hello, i am going to, try to do a clean install on my mums computer, it hasn't had one in a while, i could just restore it to factory settings, however it comes with alot of bloat wear on it, so i would rather do a clean install, however i do not have vista install disk i only have the product key which is LEGAL, i know with xp you can create a install disk from a preintslled system but can i do something like this on vista or where could i get a disk or download, one legaly!!!!

p.s. just in-case somebody wants it here is the link to makeing a xp disk LEGALY.

The fact is, if she thinks she knows what to do then why is she not doing it

Thread Hijack:

How do i go about getting a new product key form MS for Vista? Basically I've swapped my spare SSD into my mums laptop but now i need to validate Vista and can't see anywhere on the website to input the number listed on the OEM sticker though...

TY. x

I have an OEM license for Vista but I've swapped the OEM HDD out of said laptop and swapped a SSD in. Obviously it doesn't have an activated copy of Windows on it but it is possible for MS to send you a new license key if you have the OEM product key (which i do, its on a sticker underneath the laptop).

So, does anybody know the steps or phone number i need to get a new key, as the Vista page on Microsoft is somewhat barren.

you should create your own topic for this as you're "hijacking" this topic

But for all intents and purposes, I'm pretty much in the same situation as the OP.

if I understand the OPs issue correctly, he's looking to get a windows vista CD as he has a key but no disc to reinstall the OS. What you're looking for is a key to install the OS on another HDD therefore have 2 copies of windows, instead of 1 (possibly OEM), therefore illegal

Oh FFS no. I only have one install of Windows, its un-activated. I too have a product key, i need to know how to contact MS for an activation code.

THIS IS PERFECTLY LEGAL AND IS NO DIFFERENT TO YOU BUYING THE OEM VERSION OF WINDOWS 7 INSTALLING IT ON A HDD, BUYING A NEW HDD AND INSTALLING IT ON THAT. OEM CODES ARE TIED TO MOTHERBOARD.

Simply install the software and try activating over the internet. If it has not been activated before you will have no issues. If it has, you will be forced to phone MS and quote a load of numbers.

Ideally retail should be the license of choice.

Terbinator Can you not just type activate in the start menu ?

Mikeyuk3 does the manual not tell you how to create an image or can you not get one from p2p then install with your key.?

Mikey, I'll bring in a Windows 7 disc on Monday so your mum doesn't have to put up with another few years of Vista. :)

You will be fine as long as it is not installed on a PC.

If you mean un-installing the OS from the hard drive, and then using on the same computer with the same mobo then yes that will work.
