New build......Intel Duo 6850, Asus P5N32-E sli plus, 700 watt psu, 2gig Corsair Dominator matched,Asus GTX8800 graphics, 360gig hd sata, Lite On dvd/cd, .....have not built a system for about 4 years so some of this stuff is new to me. (one ide socket, thin red hd signal sata cable(?) to mb sata 1) Bios shows its correctly identified HD on Sata 1 so I'm assuming its working oK.

Initial build seemed fine and more or less booted first go.

Started to try to load XP Pro after formatting new hd and managed to get as far as the end of the Dos stuff and the first 'Windows set up' screen (set up is starting windows message) and then I get an 'unmountable boot volume ' blue screen and nothing further. A quick search threw up usual answers to this problem, 1) check 80 pin ide cable not 40pin (theres only the DVD /Cd actually on the ide cable so thats not the problem?
2) Run Chkdsk or Fixdisc. tried both to no avail..........

Any ideas please?

If it's a SATA drive you may need to load drivers for your RAID controller so that Windows can access your disk. You can do this by pressing F6 (I think it's F6 anyway) when prompted at the beginning of the DOS stage of Windows XP setup.

Thanks for your attention ..........It is in fact F6 to install 'Raid' or other drivers(or something similar as you say) but the message only mentions A: drive with no option for D:/E: drive (driver disk) and I cant find any mention of Sata drivers on the driver dvd anyway. Hmm........Ive again formatted the Hd but come up with exactly same result..........

I've read about this before....

If you are trying to install an older copy of windows xp, for example Windows XP Home (2002) or any other pre SP2 XP versions, you may have problems with these newer motherboards, you will need to order a copy of windows XP SP2.

Or if you're a little more experienced you could take your current copy of XP, and use nlite to integrate SP2 into the CD, and burn your own copy of an install. :P

Yeah, you'll need to put the drivers on a floppy disk.

Read Cleggy's idea too though; definitely worth considering. nLite is a fine tool.
