, Will have to look later. Ive placed an order anyway:mrgreen:

Looks good and a server/client version too!
Strangely that rings a bell...
Got my parts thismorning. 8:40 they came and i ordered at 2pm yesterday...Great service as usual.
Currently connected via one of the cables in the order:lol:
Also the packer was good to me and included the setup CD, So thankyou to him8)
Will try the card out tonight after work:(
Have you tride this;
Omega(Asus) - http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1817
(this software supports all ATI cards - agp and pci-e - and fixes all issues by modifying the catalyst control centre.
(something ATI couldnt be bothered with.)
I dont know where i got it from (probably on here)
hope it helps!
Stigtwo
Yup, Tried the omega drivers but its the WDM drivers im having the trouble with:(
Well the pinnacle card installs the drivers but says it needs XP to install the software.
Tried to run it in XP mode but then it says it wants SP2....Cant get round that one:|
