View Full Version : Aria Proteus Flash Triple very poor performance?
Hi folks, I recently bought this PC and it is running like an absolute dog and I don't know why. I installed windows XP (with SP3) and it really struggled with more than one application running. It would often freeze for a few minutes (windows explorer).
No settings have been changed in the BIOS and I have installed all the latest drivers.
To rule out XP not having the right drivers etc as a test I installed a spare copy of vista and again windows explorer hangs randomly.
This is without any antivirus software running so I can rule that out.
Any ideas on what it could be. The base spec of the PC is an AMD II triple core running at 3.1ghz, 2GB of RAM.
Running windows update puts a 50% load on the CPU ??
regards
Try running memtest, to test the RAM. Also test the hard drive, using the manufacturers diag.
Hirens Boot CD (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd) or Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) will have the tools to do these tests.
Yeah, second IanS's suggestion :thumb:
Well memtest ran without any errors
It reported correct processor speed and also that the memory was transferring @ 4911 Mb/sec.
CAS =2.5-1-7-1
Just checking the rest out.

Are you sure!!!
Are you sure!!!
Yep memory timings are set to auto in the BIOS.
Just run memtest again and this is what it comes up with:
RAM: 519mhz (DDR1038) / CAS : 2.5-1-7-1 /DDR-1 (128bits)
Im assuming this is the PC you have http://www.aria.co.uk/Systems/Home+Range/Proteus/Proteus+Flash+Triple+Core+Home+PC+?productId=41991
If so those RAM figures seem very very very wrong!!
Yeah the RAM speeds are totally wrong! Should be 9-9-9-24 running at 1333.

Yes that's the one. The PC came all configured with two sticks of Mushkin Silverline 1GB
What memory timings should it be ? I'll have to set them manually in the BIOS I guess!
Added after 2 minutes:
Just checked the BIOS and the auto setting has them at 9-9-9-24 which I guess is correct?
OK just ran the version of memtest from hiren's boot CD v 4.15b and that reports 9-9-9-24 and correct speeds.
The version of memtest I used before was v3.5a and obviously duff
ps. I have also moved the RAM to the correct slots on the mobo to go dual channel.
Did you install all the latest motherboard chipset drivers?
Did you install all the latest motherboard chipset drivers?
Yes I did on XP. Not yet done on the vista install. Here's the benchmark results from novatest..

Go in the bios and change from auto and set the ram to the correct timings see if that helps in anyway

Already done, it was the version of memtest that was reporting wrongly.. thanks anyways.
Did you run the hard drive diagnostics?
Did you run the hard drive diagnostics?
Yes, ran the WD drive diags late yesterday - all clear no errors.
I'm leaning towards the ATI drivers, just it seems to run much better on vista than on XP which is not supposed to happen.
Likewise the realtek ethernet port doesn't work with the latest realtek drivers and so had to go back to previous version.
I think the mobo is just really fussy about drivers.
It seems to be running OK at the moment
