View Full Version : The Pacific
Someone got me this on DVD recently and I have started watching it. I loved Band of Brothers and this is made by the same people. It has Tom Hanks commentry at the start but this did not put me off too much.
I have to say it's not really grabbing me like BoB did. But still worth a go if you like war stuff which is fairly gritty.
It all rather remind me a touch of COD W@W!
I was gonna get this for xmas, band of brothers will be an all time classic in my eye's, when you have finished it let us know how it pans out, I found with band of brothers that I had to sit and watch it on my own which helped and made me look forward to the next one.
I watched this when it was first on tv and wasn't impressed with it as much as BoB, it has some ok bits but overall BoB was better in my opinion
BoB is definitely better, but then they are different styles of stories. The Pacific is an excellent show in its own right, but IMO gets knocked too much as people compare it to BoB as its about war and by the same people.
If BoB had never been released, this would have got much more favourable reviews I feel.
I found my biggest problem with it was that with BoB you spent a bit of time at the start getting to know the characters and then it stuck with them throughout, whereas you dont get to know the characters as well up front with Pacific, and it moves about 3 different people who are not as closely related as the BoB boys.
Oh and the fact there are a few too many non war zoney bits (ie the whole episode set in Oz).
BoB 10/10
TP 6/10
Its just not quite there in the same way as BoB.. Its good, but it jumps around between characters too much, and I also found that I was actually disliking some of the characters, rather than in BoB, where you found that you actually wanted them to succeed..
I think i watched about 6 of them, i love band of brothers, it was just awesome, this feels a little too hollywood for me, none of the same involvement that you got with band of brothers.
Im what people might call obsessive when it comes to war films as ive got just over 40 on dvd!
I loved every minute of band of brothers - it had the epic music scores, top notch acting (even if alot of it was from British actors!), great production value and was compiled with alot of attention to detail.
I watched The Pacific in HD when it was on TV and it was a good watch, but it definately seemed to be lacking that certain spark that kept everything in BoB epic - the acting was often off key and alot of the story didnt follow on as fleuntly as it could have - granted alot of that could have been down to the action difference in campaign, its noted that the campaign in peleliu wasnt as exciting to watch as operation market garden, as its 2 different contrasts of the war, one involved an action-heavy european campaign whilst the other was a strategic hunger-ridden battle with the empire of japan.
was it overall watchable? yes, is it fair to compare to band of brothers? probably not, would i prefer the pacific? not a chance, band of brothers is far better in almost every way.

The reason its not (as) good IMO is half of the episodes are about your main man Bobert Leckie getting laid.

Been hearing adverts for this, will probably get it for Christmas.
I can't expect it to be good as BoB, nothing will be. :)

I have been told its not as good as BoB (OMG that was absolutely awesome - each episode was great to watch) but that is quite a mountain to beat! Have added it too Lovefilm as I need to watch it if it is anywhere near as good.
Just watched episodes 3 and 4. May as well not have. Nothing hapened. What a cop out. Not at all impressed thus far.
I watched the first six when it was on and wasn't impressed, just watched 7, 8 & 9 and they are much much better.
Did anyone watch Generation kill?
Follows the US Reconnaissance Marines into Iraq, great show.
Did anyone watch Generation kill?
Yes! great series.
If anyone doubts - it was produced by the people that created 'The Wire' in collaboration with Evan Wright (Evan Wright was the reporter who wrote the book about his time embedded with the US Marines during the 2003 invasion of Iraq)
Not a fan of generation kill, its just a bunch of redneck racists calling eachother names.
"Over There" is a good show, but a little soap opera ish at times

I seen one or two episodes of 'over there', looked alright tbh.
i enjoyed this on the whole but like you said a few eps were just filler, but they are aimed more at the yanks as its telling them what was going on. bob will always mean more to us as it was over here while this is about another side of the war that we only played a small part in.
i found 4 or 5 eps were like i imagined cod w@w the movie would be like, storming the airfield for eg was just a cc.
with bob being a full series you got more time to get to know and like them, this is only a mini series so you dont really, this imo is its bigest down fall.
gen kill was cool.
Just in case anyone is interested, this is a thread where I took some photos of the airfield in BoB.. Not the one they used, but it was the one they left England from..

Brilliant work there Aaron, the last Airbase I was on was "RAF" Lakenheath. Did get to sit in an F 111
Not a fan of generation kill, its just a bunch of redneck racists calling eachother namesI think that's a very harsh assessment, and ignores a great many of the finer subtleties. Sure there are some very simple minded characters, but their behaviour impacts on everyone around them. There is much more to it than the swearing and ignorance.
