View Full Version : Steam Games and Windows
Ok well I think the time has finally come that I replace my corrupt copy of Windows Vista 32bit with Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, I have the CD's ready and am currently backing up my files etc and finding 64bit drivers.
I just came across a potential problem though, I recently purchased Call of duty Black Ops for steam like 3 days ago, it took about 2 days to download with my internet speed :o. Anyway now that I'm upgrading I really really really do not want to go through those torturous 2 days again so I was wondering if I could just back up the steam apps folder from my current OS installation and once windows 7 is installed just paste the steam apps folder their so I don't have to download black ops again from them.
Is that possible, would the steam client allow it? Would it sitll work considering I am no longer using Windows Vista and no longer using a 32bit operating system?
Thanks guys. Also my operating system is really badly corrupted now, it's been like this for 4 months lol but I never bothered reinstalling/upgrading it, can't install anything anymore, windows screen saver turns on but never turns off and a hell lot more stuff.
Just copy the Steam folder, reinstall, replace steam folder and reinstall steam.
It does work as i did exactly this when i installed win7 x64.. and i came from win xp x86..
ah well a little slow today.. hmm.. maybe everyday.. ;)
Normally isn't a problem to copy your steam folder and then reinstall steam on top of the location for it to pick up all the game folders. Don't think there is an x64 version of Black Ops, I might be wrong, so I doubt you will have a problem. Not going to hurt to try anyway.
EDIT: Oh man, why didn't I go for a short snipey post like snakey :(
Thanks for your quick replies guys, I'm really looking forward to this upgrade now :D. Sorry for the late response, got held up.

Another quick question, does the CPU need any drivers? I used to have my computer dual booted with Win 7 32bit and Win Vista 32bit and never needed any drivers for the CPU, same case for 64bit?
You wont be needing any drivers for the CPU and you will find that W7 is very good at finding drivers in its library or online for most of your hardware.
I was just wondering what hard drive nuking was? Is it a way to completely format the hard drive? Anyway I thought it would be a nice idea to 'nuke' my hard drive and then install the new operating system?
How can I do this? :D

well you need some uranium some tnt and to be very good at maths
a high resistance to radioactivity is also advised
Did my research, How about dban?
Never liked lemons. (Just kidding :))

Format the hard drive before install. Anything else is pointless.

Only really any point in doing more if you are gonna be selling it on.

Ok like normal I guess then.
TBH I dont format a large drive for install, that way Program files and user account data remains and can be reused.
Lol I always do, I thought it would corrupt the installation if I didn't :s. Oh well I am done now and sending this message from Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Pretty neat, it's a major performance boost compared to Vista, I don't know why I never upgraded earlier. Only downside is their are a lot of back up's to be copyed and installed again :(
Ok well I installed steam and copyed black ops and basically almost the whole steam apps folder into "C:\Prorgam Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\". Then I ran steam and Black Ops was their, ready downloaded :D.
When I ran Black Ops multiplayer it done first time set up installing direct x, then it done nothing :(. Tried running it again and it done nothing. So I ran single player and it actually started up and showed the start up movie, when I click left mouse to skip it closes off and ends it's own process. Clearly their's some compatibility issue here? Or a problem with file paths? Any ideas how I can fix it.
I just deleted everything and am downloading black ops all over again, but do you guys have any suggestions to fix it?
Erm judging by your rule breaking signature, it's difficult to diagnose. I suspect a driver issue. What GPU do you have?

Please can you all ensure your signature image is no larger than 500*125 pixels and 50 kb in size. You may also have one line of text. Alternatively you may have four lines of text. We reserve the right to delete or change any signatures which do not follow these rules.

+1, that's exactly what I do if i need to re-install windows.

I think my GPU driver is ok, I installed one of the new ones from AMD's website, it said it's for the ATi 3xxx series so I thought that would be the right one. Also when I managed to run GTA SA from my external hard drive easily.

The only issue I had with doing this once was W7 to W7 and Steam failing to start. If this happens it is almost always down to the ownership/permissions of the folder, just take ownership and check the permissions.

I assume that the redownload didn't fix it then?
Actually redonwloaded it and it runs fine, something defiantly went wrong with the old files, maybe I didn't get all the correct ones since I only copied the SteamApps folder. Anyway it works now :). I've wasted 25GB of my 40GB limit in the last week downloading Black Ops about 3 and a half times, hope I don't have to again :(.
Update:
Just realised what the problem probably was, I think I needed to redownload directX for it to work, I guess I forgot about that :s.
