They are good for jumping, although i've not done that many, the lack of rear suspension is a killer though if you sit down when you land

So engine blew up?
How come you took the wheels off - can't be good for the undercarriage!
I think its going to the scrapyard in the sky Coiler:cry
Was the engine modified or just standard with loads of miles?
What would a second hand engine have cost to fit and then sell the car?
My VW engine blew up GIR which meant the car was worth £300 scrap or £1000 if broken. Paid £1000 for 2nd hand engine and sold car for £3000 :)
Matt looking at the rolling road the horse power looks rather high for a stock bmw ;)

It was indeed headed for the scrappers. The bodywork had nasty rust on every panel and had various other mechanical problems.

Matt looking at the rolling road the horse power looks rather high for a stock bmw ;)
Second hand engines are £400+ most half decent ones are around £500 and the car just wasn't worth me spending that money on doing it, as then I'd have needed new suspension all round, new bootlid, 2x new doors, major rust on arches fixing, parts respraying...etc. all bringing the cost of making the car worthwhile to a couple of £2k. I didn't have £400 let alone £2k at the time so stripped it down, sold what I could, got just over £600 for it in the end. If I'd sold as it was, I'd have been lucky to get £200.
The car was 100% stock engine-wise, only upgrade I did was the brakes from naff pads to decent ones. I still have no clue how I got over 200 on the rollers, standard is 193bhp and normally they hit that, I got a vast amount over, other cars on the same rollers that day for ~3bhp over read...so taking that into account mine was running something odd.
Especially as when I bought it "yeah, it's had a full service" I had to replace the discs and pads as all were shot, air filter, and when it came to stripping it down, the oil was blatantly not changed.
I owned the car for 6 months, it was running for the first 4 of those...expensive lesson that one, lost £1300 or so over all (parts and purchase price).
Still, next car when I have the cash will be something along the same lines. :D

Thats all i got at the minute will try get a better one later :p

I wonder if you can increase the BHP by driving the car "enthusiastically"?
I read somewhere cars learn/adapt to your driving style, as in clutch adjustment, engine etc

Yeah, some modern cars do, as far as I know though the e36 doesn't do it. :)
Yeah, some modern cars do, as far as I know though the e36 doesn't do it. :)
An example my 2001 1.9 tdi when I first drove it felt a little sluggish on the motorway and had a bit of a turbo delay. After 2 months of thrashing it i mean driving it quite spirited - it drove like a different car.
Once the turbo kicked in 1st gear you could maintain it all the way to 6th gear until reaching desired speed, car pulled a lot better.
This could have been down to soot in the turbo vanes being cleared out by exercising the VNT but a definite performance increase was had. :clap

LOL what actually happened to the engine then? con rod through the block?

Nah, I blew the head gasket which stuffed the head and possibly the block. Trying to fix the engine would have cost me ~£300.
I blew the head on a previous car too, a Peugeot 306 1.9D, cost me like £10 to get a new engine, swapped it out and it carried on going, shame the BMW engines aren't as cheap. :p

Seriously I don't know of any hospitals that the drive to the carpark is not even a road and so much vegetation, so guessin its a private/small hospital?

I want!
Been looking at a vr6 as a track car but hard to find a good shell at the moment. Either that or build a combination of the above cars, a mk2 VR6.
Definitely suprise some people! Would it not be better to drop a 20v turbo into a Mk2 instead of a Vr6 if it's for track use? Similar power, probably lower mileage block and lighter? Easier to source too :)

i'd agree, much lighter and more tunable then a vr, just not as good sounding :P

I've got a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0, 1968 Triumph Vitesse convertible and 2006 Nissan Micra Sport.

The vitesse is currently undergoing restoration, so the only pics I have of it are crap:p I'll post some nice ones in the summer though.
 is that a bmw v10 engine?
:thumb:
i bet that puppy flies lol
Should do, well north of 600bhp, 4wd and really short gears (tops out at 140 in 6th) :thumb:
Should be ready next month.
Ahh rippthrough... when are you going to post pics of the shiny bits on the 306 then....

