I just bought 2 x 26802 (http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Memory/DDR2/DDR2+800+%28PC6400%29/Patriot+2GB+PC2-6400+C4+Extreme+Performance+%282x1GB%29+?productId =26802) RAM.
On all the mem tests on the UBCD (ultimate boot cd) and all the CPU tests it all checks out fine yet on windows it has a spaz. If it boots properly then its getting 300-400 hard faults per second and is very slow. I often get the display going off or other things crashing. I managed to do a "sfc /scannow" to 100% and it had no problems.
Now I set the CPU frequency back to stock (as well as everything else)...I havnt tried to overclock the new RAM yet but have tried manually setting the timings/voltage as well as everything auto.
Now the fact that if I return the old cheapo RAM the problem still remains. All checks out in the tests but not in windows. (Ubuntu live CD is also choppy and sometimes doesnt boot).
Any ideas on what I should try next ?

I would just like to point out that the price has gone down about £5 since yesterday :O
Well if the same thing happens with your old ram then I guess the motherboard is to blame. Or maybe some windows setting.
Its a tricky problem, I use the exact same RAM perfectly fine.

Im not sure why all the memtests come out fine though. (possibly ruling out motherboard)
Or why Ubuntu does boot (possibly ruling out a windows setting)
I think it just needs hug

It seems to be gradually lowering itself. Its now under 100 during something memory stressing.
Hard faults aren't something to worry about really. I get a couple of hundred when doing things with the hard drive like loading a game or program, I thinks its the way its supposed to work.

Its very strange today when I first turned it on it started really bad again and didnt settle for a 10 minutes. As if it needs to warm up :|
You don't keep it in a cold room do you? I always give mine a blanket at night :P
Its not the vista search / indexing thing is it? My pc takes a few mins to stop thrashing the hard drives when i first boot it up.
Turn it off man, TURN IT OFF !!!! :D
It could also be prefetch, which I have turend off. Not noticed a difference between on or off to be honest, so I'm leaving it off!
You cannot turn off search indexer....
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click System and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double-click Services
If asked for permission, click Continue
Scroll through the list and find "Windows Search"
Right-click it, and click Properties
Click Stop
Click the dropdown box next to Startup Type
Click Disabled
Click OKthis should disable the following processes:
SearchProtocolHost
SearchFilterHost
SearchIndexer
Well according to microsoft you cant.. Mine was broken and kept freezing when i copied files, just reset it in registry and was fine.
i dont see why disabling the indexing service should not be possible. Perhaps they dont recommend it if you have a lot of media in your user folder

No indexing service is disabled.
SuperFetch is set on Automatic (Delayed Start) and the memory problems were around before and after this starting.
I say were because now I cranked the FSB voltage up +12% and it has settled it and all seems fine now. I did a few things CRC checking as that was a problem before and ran Prime95 torture test (ran for 1 hour 4 minutes then it failed :() and memtest checks out still so I think its okay. Actually using the machine is alright now and im running another Prime95 test now.
My Ram has to be 2.3v (norm should be 2.2v) for it to be running stable as well. Its like everything needs jsut that bit more voltage even when not overclocked. :|
Yeh sometimes the V droop you naturally get could crash the pc.
