View Full Version : Do I have a faulty motherboard?
I connect my PSU, my CPU, my RAM and graphics card to it, and connect my monitor to the graphics card. It is an Asus P5K by the way. When I power the motherboard the green light on the motherboard comes on, the fan on the CPU heatsink runs, and a never-ending beep starts. The last time I turned it on, the beep only lasted a few seconds then died, and the fan stopped. Nothing appears on the monitor, the monitor stays in the standby position.

Take the RAM out and see what happens
Take the RAM out and see what happens
then he will get beeps saying theres no ram
ok what do you have like memory? 1 stick or 2 sticks? what PSU? etc..?
if you have 2 sticks of memory then start the elimination process by taking 1 stick out, if it still happens take the other out and put the first one back in, if it still happens make sure you have connected up all the right cables from the PSU to the motherboard, also have you installed the CPU correctly and fan spinning round?
Im not a novice to PC's and when i built my brothers even i had it wrong. Forgot the 8800 needs 2 PCI-E connectors off the PSU:mrgreen:

Yes I connected the PSU connector to the slot on the 8800GT, and now stuff has come up on the screen. However I have to sort out the case fans, when I tried them the first time they ran for a few seconds then stoped.

What PSU have you got? detach everything that isn't needed and see if you can boot
No it booted, he was right, the connector wasn't in the graphics card.
I have a question, which USB slot do I put the USB connector from the case into, there is USB910, USB78 and USB1112.
you should be able to go for any of them - The are listed in number, ie: USB 7&8, USB 9&10 and USB 11&12. Personally I would go for 7&8, just to keep it in order, but it shouldnt really matter. :)
OK I am now connecting the hard drive and DVD/CD drive. The motherboard came with SATA connectors and I'm connecting from the SATA port on the hard drive to the SATA port on the motherboard. However, there are two different cables, one has both connectors flat, and one has one flat and one which bends at a right-angle. I think I have to use the right-angle one, but which side should I put into the motherboard and which onto the hard drive, the right-angle side or the flat side?
This is the one with the right-angle connector:

For the optical drive I have the same questions.
How do I hook up the case fans? Each fan has wires with two white things like this on the end of them:

But the PSU only has these things:

Which I can only connect the right white thing on the first picture to.
Does the other white thing require something to connect to?

They should go onto the molex coming from the PSU, yes
Yes but what about the other white thing? I just leave that alone?
Also, what about the question about the SATA connectors?
on a fan, the 2nd "white thing" is normally a passthrough - ie, you can connect another device to the end of that so the fan doesnt take up a whole molex connector all to itself.
With the SATA cables, it doesnt matter which end you use for which.. I normally use the right angled end on the drive, and the straight end on the mobo, but thats just how I do it! :)

What about the DVD drive?

Same...
I have it in the case now and the fans appear to run correctly. However there is a slight crackling sound which appears to be coming from the motherboard. It actually sounds like something frying. I haven't had it on again.

i used the right angle connectors on my mobo, because the SATA ports were under my graphics card 8) its all just for you to make it fit if there are unforseen space issues
You do have the m/board mounted on some stand offs in the case? The cracking could be a short out !!