Here's my work in progress

And at the moment it looks like this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v492/madrob6/Porsche%20944/IMG00009-20100501-1706.jpg
There's a bit of a story behind it. The lady who lives down the road from my parents has had it in her garage since roughly 2000 and it didn't move until I picked it up mid 2008. Since when I've gotten the engine running, tidied it up massively and am getting close to having it back on the road.
If anybody is interested I've been documenting everything I've done so far on pistonheads so I'll post the link to it if anybody wants to see.

just read all x12 pages! great stuff. How does the engine sound?
Glad you found it interesting.
The engine sounds pretty good considering how long it was left sitting. It is a little tappety but apparently that should clear after a good hard run once it's up to temp but there's a fair bit left to do before that including a full belt change, finishing replacing the fuel lines and a new windscreen.
After it's allowed back on the road I'm going to get the underseal redone, overhaul the suspension (still on the original shocks) and continue freshening it up.
I tried to get a video of the engine but apparently the microphone in a Blackberry is rubbish so all it picked up was the whining of the belts. This video was taken after I'd gotten it running for the first time so it was running pretty rough and sounded more like a Micra, an oil change and a new set of spark plugs sorted that out though.

It's currently not wanting to idle, you fire it up, revs to ~2krpm (without touching throttle) then drops relativly slowly down to about 800rpm then cuts out...which is why it stalls in one of the videos and why I have t rev quite a bit to make it move...first one I manage to not get it into gear too.
If I remember I'll put a thread up about it in Motors when I'm back at my PC with all my pictures.

Ouch...
Buying it back then? Theres only a few hundred quids worth of panels there? Done that much damage to my first one. (and 2nd I suppose, but that was only one wing) Unless the subframes pushed the floor up?
£2000 seems a little on the low side value wise though? Minis seem to of shot up in price over the last few years.
Definitely buying it back. The rest of car is worth what they're offering (engine has only done ~12k since the rebuild and the body had a bare shell respray about 2 years ago.. including new floor pans, batter box and complete front end, inner and outer).. so would be silly to let that all go and have to start again for no real reason as such.
It's done both front wings, front valance, both inner wings and has pushed the started motor back and shattered part of the bell housing. I haven't pulled all the carpet up yet, but the N/S front wheel appears to have been pushed back about an inch, so not sure if the subframe has done any damage to the floor. The roof and both sills are straight, but will need to have a look nearer the middle of the motor under the carpet to make sure.
The valuation is crap IMO. They reckon the "expert" (that managed to check it out even though it was parked hard up against the side of my house just beyond the porch) has seen them going for ~£2,000 in the trader etc (the £1,695 is the result after my £325 excess). We paid £3,500 for it back in September last year and it was insured for the same amount. I have no intentions of accepting this offer, at least not without trying to get more. With everything that had been done, and the prices heading only in one direction, I could probably have sold it for ~£4,000. £2,000 plus salvage would make me happier :)
Wish I'd crunched the beemer. Would have stood up to the Merc that hit us better.
Regards,
Ian
Well just remember that by law the insurance company has to put you back into the position you where in pre accident, they often appear to forget this small part of what insurance is all about.
Tbh, £2000 is probably what mines worth, as its a rolling shell thats had basically the same as yours done, although once the engines in etc I would hazard a guess at about 3200 to 3500.
(j reg cooper, new front end, floor, rear valance, full respray, new subframe, brake lines, discs, rebuilt calipers, hi-los, gaz shocks, adjustable camber and uprated tie bars etc.)
Just no engine in it at the moment, and very little interior, got a 1310 though built up now that needs fitting.

