How do you work the latter point out?
They can't even give you 20mb, you get 16 or whatever, so what are you going to get on 50? 40? it's a lot better yeah, but is this just in London like the 20mb was for a while, and why don't 2MB users get upgraded?
what the hell are you going on about?
iv been on 20MB ever since it came out and get 20mb as i pay for.
the upgrade is for everyone in the UK
2mb are not being upgraded because VM think they dont use the internet much therefore no need to upgrade them.

I mean, you don't get, or not everyone, should i said, the full 20mb, and wonder how much you will get on 50mb.
And i was asked how having 2 modems will give you 100mb?

Hmmm well i get full speed anyway.
well i would get 100mb becasue we pay for 20MB at £10 a month anyway and when 50mb comes out it will be on 50mb, but also because i have another modem which is chipped i will also get 50MB from that router aswell, so 50 + 50 is 100MB. I use a cable splitter so the white cable goes into the 2 modems :D and then you just bridge the 2 connections together to get 100MB :D

If it really works, i may have to invest
my mate does them for £40 i think.
I got mine free :D
Nice, 50mb is good enough for me lol :P

VM will only be putting 50mb down the line (Plus other services)
You cant split the white cable into 2 modems cuse you will be splitting the 50 in 25-25. You need to put one under load and do a test on the other, Then see what that says.:|

lol nope, trust me, because the chipped modem logs into VM server as a diffrent mac address and not my own, you see VM do it all by mac address and only 1 mac address can be logged in per server and the chipped modem has a diffrent mac address to the normal one so your logged in twice thefore you get both speed. Trust me, it works, my hate has 40MB !!! and 1.4MB Upload !
Like for example if you bought a modem from ebay as your other modem has broken and you took the normal one out and plugged the one you just bought in it would not work, as its not the same mac address as what the registered modem is on your VM account. but which chipped modems it doesnt matter, they will still work and VM can not do anything about it.
Although download of upto 50mb, i wud still be lucky to get 20 i think... I only get 11 if i go on at 5am...
weird, i get full 20mb all the time what ever time it is. Maybe its your modem as some modems dont support 20MB.
i have the Motorala SurfBoard SB5100i which can go of upto 68MB.
I have the newest virgin media modem, a small black one. I live near london so that has to account for it. My downloads go past 1mb so my modem is okay, maybe its just the speed checker sites?
speed checkers are **** anyway, for me the download has finished before it even reaches 12MB lol.
Yeh, my speed gets only to full on 1gb files.
Oh Micky. Where did you hear about this? I want to show my dad as he always complains at me about the speed of the internet....Yeah like i can do anything about it!
on this site it doesnt say the date but iv been told June or July http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=32493
BUT
someone from Virgin Media told his guy its coming in March !! (next month)

I get the full 20mb fine over here so cant wait for this 50mb to come. Those on 8mb DSL are gonna get so much stick from me now
Yeah speed tests suck...:exclaim
There was one good one i found that was really good but no idea of the URL now lol. Anyway if you downloading most people (who have a clue) use multi-part/multi-pipe download software and that is awesome for even the slow servers.
To be honest, im so far from the exchange, i live in london, and the exchange is in luton. We need a new exchange so that I can get decent speeds.

When I got a new modem I had to ring Virgin with my new Mac address - until I did this I was only getting 2mb instead of 20mb.
I can't see how Virgin would let a random Mac get 20 mb when they havn't got a customer account tied to it???
Also run www.speedtest.net micky and post the result link!
I know you say its not accurate but i'm interested to see how it compares to my score!

You can even buy them on eBay lol but they dont come with a mac address so when you get the modem you cvarnt use it utnill you find a mac address and stick it on the modem lol.
UPDATE: VM have already started upgrading people, people in dorset and somerset have just been upgraded to 50MB and there now starting work in the south !
So everyone should be on 50MB by the end of March ! Whoooooooooo!

