Hi,

As it says what TV shows or mini-series have you seen that you would recommend to people.

I rate the following;

Dexter (On 5th Season)

Fringe (On 3rd Season)

Band Of Brothers (1 Mini-series)

The Wire (5 Seasons)

Generation Kill (1 Mini-series)

True Blood (4 Season starts next spring)

The Good Guys (On 1st Season)

Lie 2 Me (On 3rd Season)

The Walking Dead (Just started)

They are all worth a watch in opinion.

Fringe is possibly the best thing on TV since Lost first started.

Fringe is indeed, bloody awesome. I also watch Dexter, which is also amazing.

In addition to those two my weekly viewing schedule also includes:

House
Family Guy
American Dad!
The Cleveland Show
South Park
Big Bang Theory
NCIS
CSI

Dexter IMO is the best show on the TV at the moment, season 4 was a bit ropey, but season 5 has so far been excellent.

The Good Guys Wayneo mentioned is a new Cop show which I find very entertaining and Jenny Wade who plays Liz in it is hot!!

Supernatural season 6 has so far been a bit of a let down for me, but is still great compared to a lot of other shows out there.

Ive enjoyed the start of Nikita, and No Ordinary Family shows signs of possible potential.

The Event that started recently is odd, but not bad.

I have enjoyed the first couple of episodes of Walking Dead.

Burn Notice is restarting again tomorrow night in the US, so should be with us soon I hope.

Still enjoy Chuck, but its not quite as good as when it started.

Then you have Big Bang theory and How I Met Your Mother - two very good half hour comedy shows.

Simon.

The new Stargate Universe is actually not bad, closer to BSG than the normal SG shows.

Other than that I really cant think of anything close to being like BSG.

Forgot to add earlier the remake of Hawaii Five-0 seems pretty good.

Bones is another that's certainly worth a watch. Currently on season 6.

Can't argue with Dexter - it's soooo good

+1 for Sons of Anarchy - Sam Cro rule! (tho' thanks to a South Park episode every time they're all riding their bikes I inwardly shout "FAGS!")

Going to suggest The Venture Brothers as a good laugh - Adult Swim animation in it's 4th season.

and y'all know how I feel about the Walking Dead :D

Anyone else "Binge watch" stuff - you get a box set or something and consume about 8 hours of TV by accident?

many of my favourites already mentioned, but a truly superb show not yet listed:
Breaking Bad - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0903747/ & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_Bad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breaking_Bad)

other recommendations:
Life (starring Damien Lewis)
Studio 60 (on the Sunset Strip) - being repeated frequently on Channel 4, late night/early morning

Not watched yet, but have on Sky+ as it's supposed to be good:
The Event. EDIT: watched it now - not that great so can't recommend it as one of the best shows on TV

AdultSwim animation on FX:
Venture Bros
Titan Maximum

I quite like Burn Notice although the latest series hasn't quite got the magic. Not too keen on the two of the main actors but evil dead guy usually gets a chuckle or two.. plus there's always scantily clad women to oggle over.

The Mentalist can be good, but it can also be a bit similar from episode to episode as the characters don't seem to evolve that much and u get used to Patrick Jane's MO.

I enjoyed Better off Ted before it got cancelled. Easy to watch with some very funny back and fourths.

I dislike The Event. The style reminds me of Flashforward... and that was terrible. Constant flashbacks. The over use of jumping back and forward in time gets on my nerves.

Outstanding show that surprisingly no one has suggested yet:
Mad Men

this is going to seem like a strange recommendation for this forum as it's pure melodrama, but it's quite good and may win you some points with your wife/girlfriend:
Brothers & Sisters

tentative recommendation as it's really odd, and may be one of those love it or hate it type shows:
John From Cincinnati

and something British to offset the total dominance of US shows:
Sherlock Holmes (2010 interpretation by Moffat & Gatiss)

Fringe seemed like a poor/naff and cheaper remake of X Files
Warehouse 13 is the crappy x files knockoff with at best dopey cgi.Fringe is definitely taking at least some inspiration from the X-files, and the show makes a few cute references in certain episodes (try the S2 opener) I think the production values of Fringe are the equal of the X-Files, maybe Fringe is little slicker. However Mulder has greater charisma than Peter, and the Mulder/Scully has relationship more depth and humour than the Peter/Olivia partnership. That said I really like Fringe, just keeping fingers crossed producers don't screw it up towards the end like they did with Alias & Lost.

Warehouse 13 is very different show, low budget and tongue in cheek, but they have gone for a very similar (& quite ham fisted) approach to the main characters' partnership - one is logical, the other instinctive/psychic. I thought it was likeable for the first season, but no way is it must watch TV.

Not seen series two though, only seen one which seemed OK.S2 is on SyFy now so I expect it'll be on Channel 1 or Living once the first airing finishes. It's pretty much as before, but they have done a crossover episode with Eureka (and one episode of Eureka S4 is a crossover with Warehouse 13) Both involve Claudia & Fargo, and some truly cringe worthy bad acting.

