Err last time i went we used floats or just floated some bread.
Only tend to go to the local pond nothing to special until i pick up some of the basics :)
I had my best catch of 21lb mirror this year at center parcs amazing place for fishing.
You need to decide first what you want to do as the equipment is different for float or Leger i like Leger as it a lazy way of fishing you don't need to do alot just wait so you would need bit alarms, float on the other hand is more hands you would be catching alot of small fish this way.
But is it a sport...I mean, really??
Anything where you can sit down and eat whilst "competing" isn't a sport.
I used to go fishing loads when I was growing up. You can't really go wrong with it, any shop which sells fishing tackle is going to have a basic rod, reel and float kit you could use. I would have thought the shop owner should also know decent waters for beginners.
Our bait of choice always used to be maggots with ground bait to bring the fish in, but it depends what the fish are used to.
EDIT: I won a couple of junior fishing competitions actually. Got some nice kit as prizes, think my mum gave it away recently though :(
EDIT2: You guys are *put on sunglasses* trolling, yeeeeeeeeaaaahhhh!!!!
LOL you lot is fishing a sport? you no it can take a good hour to land some of the bigger ones.
Any way here is a pic of the set up i use very cheap didnt spend more than £200 and you can get some good stuff at car boots oh and one of the 21lb the other pic is on my phone.
Oh and yes i do need a bigger net

I Keep telling our eldest this, the only sporty thing he does is Fishing.
I used to enjoy a bit of fishing when I was younger, but real fishing....you know in an effing river where you don't KNOW if there are fish or not. I really don't get why people go to reservoirs stocked with fish......isn't that taking half of the fun away?
I went to a trout lake a couple of times. It was pretty cool to catch, kill, take home, prepare, and eat your own trout. Loads of families with kids there made it feel like some sort of amusement park though :-/
My best fish are a 21lb Pike I caught in Ireland, then a 72lb Nile Perch and 13lb Tigerfish in Egypt. Not done any fishing for years though. Sort of miss it occasionally, although I do not miss getting up at 5am on a Sunday :-/
Never caught anything huge before, caught some bigish ones while fishing near ullapool......caught 52 perch one day at the local river, or was it the same one I kept throwing back.....dunno tbh lol.
Hah, I once caught the same pike in one day, with the same lure, in the same place. Guess he just couldn't resist it :p

Hehe nice one, i went fishing whilst in Kenya this year, caught a 50lb+ sail fin (think marlin but much smaller lol).
Going to go again when i go Cuba next year :D.
Haven't been river fishing for many MANY years.

I tend to prefer sea fishing, off a pier with feathers. catch 5-8 mackrel with every cast on a good day.
For lake fishing make sure you get quality line, ask the local shop what they recommend in your area. Also ask them to recommend what bait to use. It varies wherever you are in the country.
I always prefered to use a pole or whip instead of a rod but thats just my preference.
