Hey, I am expecting my new build tomorrow so I want to start fresh. What are the best FREE anti-virus/spyware software that I should get?

Thanks!

I suggest you download and install Microsoft's Security Essentials. (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/) This is completely free and you have free updates for life. A very good peice of AV software, no bloat and unobtrusive, just how AV should really be.

Also Malwarebytes Antimalware (http://forums.aria.co.uk/www.malwarebytes.org) is a great and free to use "Nasty" malware remover. Will get rid of most bad infections. I also recommend Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html) which will remove more tracking cookies and such.

When removing nasty ingrained viruses for customers, I often use ESET online scanner. (http://www.eset.com/online-scanner) When no av is installed or to be trusted.

Avira free edition is ok

http://www.av-comparatives.org/ stays pretty up to date with recommendations

MSE is very good, Malwarebytes is also excellent.

Personally I use Avast! for antivirus http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?part=dl-85737&subj=dl&tag=button

MSE, MBAM, SuperAntiSpyware and Online Armour Firewall. All very good in their own right and should keep you safe online.

Just keep in mind that you'll stay safe as long as you stay away from the questionable sites and try to avoid Limewire/Bearshare, etc like the plague.

Best AV = the index finger of the hand you use to control the mouse :) ;)