I think he means he ran into the other person, which means insurance will just write it off. If the other person hit him with obvious liability then he would have to be put back into the position of preaccident by the third party's insurer.
The person turned right, across his path, therefore its the 3rd partys fault.
Just because you drove into them, its doesnt mean its your fault. If you turn right across someones path, its your fault for not making sure the road is clear.
I had the blame put on me for going into the back of someone, the person insurers accused me of driving into the back of them... hmm, in that case, why has my car got no back bumper and bent rear panel... I'd been hit from behind at a set of lights, and pushed into this other guy who's insurers where saying I'd hit them, I disputed it, asked for it to go to court, and threatened them with libel. And strangely never heard off them again.
InvaderGIR

At best, going into the side of someone would go 50:50 though as their insurer would argue that their client gave plenty of notice. Without independent witnesses (which is what normally happens as nobody wants to help with these things), it's your word against theirs unfortunately.
The position of impact puts the 3rd party clearly at fault, IMO, as the impact area on his car was just in front of the front wheel.. ie: he'd only _just_ started to make his move as I was all but in the location of the collision. If I'd have hit the door or the likes, then there's a battle of who was where and first etc.. that's also how it's done so much sideways damage to the Mini I think as there was some force both towards (almost head-on as such) and a push from right to left.
Your Mini sounds sweet as too seeker. I'm thinking about using this opportunity to take the 1293 to a 1380.
My brother had an issue once regarding being hit up the **** as apparently his fault.. even though he was stationary at a roundabout. Apparently, it seemed once you reach the give way markers, most people go backwards.... doh!
I'll be arguing with the insurers over it for definite.
Regards,
Ian

Not a mechanic but i had a car do that too.... you need to replace the air filter unit..... ether that or you need to tweak the injector pin valve...

Clean filter.
The throttle body adjustment screw makes little to no odds really.
I think it could do with a throttle body clean as well as getting the injectors sonic cleaned and reset, but there are loads of other things I can fiddle with that should bring the revs into the correct area.
My new 2010 corporate car for the next 2 months. It's not a bad car, a little slow on the acceleration (just a 1.6l engine) and a tad uncomfortable in the seats, but it's not bad overall.
2010 Peugeot 308.
you need to post an actual pic of the car, not a google image search! LOL :chairfall:
Clean filter.
Just to be clear here, i dont mean the air filter its self.... i mean the air filter unit (the plastic unit part) unless its a standalone performance filter without a unit

Retro-tastic it is......
Only 70s and 80s music allowed in the CD player.... none of this carp that get released nowadays!!!
It is fantastic car to drive... handles superbly and I laugh at cars behind me trying to keep up through twisties.
a car that demands 80's rock!
id grow hair just os i could get my waynes world on inside it when at traffic lights! :weeee
Considering it's age it has proven to be very reliable.... I have a 40 mile round trip to work everyday and I can get 30MPG out of it - no problem, I just drive it sensibly. It's surprising the number of blokes driving boring "family" diesel cars (cue loads of black fumes) that have to prove their "manhood" by racing past me!!! :D

First job is a new set of 17" Alloys.
Top gear seem to deliberately go out to buy lemons.
How true. My last Celica cost me £1120 off ebay, had 70,000 on the clock and a full service history. It was totally reliable, did 40,000 miles in the 2 years I owned it, and in all that time I only had to replace tyres and a couple of bulbs.
Only sold a week ago so that I could buy my Celica Cabriolet.
You don't have to spend a fortune to get a decent car, I had a Rover 600 off ebay which cost me £600 and ran for 3 years with very little needing spending on it. Scrapped it when the last MOT failed on emissions, meanwhile it had covered around 50,000 miles and, again, only needing tyres and a centre exhaust pipe. And I never serviced it at all, just topped the oil and water up when they got low.

Looking forward to the Olympic mountain bike course being built less than 10 miles from my front door. Since getting it in January i've only covered 200-250 miles as there isn't really any decent riding spots local (the closest is a good 12-13 miles away).
Oddly enough after spending all winter looking forward to the summer I realised I much prefer sliding around in the rain and mud to dry, dusty trails so i'm actually looking to get a good amount of riding in on the run up to crimbo. :D

nice bit of kit there!
I haven't had a decent bike since going to uni- had to sell my 2 year old, hardly used GT Bravado LE in '96, then promised myself i'd get something decent after getting a proper job. for various reasons, that never happened and now I'm on a carerra (cough!) Kraken which ins't actually that bad... but the bike geek in me is itching to have time to ride more... (the wife won't ride anything more tricky than a disused railway line!)
