Before I start I would like to point out that this thread is not for discussion of ANYTHING ILLEGAL or torrents themselves.

Ok, This is what I would like to do.

I have my laptop and my Dell P4 system which I'm using to stream to my consoles etc.

I would like to be able to open a torrent from my laptop but download on the Dell system. Can this be done? i.e when I click the torrent on the laptop it automatically opens on the dell within utorrent and doesn't need the laptop on then to continue downloading.

Thanks.

No that I'm aware of automatically with uTorrent anyway... uTorrent is designed as a very small client, with little in the way of advanced features.

Can't think of any way to do this which doesn't involve writing a bit of custom software. Pretty sure there's nothing within uTorrent itself to support it, as jbromley said it's a very minimalist bit of software really (which is, imo, usually a good thing).

uTorrent has a built in web interface that you can configure.

http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/webui

Basically on your laptop you'd download the torrent file, then point your web browser to your Dell's IP, and upload the torrent file to it and it'll download it. I've got it set up like that on mine so I can tell my home PC to download stuff from anywhere I happen to be in the world haha.

Not that I use torrents much these days.

Ooh, nice :). Don't tend to use torrents myself much either, but that could be pretty handy for smartphone users.

Yeah. Web interface works pretty well. I have the same setup for Usenet using SABnzbd+

Handy being able to check on your downloads and add more to the queue from anywhere in the world :p

Ok my network setup skills are looking poor at best.....
having no joy with this :(

Would also be handy to be able to access my files on the dell system too.

The dell is running xp pro btw.

You'll probably need to set up your router to forward the webui port to the dell PC if you haven't already.

Follow the instructions here http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netgear/WNR2000/Utorrent.htm

Only use the port that the webUI is using.

It's quite complicated and hard to explain over the internet :p

Isn't it quciker to make a mini network or use a external hdd, download speeds most of the time are never as fast as external hdd's and networks.