Fringe series one was good, I like the witty dialog. Walter Bishop is class with the in his own world dialogue and it's a brilliant way of breaking up all the geeky science... although i kinda like the geeky science.

The first dialog between Walter and Peter cracked me up. It was delivered perfectly.

Peter Bishop (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005045/): Hello Walter
Dr. Walter Bishop (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0633604/): I thought you'd be fatter.
Peter Bishop (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005045/): You thought I would be fatter. Excellent. First words, perfect.
Dr. Walter Bishop (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0633604/): No, no. As a boy you were rounder.
Peter Bishop (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005045/): Yes, I was. Until the summer before high school, not that I'd expect you to remember that.

After series one it lost some of the magic for me and the whole two worlds thing... meh. I still watch it though and it's currently on Series 3 episode 6.

I find warehouse 13 a bit pants. Every now and then a joke works but all in all it's a bit low quality. It's probably a little better than The Sanctuary which is also pretty *** and low budget... u used to be hot Samantha Carter, what happened?

Eureka is better than w13 although the plot has gone round in circles a couple of times and the latest series is pathetic. The real low point was Henry and his new wife dancing and singing... even did the robot a few times... badly i might add. *shudder*

Oh cmon? The three letter word starting with P and ending with O meaning faeces is filtered?

Caved in and bought Generation Kill on blu ray.....

If anyone has any sort of interest in recent wars/campaigns or just Military History in general then i would seriously recommend it.

Just awesome, i wasn't there for the invasion, but i've been to Iraq twice and feel for these guys, caught between whats right and the orders of incompetent Officers plus the pressure cooker that life threatening situations bring with it.

Yes its crude, offensive and has some graphic scenes in it, but look at the title (Generation Kill), read what its about (Invasion of Iraq with Marines) and it'll make sense.

By far the best Series/Film to cover events in Iraq.

New show called Lost Girl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Girl_(TV_series)) isnt bad - its about a woman who is a bisexual succubus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Succubus) and she becomes a sort of PI. There are loads of other non human characters called Fae (dark and light ones) who she has to investigate/deal with each week.

Anna Silk (http://www.google.co.uk/images?rlz=1C1_____en-GBGB344GB344&q=anna+silk&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=685) plays the lead and Ksenia Solo (http://www.google.co.uk/images?rlz=1C1_____en-GBGB344GB344&q=Ksenia+Solo&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1280&bih=685) plays her sidekicky type person.

The Wire is the best TV I've seen bar none. only watched it due to recommendations and actually found the first two seasons hard work, but then it all clicked in the third and I was hooked. Will deffo watch again when I get time, many say it's even better second time around.

Didn't bother with the Event, glad I haven't. I watched Flash Forward last year and thought it was ok, but wasn't surprised it was cancelled, the huge mid-season breaks don't do them any favours at all, really difficult to get back into them after several months.

The Shield - all 7 seasons, absolutely stunning ground breaking tv, and for those arguing that The Wire is better.... without The Shield paving the way, the wire wouldn't have happened !
Not to mention that it has one of the most thought provoking and well written ends to a show ever

of the things currrently airing.... Sons of Anarchy is really really good

Sons of anarchy imo has gone downhill this season.

SoA S2 or S3 went downhill?

he can't be talking about season 3 that has just finished in the states, because trust me, that is one cracking build up to, and finish to a season, one of the best i have seen in a long time, and you will not see it coming, it also has a couple of really cool guest appearances, the best of which is Episode 3 i believe, when Tig calls in a cleaner ;)

Yes they are somewhat different, but it is the style and aggressiveness of the content, the shield pushed the boundaries somewhat, and proved that not only could it be done, and well, but audiences would watch and not be complaining about the content.

Kurt Sutter - yup, i know ... and the ending to Season 3 of SoA is pure Sutter style. Blood thirsty, yeah, but needed... the pre-season 2 warning was a first for US tv as well, not only for episode 1's content, but also advising viewers that without having watched season 1, then this episode will not only make little sense, but may detract from their enjoyment of the show

Talking of police shows, I've got massively in to Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_tv_series), an American TV series about a homicide detective called Kate Beckett and an author who shadows her and - later on - helps her out, called Richard Castle. I find it very watchable, bought the first book which accompanies the series called Heat Wave but it's best if you watch the TV series first so you can understand what's going on.

Archer (IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1486217/) & Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer_%28TV_series%29)) - adult animation that I don't think had a mention yet. It's a spy spoof packed full of dirty jokes. Season 2 is now airing in the US, so season 1 may be due a repeat over here before we get the second.