Hi all,
I'm new to this forum and being a customer of virgin media I stumbled on this thread in regards to upgrades to broadband.
I was really curious on the chipped modem, so mickey where can i get one, im in Manhchester.
Thanks.
please. No more discuss on the Aria Forums about chipped modems. they are illegal. Instead email me freetxt@googlemail.com
methinks micky got a telling off... ;)
i cant wait for my upgrade, im only on 4mb but im not a download whore so it does for my gaming, but if they want to up my pipes to 10mb for nothing i wont be complaining. the main reason i went with cable was due to you getting what you pay for, cable internet is the best thing they do as tv is **** anyway.
edit
btw the 20 to 50mb is only happening after the 4 to 10mb one is finished you know.
methinks micky got a telling off... ;)
Nope, just i dont want any illegal talks on this forum

Sorry to burst everyones bubble, 50mbit is not a free upgrade for 20bit users, its a new tier (XXL) and will be offered to 20bit as an upgrade at an additional charge then rolled out as a completely new product. Virgin will then have 4 tiers of broadband, M (4mbit), L (10mbit), XL (20mbit) and XXL (50mbit).

it doesnt say anything about 50mb becoming a new package.
I'm on 20MB cable the XL package , may I ask you for some screenshot from where are you downloading with up to 12mb? I don't believe it because I see this like this -> 20mb = 2mb, 50mb will be 5mb , therefore 2mb = 200kb/s and 5mb = 500kb/s.
And 2mb is the most I get from it.
Thank you.
20/8=2.5 so theoretically the maximum is 2.5MB download.
monkey56657

Virgin media 20mb broadband allows for ~2.5MB/s download speed.
The speed virgin offer is 20mb (with a lower case b) which is megabits per second.
The speed shown when downloading is in MB/s which is megabytes per second.
There are 8 bits in every byte which means for 20mb broadband you should get around 2.5MB/s or 2,560KB/s
---------------------------------------------------
Here is my results.
http://www.web-starters.net/private/monkey56657/images/1203944169.jpg (http://www.web-starters.net/private/monkey56657/images/1203944169_B.jpg)
783.0 + 662.6 + 321.4 + 872.0 = 2639KB/s
2639KB/s -> 2.58MB/s -> 21112 kbps -> 20.62 mbps
yep, im on 4Mb and get 480kps, a m8 has 20Mb and he gets a solid 2.6MB.
im still waiting for my 10Mb upgrade :( cant wait :D
4mb is now 10 mb down here in london :)
:D anyone here got any idea if VM is expecting to do a bit of rolling out ? :)
im surrounded by fibre areas, and im in a non - fibre area.. heres hoping :)
I did come across there being a 4th broadband package, referred to as XXL, and think that this will highly likely be the case.
The upgrade for 50MB for anywhere than the other 3 towns in Kent will not take place until the migration of all 4MB users to 10MB, which should be finished around June time so I was advised that other week by a Virgin customer service representative.
I live in Bromley so as soon as I know anything I will advise seeing as how I live in central Bromley, which is in Kent.
Although, the traffic shaping is proving to be a bit of a ***** because I was affected the other day.
I have a hypothetical 20MB service, although the reality is that it wildly fluctuates from between 16MB and 17MB a lot of the time, and frquently drop's to around 12MB - 13MB at busier peak hours.
When I was on the 4MB line though I always achieved as close as could be convievably possible to this figure, but 20MB struggles.
Until I know what to expect from the new 50MB service and also the possibility that it may still yet be free (very unlikely though) before I downgrade, because those that have been on 20MB for a while may get a better deal than those that just change, but I will downgrade possibly which will be the 10MB service because it is likely that I will get this, just like I did with the 4MB, because in realisty I am only being guaranteed at present between 13MB or 15MB nearly all the time but I would love them faster speeds.
Thing is though, DOCSIS3 which is a new cabling standard and is what VM are using can achieve download rates of around 250MB and about half this upload if I recall, so the potential through fibre channel is incredible but VM don't seem to want to try for this yet, although I had read through only one or two other forums that they had trialled 100MB service but was a failure.
I think the speed issues maybe due to cabling from the cable box to my home (fibre channel only runs to the box rather than the home) so maybe speed is lost there, and I know that distance doesn't/shouldn't matter but consider what is typical in terms of what most people get if subscribe to broadband speeds of over 10MB, is in general a fairly sporadic 20 - 40% loss of bandwidth, with the latter 40% being more common for most of the time, so if that is the failure on only a hypothetical 20MB, imagine the lag on the faster services.
By the way a couple of people - yes just a couple are currently trialing 40GB internet - yes 40 gigabits not megabits, just enter the search string 'fastest broadband in the world' and the stort about the 75-year old granny in Sweden - don't worry it is not filth.
Just like the japs in Tokyo have developed technology for Super HD which has 16 times the details of the standard HD, which at it's best is 1,920v by 1,080h pixels again google 'Super Hi'-Vision, also known as Ultra High Definition Video, UHDV.
Looks like the greed of business folk, expecially in this country means that we will always be 20 years plus behind the Japs and 5 or more years behing the other weathy nations of the world!
And, with thr traffic shaping that takes place between 4pm and 9pm has seen my connection dropt to just below 5MB for an exact 5 hours.
It's nothing clever from VM, it is by the boffins at Cisco and provide various levels of configuration of this sort on certain models of switches.
I don't think I was affected until around 8-9pm one evening and then restored around 2am - it was a weekend.
Anyway, this is going to be a bit of a problem with the 50MB, especially as I believe that I think you could expect considerable fluctuations in speed and will likely drop quite low to somewhere between 30 and 40MB I expect. As with all project implementations they never go to plan because senior managers and directors tend to push project rollouts sooner than is realisticly achievable.
I know because I work in IT in many business sectors and this always happens not to mention with the scale of this project.
I will be fortunate living in Kent and may have it in the next 3 - 6 months, but I expect majority of the country including London will not benefit until early part of next year.
Nevertheless, i still wait with anticipation.

