View Full Version : Panasonic G1 or TZ8

Got the chance to buy a 2nd hand G1 from a camera dealer for £230 with 6 months warranty or a new TZ8 for £179.

I like both cameras very much. Tried both but still can't decide. I know one is a compact and the other is quite a bit bigger etc!

Do you think the G1 offers more in terms of quality etc?

TZ8 can be slipped in the pocket, G1 can't. Does that bother me? No. Help!

Quite different styles of camera, depends what sort of photography you want to do.

What I do know is: £179 is way too much for the TZ8, maybe for £140-£150 is the kind of price you should expect for this camera. The TZ10 is in the £170-£180 range with Panasonic's promotion.

As ICM76 said though, they are completely different cameras for completely different purposes.

TZ8 = great for family snaps, holiday snaps, easy to use auto-settings, basically it's convenient and fire and forget.

G1 = entry level 'photographers camera', for people who take photography a bit seriously and are wanting to put in extra time and effort (and study) to get more professional looking results

I have the TZ7, its by far the best compact camera I have ever owned.

If you want a compact, I would get the TZ10, as you then get HD video with stereo sound among other things.

Sadly I cannot comment on the G1.

I've got the FZ18.. Not 100% sure how it compares to the others here, but its been a great camera and takes some amazing shots. The fully manual mode is also a huge bonus too, along with the extra lens adaptors etc that you can get. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either, if they are similar :)