Everyone in my house is addicted to Weeds. I can't see the appeal after 3 episodes of it.Philistine :p Weeds is excellent, I recently finished watching all of it and am looking forward to the final series. I've just had one of my peers in the States send me over the DVD of "Deadliest Warrior" - bit like Mythbusters but with more blood and guts - Each week two fighters from the past are contrasted with the help of experts to find out who would win in a scrap...It has the guy from 300 narrating it and each episode is a worthy timekiller - bit samey back to back tho'.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand .... then followed by the pre-quell series "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" that is airing now (or if you can wait, watch them in reverse ;) pre-quell series is only 6 episodes and they are 2 into it already)

You are likely to have to source some none standard source for the pre-quell series, because it's airing in Australia right now, and Bravo that hosted the original series here has gone off air

John Hannah is in this one and is very good, i thoroughly enjoyed it

Virgin Media's current channel line-up is verging on pathetic now. I recently upgraded my channel list to include the L package so my kids could watch some extra kiddies channels and I could watch some Star Trek, StrikeForce and few other bits I get time to watch. When I upgraded, the guy on the phone listed all the channels available, at least 5 of which are now gone. I think I'll give them a bell and see what they can do.

Have to say Slotty was bang on about the programmes on today, pure mindless crap. Anything worthwhile seems to be getting moved up towards the higher cost subscriptions.

I'm just about to watch breaking bad and the reason is my friend described the plot to me... it sounds absolutely brilliant! I'm not a big HBO fan I hate american mini series as they all seem to be a variation on a theme, but this one just seems to stand out really well all by it's self. Watched the first episode - definitely not a prison Break Spin Off - more a mixture of Chase (US marshalls show) and White Collar (criminal helps the feds solve crimes).

Not brilliant - but nice little twist at the end - which I suppose I might have twigged if I was paying a lot closer attention.

New 30 min comedy started in states called Mad Love - it has Jason Biggs (American Pie) and Sarah Chalke (Scrubs) in - first impressions are good if you like the 30 minute comedy style shows.

My list (including shows long since finished, like the X-Files) totals 120 and states

Time Wasted

Just added Stargate to my list and it increased to

Time Wasted

very end of the interview linked in that article...

TV Guide Magazine: But you're not in a hurry.
Sutter: I've got seven seasons before the clock runs out on the show, so not yet, no.

:weeee :weeee

This is probably one of the most telling things Kurt Sutter has said during various interviews (and it was during a discussion regarding people not really caring about the baby story lines !)

I think this season, in the bigger context of the series, is a piece of the puzzle that will fit in nicely and will make sense

That to me shows a level of commitment to a story line and growth path of a show that explains a lot about why Kurt Sutters works tend to be well rounded in most respects once the story has played out and the dust settles, everything fits into place, and he has a real ability to do that, whilst picking writers etc that can bring the same level of vision to the show they are working on

Snakedoc
11-04-11, 19:06
This makes me most happy. I cant find the start date though.

Gunslinger
11-04-11, 21:05

In the mean time, if you like this you'll probably like Kurt Sutter's previous show... "The Shield"

I enjoyed The Shield and agree on the way it went. I did stay till the end and was slightly disappointed. The Wire was much better. The Pillars of The Earth was fairly well made too.

If you enjoy "Time Travel" type programmes, check out Day Break. It's basically Groundhog Day and is done very well. Most of it all fits nicely together. They only made one series.

Gunslinger
12-04-11, 11:42
Day Break sounds familiar, not sure why, maybe caught one episode or 2.

There were rumours of a Shield movie, to pick up where the show left off, trouble is, for it to work as a movie, and have wider appeal and thus be economically viable, then they have to make sure that the story stands on it's own merits and does not require you to be familiar with the tv show run.... so i'm not sure if it will happen, and if it does, if it will do the story justice

Pepp77

Fringe is brill like that to.
Bones I like, also House, Grays Anatomy, Csi, Miami and Ny watched from the start.
Also Chuck, Hawaii five 0, No ordinary family, Dexter waiting for next one.

Watched the first 3 seasons of friday night lights, 1st is great, 2nd is good, 3rd is meh, turns into dawson's creek and loses any sort of american football action at all really.

The film is wayyy better.

I'm likening it, so far its not to middle earth-ish for my tasted. Good to see Sean Bean in a decent role.

Anyone watched The Unit (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460690/)? I've been re-watching it, really good show.

Loving Game of Thrones also, haven't read the books, but I hope the Lanisters get whats coming to them, was well sad when they killed Sansa's direwolf!

Other series i've watched recently include:

The Walking Dead
Spartacus: Gods Of The Arena
Boardwalk Empire (Absolutely awesome series, it should be mandatory viewing!)

I also watch alot of Criminal Minds, as im pretty interested in psychology and behavioural analysis etc.

No, I haven't seen it yet, just watching Season 6 of the original atm, I don't usually like the spin off shows, as I kinda just get used to the original series characters, I only ever watched the original csi, didnt bother with Miami/New York.

They actually have a really good cast apart from the boy playing Arthur, it could have been really good if it was more Spartacus like and a little less Robin Hood in tights.
