Creating a space scene in photoshop (going to be one of many concept art pieces to go with my 3d models for a uni project)

http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/4870/spacescene11.jpg

Any feedback would be appreciated. (Im not convinced by it yet.. i think the lens flare is putting me off)

1st time I have attempted doing a space scene in photoshop. I normally just use it to texture my models.

knowing nothing about photoshop or the effects etc

ill go for my view of the image

my thoughts (http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/6569/mythoughts.png)

what are the things in the small red circles meant to be

and if the thing in the bid red circle is meant to be a nebulae of some sorts thats a bit close to the planet dont you think

depends on whether your going for realism or not

im loving the "sunrise" as it is round the planet that looks awesome

and finally the clouds dont strike me completely believable they are too small, no big cloud systems, and look far too regular to me

otherwise a cracking first attempt :) lol

Thanks man, yeah i agree with 3 of the 4 you marked, the largest one is a nebula but is suposed to be in the distance. I also agree with the clouds maybe il try making some larger areas and also making some bigger gaps where no clouds have formed.

Those 3 other areas you marked were experiements that went wrong so havnt taken them out yet.

if its in the distance ie far enough away so as to be outside the system the planet is in, then that is one mahoosive nebula

maybe try decreasing the size down to about 60% of its current size

lol fair enough to the experiments

also on closer inspection the sunrise appears to be coming from the planet itself, the middle of the point of light is inside the curve of the planet

what the scene needs is some kind of moon maybe at the bottom three quarters of the way along from the left

Not bad indeed needs some fine tuning.

Does remind of an old haunt used for pc wallpaper ... artofgregmartin.com and some of his spacey stuff.

I'm really thrown off by the quality of the planet. I feel it needs alot of work.

lense flair eeerrrrgggghhhh......... iluminate the entire planet outline instead of just one part.

I checked allot of tuts on space scenes and lens flares are used loads to get a sence of depth and as if light is behind the planet.

And the planet outline is all iluminated. (Might not seem like it due to the lens flare i guess)

I have another version of this without the lens flare and all the little bits of mess.

(Remember is just a concept art piece its suposed to be experimental i dont have to have it picture perfect, its suposed to just convey a scene)

Here is a version without any flare (Still has allot of work I know just doing it bit by bit when I have the time, at the moment I am too busy making models and texturing them)

edit: and yeah the planet qulality is bugging me... Im not so sure how to get this better... gonna have to experiment, Possibly using images of smoke might help with the clouds.

Any tips are welcome :D

As I said, 1st time I have attempted something like this, I normally only use photoshop to texture my models when i have rendered out the UV map.

Some of the clouds need to be BIGGER, as somebody said before. Remember it's only earth that has white clouds and a blue (water) surface :)

That we know of.

Also where are you studying?
I did a game design course before and while 99% of the course was aboslute rubbish and had nothing to do with game design, the 3d modelling was the most enjoyable.

Well as for clouds etc, this is a game idea, plus we dont know if other planets exist with white clouds etc :P

I study at Teesside University, doing video games art/design. Yup loads of it is absolutely boring... but the modelling isnt I love modelling.

Only problem I see with the course is.. they are too busy teaching us loads of stuff (that allot of us dont care about) and its too much to take in. So it cripples your time trying to enhance your abilities especially in the modelling area...

I still feel like my modelling skills are quite low... but I just dont get time to do my own to get better... always having to do uni work.
