Evening all

Trying to play some DVD's etc from my laptop onto my TV.

The laptop outputs HDMI and the TV only has DVI. I have an HDMI cable and then into the TV i have a HDMI-DVI converter.

The laptop picture displays on the TV but it has lined going down the sides of it. See Pic...

Ive played with the settings and cant change it at all. The only thing that changes is which side the lines go up on depending on what res you put it on. The picture also flickers on and off depending on what res.

Ive plugged it into my dell monitor the same way using DVI and its perfect. Running DVI straight from my desktop PC to the TV is also great. It just doesnt seem to work using the HDMI-DVI way.

Any ideas?

i would have thought what ever it is your trying to watch/play can not fit on the tv screen your trying to thats why it has the black gap.

What size is the TV and what size was the monitor you tried?

TV is an old 26" with a max res of 1024 x 768

Monitor is a 24" with max being full HD 1920 x 1080

I notice that on my DVI cable from my pc it has a few pins missing.
The HDMI-DVI adapter i have doesnt. Whats the mising pins for?

Ah well. VGA works great on it. Just need a longer cable, Its short by about 10 inches:sad:

I would assume that the converter for dvi does not contain the analogue signal, as hdmi has no analogue signal, so the tv cannot pick it up correctly.

I use it like this, my TV only has DVI, but by graphics card outputs 2xDVI, so one goes to my monitor via a DVI to VGA adapter (my monitor only has VGA) and the other goes to my TV via an HDMI switch, so it goes from DVI on the graphics card to HDMI to plug in to the switch, then HDMI back to DVI to feed the TV. This allows switching between the Sky HD box and the PC.

However, I have two choices: if I select 'PC' on the TV then it will only accept PC type resolutions, ie 1024x768 or 16:10 etc etc output from the PC, which 'looses' the top and bottom of the picture including the bottom toolbar as TVs are 16:9 and widescreen PC monitors are 16:10. If I select 'HD' as the input then the TV will not accept PC resolutions and if you boot the PC with the switch connecting it to the TV the TV says 'Video mode not supported'; so you have to select a TV type resolution on the graphics setting for that 'monitor' ie the TV.

On my old ATi X1600 with the latest ATi drivers, there was an 'enable HD TV resolutions' tickbox that appeared in one of the menus once I'd connected the TV, and with the GF8600GT the resolution is there on the list.

Try downloading the latest drivers from the chipset manufacturers' website and enabling this then selecting 1366x768 or if it is ATi '720p' and all should be well. You may need to change to HD in from PC if your TV is like mine.

I also need to specify 'set up monitors independantly' otherwise I cannot have my 'square' (1289x1024) monitor and my widescreen TV both set up correctly.

I can now drag and drop windows across including media player and dedicated satellite TV software between the TV and the monitor (and anything else!!). The only issue is with the nVidia card if I make Vista Media Centre full screen on the TV, I can't then drag the mouse back over to the monitor to continue working on it, although I can with Power DVD etc, this may be due to a recent Windows update though, not the card.

Hope this helps.