Mike, in my part of kent there are no plans for Virgin at all, let alone 50MB
it doesnt say anything about 50mb becoming a new package.
What will the service be called?
We’re working on that right now and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s got a name.
How much will it cost?
We’re still working on the finer details right now, and we’re not quite ready to announce the cost.
So it's not XL (20mbit) and its not at the 20mbit rate.
This topic is well known over at digitalspy forums as well as the VM newsgroups. It is not an upgrade for 20mb, it is a whole new tier utilizing docsys 3, 20mbit will still be on docsys 2. It will also require a new modem. Thoughts are it may be around the £40-50 mark as the 20mbit has dropped to just over 20 when taking with a phone package which now seems manditory for a broadband subscription. I'd personaly like nothing more for them to upgrade 20mbit to 50mbit, being as Ive been on their top tier for over 5 years, back when top was 4mbit, but it aint gonna happen. Browse digitalspy forums for more info, or news.virginmedia.com for their newsgroups.
I spoke with Virgin last night and was very fortunate to speak with somebody sho is English and was also very knowledgable.
He told me that the 50Mb service will not get into full swing until the migration of the 4Mb to 10Mb service, which should be completed around June time.
He told me that he was one of the fortunate people to live in one of the trial areas of Kent and explained that a few other areas had already been upgraded.
The biggest beaut that he told me was that all 20Mb customers will automatically be upgraded to the 50Mb service and subscription charges will not increase for this service also meaning that there will be no XXL tariff either!
CS and tech engineers at VM dont know **** and are usualy the last to find out anything. They may tell you that 20 will be upgraded to 50, if for no other reason than to sell you 20, only for you to find out you aint getting an upgrade. Due to VirginMedias current financial state, it would make absolutely no sense for them to upgrade the small ammount of top tier users to 50mbit, when they can sell it as a whole new service for around the price they were charging for 20mbit. 4mbit, back when it was a truely unlimited service under blueyonder was £50.
Basicaly you have got one person telling you one thing, and other people have got VM employees telling them different, some of which are higher up the food chain than a simple phone jockey. Some of the idiots on the end of the phone will also tell you there is no traffic management, they know nothing about Phorm, and that Virgin dont do wireless routers.
Virgin Media have also said it will be extending its top-of-the-range 50Mbit/s service, offering it to customers (http://www.vnunet.com/itweek/news/2208184/virgin-media-announces#) who currently have a 20Mbit/s connection.
The key words there are 'extending' and offering'. Extending means new top tier, offering means no upgrade, but at an extra charge you can get 50mbit before its offered as a service in its own right. Thats from a vnunet article, which is confirmed by whats written of VM's own wesite.
The only thing i can say about this as an ex NTL/CWC/Virgin employee, the staff hear as much rumours as joe blogs on the stree does. unfortuanlty some of the staff pass this information off as true to customers but forget to mention to the customers that it's not also confirmed until officially released.
I'd be inclined to take anything said about this with a pinch of salt until an official press release.
What is confirmed is that 50mb is coming but when and how much isnt so lets leave it at that.

