I have a friend who has ordered new bits to upgrade his pc.

I get the job to put it together for him :sad:

So he has ordered an E1200 gona be interesting how fast this thing will clock to!

He has bought Patriot PC6400LL so that should be fine.

Not sure if the Asus G31 board will allow it to go that far.

Will let you know when I've got it all together

Nice setup, should do well being a chip with so much headroom, like the E2xxx series but half the cache again.

He only uses the PC for web browsing etc, He is upgrading from a Sempron 64 2Ghz Socket 754 so should find it a bit quicker.

He couldn't afford an e2xxx but wanted something as future proof as possible.

Yeh those cpus are more than enough for browsing and should show the amazing power of the core 2 architecture.

Should be a fairly high multiplier with a low FSB - so start overclocking it and see how you get on!

well he is due at 7.30 so give me a couple of hours and I will post the results.

Not sure if he is staying with it or going to leave it with me.

As for the Multi i am led to believe that it is 8 x 200 so hoping to stick at usual FSB settings ie 266, 300, 333, 366 and 400 (he has PC6400 ram)

so

8x200=1600
8x266=2128
8x300=2400
8x333=2664
8x400=3200 100% overclock, hmm can't see that working

LOL how many more "faulty" cpu's are intel going to release.

The 100% oc IS very impressive, though i doubt all will be as capable, and also whos going to buy a £100+ mobo like the x38 based one used in that review and stick a £35 cpu in it, at least not for long anyway as it will only be a short term stepping stone if they do.

Well it is in and running, had a few issues with the boards internal usb ports.

After a bios update I get them working then his internal 4 port hub wouldn't work.

After half an hour I took it out and realised I had forgotten to power it :redface:

So he has just left with it running at standard speed.

He knows it required more tweeking to get it running smoothly so I will be updating you all as and when.

Cheated a little bit, set HDD port to standard IDE so he is running same version of XP, no reinstall required :mrgreen: ( I know its not ideal, but he will break something in the os soon no doubt)

I would definetely reinstall windows, there will be so much rubbish left behind from old installation drivers, reg entries, etc etc.

On new system can't beat a good fresh install

Then OC is to 3GHZ + !

Well time (and disk space) was of a premium last night. He litterally left me at 10pm.

I would have reinstalled windows if I had time, no doubt I will redo it for him in the next few weeks.

As for the over clock I have installed my Q6600's (retail) Heatsink and fan on to his E1200, the E1200 is half the height and all aluminium, compared to the copper core of the Q6600.

Tonight he is bring around his kids PC to have his old "guts" put in it.

Well he's ordered a new HDD for it and wants a full reinstall :exclaim

So he delivered it here last night.

Had a quick go at overclocking, best I got was 1.76Ghz this board (Asus P5KPL-VM) has next to no overclocking options.

I will have a closer look tonight when I get home, but I think I am going to need to be very lucky to get any more out of it.

UPDATE

Had another quick go this morning, got it running @250x8 (2Ghz) memory set to 667 giving 834.

There are NO options for Voltage of any sort on this board, unless I am missing something.

Also it is using the onboard graphics!

currently running prime 95, Load temps are... 35C! wow thats hot (turns sarcasm off)
