View Full Version : Windows 7 install won't recognise my HD
I've built my new system with a Samsung F3 1TB hard drive. When I look in the BIOS the hard drive is being detected as you would expect. When I try to install Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OEM onto the system it doesn't recognise the HDD and says do I want to install drivers:knock:
The HDD didn't come with any driver discs, can anyone help me please. Been at it all day  I've formatted my second drive in an old PC to install Windows 7 on and then format the F3 as a second drive if no-one can tell me how to get Win 7 to recognise it.
Cheers
John
What channel is the drive plugged into? Make sure it is the standard SATA ports and not Raid ports. Motherboard manual should help you there.
Some system specs might help, motherboard would be key.
ha ha beat me to it....does sound like he has the SATA plugged into a raid port ...which would explain why its asking for drivers

I'm not called Speed for nothing! :thumb:
I had an issue where Win7 wouldn't recognise my Raid-0 volume to install to until I removed all other devices from the Boot Priority list in the BIOS and used F11 to boot from CD.
That did the trick for me... annoying but it worked. Once installed I re-enabled other boot devices and it's fine now :)
Yet another "feature"
I've tried the hard drive in several SATA ports and all are doing the same thing :(
When I look at the hard drives in the BIOS it has them listed as Master and Slave ports, does this mean they are set up for RAID? ie I have SATA port 0 master, SATA port 0 Slave etc.

What is the make and model of your motherboard?
I also read that removing all other hard drives other than the one you're installing to can help... along with the boot order trick I mentioned above :)
Master and Slave aren't RAID terms, they are IDE terms - IDE drives used to run with two drives on a cable, one of which was the 'master' drive, the other the 'slave'.
This suggests that the SATA controller is running in ATA mode (basically a compatibility mode) and you could try changing that to AHCI instead.
The motherboard is this one:-
https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Motherboards/AMD+AM3+%28700+Chipset%29/Gigabyte+GA-MA770T-UD3+MA770+%28Socket+AM3%29+DDR3+Motherboard+?produ ctId=41327
It's a gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3
I only have 1 hard drive in the system atm Spaceboy.
I've tried setting it to AHCI it didn't work on that either :(
I would use the Motherboard CD to insert the SATA Controller Driver into the W7 Installation when it asks for it.
EDIT: Also which DVD Drive do you have?
OK lets start from scratch..... disconnect the hd ... then short the CMOS reset pins....to revert back to default
Connect the SATA cable to the SATA port closest to the edge of the board ...plug in the power put the Windows CD in the drive and power the system up...follow the on screen prompts
Which bit does it stall at?

I am not sure if it is still the case but some AMD drives had issues with Samsung F3 Drives.
It'd certainly be worth updating to the latest BIOS available from Gigabyte for that board.
Ok a quick update, I reverted the BIOS back to factory settings. Stole an old HDD out of my old PC and now windows 7 is happily installing onto the old drive, it's a WD160 GB drive I've had for years. Very strange that the new drive didn't work :(
I'll try installing the new drive into the PC once Win 7 has finished installing and see if it is detected and try formatting it.
Thanks everyone for the help, much appreciated :D
I think like wonderlust mentioned there were some issues with the F3 drives so that might be it.

Someone having the same issue seemed the Gigabyte board didn't like the HDD

Hmm interesting, I'll try formatting the Samsung F3 in the new PC and see if it recognises it then. Thanks for the help.
Had this a few times. Make absolutely sure that the drive you want to install Windows on is listed as the primary boot device, and the primary hard drive in the boot order.
Did you format the new drive in windows and copy some files over ? can you put the drive back on the pc and test the drive to make sure its not faulty?
Other than that try a new sata cable , id test the drive and check the S.M.A.R.T.
Ive got a 1T samsung F3 if i remove it from the sata port to swap it some times it wont be recognised in windows i need to unplug and plug in again I have no idea why ive tested it and all is fine.

I've formatted it as a second drive on the new PC I was trying to install onto initially. It formatted fine and now I can access with no problems. :weeee

That's a pain in the butt eh, lucky you had a second drive to assist :)
Glad it's all sorted though!

I had an issue with my F3 Sammy, had to initialise it first on another PC.
Glad you got it sorted though.