Yeah Faster internet is great but they are not bothering to upgrade the upload rate and 50/2 MB is pretty pathetic they are not bothering with upload so people that may need to upload large files takes along time.

Its better than what I would get with bt :P
1.4 upload from 40mb is appalling - I get half that on 2meg!
My package is officially 8, but they never provide that - there's a court case going on I think to force them to advertise what you actually get. I find most ISPs to be appalling though, I switch at least once every 2 years, I think I'm on my 8th ISP now, yet to find one that doesn't throttle the connection.

BT gives me 8mb from where i am right now. I did the test and from my distance Im getting only 6mb. But the operator I talked to before buying it did warn me, nice woman she was. I wish she was a bit more blunt and said "dont F***ING buy this!".
Its not bad, Ive got an alright speed. I download at 800kb/s arpox
@ Audigex
court case? It would be hard to tell everyone exactly what they are going to get considering it changes depending where you are. Telling me on the phone was good enough for me lol
Sorry but even if VirginMedia Will have a Download/Upload rate of 50/5 I still think that is really bad, in some countries it is a ratio of 1:1 obviously not UK. Doesn't anyone else see upload rate a problem?
yea i tihnk upload should be 100% the same as the download. the reason they cap the upload is from their words to top hackers. But how the hell as hackers still hack peoples pcs so whats the point in this cap.
VirginMedia could add a package to make them stay above the other companies, They could offer a free Firewall, Virus/Spyware scanner and internet security. Then VirginMedia would not be at all responsible for PC misuse.
they do, or did when i got mine.

they do, they also give you a brand new Netgear Wireless Router.
Which cuts off if you leave it on over night

I would be happy with 50/10 but nothing less :P
Hmmm well i get full speed anyway.
well i would get 100mb becasue we pay for 20MB at £10 a month anyway and when 50mb comes out it will be on 50mb, but also because i have another modem which is chipped i will also get 50MB from that router aswell, so 50 + 50 is 100MB. I use a cable splitter so the white cable goes into the 2 modems :D and then you just bridge the 2 connections together to get 100MB :D
Yo i was just wondering if you could give me more info about this... i know you got a telling off and everything.
PM me...
MB isn't the same as Mb
When they say "20meg" that's actually 20,000,000 bits per second, 2,500,000 bytes (2.38 megabytes)
So for 50, you get 5.96 MB/s.
Anyway, ADSL is assymetrical (lopsided) because the companies figure that home users don't need as much upload as download... which is probably true. Even when gaming, you're downloading the position of 31 other players, but only uploading the position of one. Unless you're hosting a server, you don't need equal upload as download. Personally I'd like it, but the upload would probably be at the cost of download.
Does anyone know what number i can call to ask virgin to upgrade me from teh 4meg to 10 meg on the same package?
Ive been trying to find one but there website is shocking
They are upgrading 4meg people to 10meg as we speak.

