i have just built my new pc; an asus p5n32-e sli motherboard with 2.4GHz Q6600 processor, 2GB of patriot 4-4-4-12 800MHz memory, 8800GTS 512MB graphics card. when i go into the bios or use CPU-Z, it says the processor speed is 1.8GHz, but it should be 2.4GHz. can anyone think why this is?
thanks

This is speedstep, it throttles the cpu when inactive, saving trees, the planet and you excess heat. It is normal, and is fine with overclocking too. :)

go into bios, its under speed step, should be enabled as normal..

If your overclocking you might as well turn it off.

why? it still toggles the multiplier when the cpu is idle.

well i'm not exactly a guru where overclocking is concerned but its generally considered better to leave it off when overclocking.

I was told, take it off while stability testing, put it back on when its stable.

screw the trees...turn it off and kill the planet  at least your system will fly hehe

yo i would leave it on and overclock abit it doesnt affect it
its like when u use easy aplication its goes to a level
but lets say you game it would go up dont turn it off it saves power to and stops it over heating so much

Some people drop their multiplier so they can overclock their RAM more - in this scenario SpeedStep needs to be disabled - or when it shifts to full multiplier, the machine freezes...

True.

Well the main reason overclockers turn SpeedStep/C&Q off is so that they can be sure the processor is stable at the overclocked speed. It's fine to turn it back on once you've got your overclock working fine, as Lynx stated. In fact you definitely should - to save on your leccy bill.