So I get 2.38 Megabytes or Megabits?
monkey56657
08-07-08, 21:41
My modem says 20480000 bits/sec rather than 20000000 bits/sec.
Why the chose such a strange number i don't know. I realise its 1024 bytes per KB, and so on but it would be 20 * 1024 *1024 = 20971520 as the line speed but they seem to just forget one of the 1024 and use 1000.
i would but my chipped modem isnt hear yet, my mate is doing it for me tomorrow and sending it me. But trust me, it works 100% ;)
You can't "stick" a MAC address on a modem, every network enabled device in the world has a different MAC address whether its a router, network card, computer or network printer.
50 + 50 does not equal 100 in this case!

lol be quite !
i do know what im doing and i do know you CAN stick a mac address on modems because they have a diffrent sort of firmware on than what Virgin Media put on them.
Ever heard of a MAC Spoofer aswell??
My router can change its MAC address through masquerading. Don't see why a modem couldn't do the same thing.

Your right mr stoba, its not made by students, anyone can add information. But most of the IT information is added by people who know what there talking about, else they wouldnt be adding it in the first place

Just to prove the Wikipedia point...
The word student is etymologically (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology) derived through Middle English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_English) from the Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) second-type (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_conjugation#Principal_parts_for_the_active_v oice) conjugation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_conjugation) verb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verb) "stŭdērĕ", meaning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meaning_%28linguistic%29) "to direct one's zeal at"; hence a student could be described as 'one who directs zeal at a subject'. In its widest use, "student" is used for anyone who is learning.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student
Only on wikipedia would the word "student" be defined in such a way.
thats not a deffinition its the origin of the word.
but yea.
Apparently my upgrade to 10mb is complete, still getting 4 though.
Some ones gonna be getting a call in the morning :P
unplug your modem for 5 min and then try again.
Really? Is that what your supposed to do?
PeterStoba
12-07-08, 14:15
Yeah, i had to do that when i was upgraded from 2 to 20 (sadly, not for free)
As if you need 20meg really... 10 meg is pretty ****in fast... faster than any ADSL in britain... and if your filesharing youll only be able to use what they can give you.... and webpages load in almost a second on 4 meg

Ofcourse I don't, but
Demo downloads = faster, especially these days when they are nearer to 1GB
Steam games = faster
BBC iPlayer and the like, load alot quicker
Music downloads = faster
Even in peak times i still get faster than a friend down the road on 4(10)
Demo downloads=depends on the server your downloading from
Steam games=fair enough :P
BBC iPlayer and the like=Whyyyy?
Music downloads=Not if you use torrents or filesharing+illegal :P

My music downloads are mostly whitelabel, the ones i like that aren't, i buy :)
Linux distros, on 2MB took 1 hour, now take like 8 minutesmax
i download about 700mb in about half an hour on 4 meg. At an average decent speed anyway, and if you ask me, thats all groovy
On my internet i expect my dvd .avi rips in 16 mins and i expect my linux distros in the same time, till i get a 100mb router my 10mb router limits me to 1mb download, but downstairs we get 2mb happily.
Then you expect too much lynx :P
I dont i get what i expect actually :P
Cant wait to get home now and try powercycling my modem and seeing what i get on speedtest.net
which modems have you lot got? iv ot the motorola surfboard and it overheats every couple of weeks :D
anybody know a way to fix the speed on them?

Also. Don't try a silly speed test. They are rubbish.
Get a fast server and download with multi-part download manager. Rule out slow servers completely.
Speed test gives me 4mbps when i download at 2MB, so its just plain stupid.
Name a good fast server and a multi-part downloader
Going here (http://www.eve-online.com/download/windows.asp)and downloading this (http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVE_Premium_Setup_58188.exe) maxes out my 20Mb connection at 2MB/s using this (http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/).
EDIT: 9 Minutes to download over 1.2 GB cant be bad :)
EDIT2: Going to speedtest.net and doing a speed test yields 8 to 15Mb/s download, proving that online speed tests are complete rubbish.

Well its working quick enough... just over 10meg, for some reason though the image link isn't working
monkey56657
13-07-08, 21:24
Its because you have to upload it to a server such as imageshack. You can't just link to your own hard drive.
I have my own server which I can get 2.2 / 2.3MB/s from single part but then I use IDM for maxing out to around 2.5MB/s
file:///C:/DOCUME%7E1/Dave/LOCALS%7E1/Temp/moz-screenshot-3.jpg
LOL NOOOOOB !
Im not a noob you tard... i uploaded the file to photobucket and did it the exact same way i always do and it wont work
It has changed the tage for some reason, but when i first uploaded it teh link was to a file on my computer

Do any of you guys think that download accelerators are worth having? Do they really speed up your downloads?
btw.... still waiting for my area to be upgraded to 10mb
No dont bothere, its a waste of your time and money. Use a program like http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/ to test your full speed. Aslong as you download from a fast server it will max out your internet connection.
Check post 182.

Just try downloading that file without IDM, then use IDM, compare the speeds.
Do this with a few different sites and you will see the difference!
Been using it for years, must have app in my opinion. I think theres a firefox plugin that does something similar if you don't want to pay a few quid.
You dont need to pay for it really, there is a free version, but you can only download 5 files at a time...
Its one of those things I use so much that it would be wrong not to pay for it, like an OS or my favourite games.
EDIT: It's not a 5 different files limit, its 5 connections to the same download, so you wont see the same benefits as the 16 connections.

IDM makes even the recently slow as hell download.com bareable.
i thought 21CN was going to be better than Virgin, from what i read its cr@p and only ADSL2 which means you can get 24MB but Virgin will offer 50MB by the time 21CN is completed/launched.
Posted by Sam (sam@samknows.com) on 13:48:12, 19 January 2008
21CN (21st Century Network) is a Next Generation Network (NGN) being deployed by British Telecom over the next 5 years. The core aim of the project is to bring the UK's telecoms network in to the digital age, whilst at the same time allowing BT to save up to £1billion per year in costs [0] (http://www.btplc.com/21CN/WhatisBTsaying/Speechesandpresentations/PaulatIEC2006.pdf). The total cost of the project is estimated at £10billion [1] (http://www.btplc.com/21CN/BTcustomers/Residentialcustomer/FAQs/Network.htm).
The following are some of the key changes that 21CN will bring:
The national PSTN phone network will be moved on to a digital IP network
The retirement of 16 existing legacy networks and the introduction of a single "multi-service" network [2] (http://www.btplc.com/21CN/BTcustomers/Residentialcustomer/Aconvergedworld/The21stcenturynetwork/network.htm)
The national roll-out of ADSL2+, offering services at up to 24Mbps. ADSL2+ Annex M will also be deployed, offering upstream rates of up to 2.5Mbps
A complete overhaul of the broadband services offered. A range of new configurable QoS (Quality of Service) products will be made available. DataStream products are being removed completely. See the broadband page (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/21cn_broadband.php) for more.
well virgin have told me that once all the 4mb peepz get the free upgrade to 10mb they are going to increase their charges by £2.50/£5.
so much for a free upgrade then?
Let me guess. They are blaming it on rising fuel costs for shipping 'the internets' to peoples houses.
still bloody waiting for my upgrade!!!
Nottingham seem to be one of the last :(
Cambridge still seems to be on 20Mb too :@
your not getting 50meg till after the summer, they are still doing the 4meg to 10 meg upgrades.
I'm in derby and ive got my upgrade to 10 meg, and most of the time i get about 12 meg (using IDM)
JUST GOT BACK FROM JERSEY!!
Burnt to a crisp :P

Awww :( I want my 50Mb
u do?? i only want 10meg...
6 People sharing 20Mb is no picnic. Especially if they start using Skype, or p2p and molesting the upload bandwith. I have to always be limiting them with router settings.
good news on this front, they will be finishing off all the 4<10meg upgrades this month so yours will be starting soon.
mine is crawling atm :( not happy and all customer care is saying is its due to the upgrade and will be like this till its finished as the are re-routing connections.
bugga
on the plus side when i finally do get 10meg its going to feel like lightning compared to this as i currently keep dropping down bellow a meg :( nothappy.

Can you set a router so it limits the bandwidth it gives out wirelessly but gives full speed to main pc connected with patch lead to router?
yup, although configurations vary from router to router. Some may not discriminate between wan and lan, but you can always restrict via IP.

Yes I can. Problem is that my router is not in my room, I have to use wireless while two of my housemates are wired.

I basically have it set to that my IP gets 50% upload bandwith no matter what, and P2P is disabled in the evening. Download bandwith isn't normally an issue.
:S
VM will only be putting 50mb down the line (Plus other services)
You cant split the white cable into 2 modems cuse you will be splitting the 50 in 25-25. You need to put one under load and do a test on the other, Then see what that says.:|
it does work m8 you load ballance 2 virgin modems just run them off a splitter i get just under 40mb on nzb groups just under 5mb wen downloading

The new 50 Mbps service will cost £51 a month, although this is reduced to £35 if users also take a Virgin Phone line for an additional £11 a month.
:| Christ!
rip off ill stick to my 40mb
http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/50Mb/index.do
Im on virgin 20MB and at most only get 10-15mb so it will probs be about 30-35mb.
No way paying that though..
I phoned virgin the other day to see if they could do me a price for HD TV. But becuase i was changing my prices i lost loads of my "Loyalty" discount. They didnt want to do me a deal even though i was staying with them and wanted to pay more!
So in the end i told them to stick the TV and changed the phone slightly and am getting Sky HD soon:mrgreen:
I called to cancel my entire virgin package 2 weeks back. They ended up giving me 20mb B/B and basic phone line for £22.
Got rid of the TV as use built in LCD freeview now.
Quite a nice price
oh and they chucked me in a wireless Netgear router for my Wii :)
Virgin's 50mb modem....

Want one....
yep that modem be hacked first week its rolled out lol i think just matter of using test clip on chip
I hope so but will wait for prices to drop before buying a new one. ;)
I'd make do with 10mb cable.....make that ANY cable....all i can hope for is that BT get their act together and start upgrading the lines / exchanges so us folk that live more than a mile or two from the exchange can get decent download speeds :(

Im getting 19.5mb out of my 20mb service, still cant complain, comparing it to the 6.5 I was getting out of o2 its great. Dont get VM HD TV, I enquired, the sales guy told me they have only got 1 HD channel !!!!, so got SKY HD with there £49 deal on the box, its great..

lol nope, trust me, because the chipped modem logs into VM server as a diffrent mac address and not my own, you see VM do it all by mac address and only 1 mac address can be logged in per server and the chipped modem has a diffrent mac address to the normal one so your logged in twice thefore you get both speed. Trust me, it works, my hate has 40MB !!! and 1.4MB Upload !
Like for example if you bought a modem from **** as your other modem has broken and you took the normal one out and plugged the one you just bought in it would not work, as its not the same mac address as what the registered modem is on your VM account. but which chipped modems it doesnt matter, they will still work and VM can not do anything about it.

ahhh but if you was to make this thread nowadays mods would have binned it
as the OP is promoting the use of hacked modems and seems to be trying to sell them.
